On one hand, I agree with you Ethan that you've taken a lot of shit from the fanbase that has been over the top and definitely undeserved. However, I do feel it should be stressed that the interrupting was getting to a point that it made it difficult to follow the conversation. I think this was particularly bad in the Sean Evans episode, not so much the Papa one (I thought that episode was fine, Papa was a little nervous at the start and you may have asked some personal questions a little too early in the interview. I think it would have been better to start with the pizza review segment and then ease into the more important topics because it would have given Papa a chance to get to know you and relax and open up more/turn off the PR persona). But with Sean it felt like you weren't giving him a chance to speak. You'd ask him a question and the moment he was about to answer you'd cut him off and bounce to a different question. As a listener, it came off as though you weren't listening to anything he had to say or didn't actually care about him as a guest. This is extremely frustrating because Sean is the draw for that episode, hearing him talk and banter with you is the reason people clicked on the video but your method of interviewing robbed the audience of that experience. Instead it created an environment where Sean was constantly on the defensive and never given an opportunity to give a thorough response- leaving every question you asked unresolved. TLDR it was two and half hours of getting blueballed constantly. I understand that when dealing with such a large audience it's common for bullshit to catch on, everyone wants to jump on the "lets hate Ethan" bandwagon and no one knows how to convey their feelings in a constructive manner making it difficult to parse between legitimate criticism and blind hate. Which is why, as someone who never comments, I feel the need to leave this comment in hopes that you can understand why the previous episodes were so poorly received and maybe help you fine tune your interviewing strategy. Because if your goal is to cut to the meat of the issue and get some real answers out of your guests, you won't be able to achieve that if you don't let them speak.

The interviews are a bit hit or miss for me, I personally prefer when you guys just discuss random stories that you're interested in (mobility scooters, TV shows, KZbin drama, etc.). My interest in the interviews often depends on who the guest is, how much I know about them, and how comfortable they are with the nature of the show. Ethan does a great job at asking tough and interesting questions, but when the conversation strays from the guest and becomes focused on Ethan or his interests, or when Ethan lets his enthusiasm for food distract from the guest, it can be difficult to watch.

Knowing when to be assertive is as difficult as knowing when to shut up. You need to find a balance. The last three interviews, you've had some good moment where you've really hit on something interesting and important, and you've had other moments when you've cut a flowing conversation short for no reason, before rambling and hitting dead air. People listen to podcasts because they're more conversational. Go hard when your instincts tell you. But don't shut down a flowing conversation after asking a question, just because you're bored. Some of your fans are likely interested in the answers, and your technique can be jarring. Less Howard Stern/Cathy Newman and more Ethan. Hope that was constructive, in case you ever read this.

@@shambles07 He can't and won't admit that he could interview better? He specifically says he's trying to develop his own unique style of interviewing and that it's still a work in progress. He explained his thinking and gave a pretty good explanation for why he's leaning towards a more aggressive style. Listen again @1:00 until 6:00 or so. Maybe you missed it? It's annoying when Ethan interrupts a story or segment, absolutely. I still appreciate it when he cuts in if a guest is going to explain something or tell a story for several minutes that isn't new for most of the audience or is sounding like marketing wank. Both statements can be true. After rewatching some of the older Ethan & Hila videos, I think I'm witnessing the beginning of some bad interviewing habits. The reaction videos are an especially good example of the frequent pausing to add commentary. It's part of the formula in those videos but in interviews and podcasts, it can be too much. EDIT: Timestamps

I think the reason people say it’s rude for you to interrupt is because it seems to us or at least most of us that you aren’t very interested in what the guest has to say, but when you allow them to talk and let them drift to the next topic by themselves it’s like you are both in a actual conversation like a conversation you’d have with a old friend.

The papa interview wasnt bad at all with the interruptions. In fact, I loved it. But for me, the sean Evans one was almost unwatchable because the interruptions and the quick topic changing made it really hard to follow. I felt it was unnecessarily adversarial. Sean isnt a controversial figure, but you were asking him questions as if you were cross examining projared. I just think you need to work more on framing the interview and funneling questions in a more logical manner. Although I'm also a huge fan of your off the wall ridiculous questions as well. I think you'll eventually find your groove and happy medium when it comes to interviews. Papa bless 🙏

Ethan, you cannot ask the guest a question and literally not give them enough time to generate a good answer that involves context. It's not like the guest randomly brought up a useless topic, no, you asked them the question so let them goddamn answer. Some of the best moments come from podcasts when the guest takes some time to fully realize the question and provide good insight. Consistently, as a weekly viewer, I am like "damn Ethan, good question" but then you interrupt the guest as they are answering and then that question never gets answered. Don't blame a 'new style of interviewing', just learn to let your guests talk. You can cut them off if they are going on for too long, but dude if you are asking the question, let them answer.

Ashley Arnold Thank you, this exactly. That’s the issue I’ve been having, especially with how he explained himself at the beginning of this episode. Ethan assumes we know exactly what’s going on, but if viewers are unfamiliar with the guest, then it’s necessary for the guest to do their “boring” (Ethan’s words) conversation points first, or its just necessary in general to get a foundation for a deeper conversation and have things to bounce off of. I’m really having trouble with this “aggressive interviewer” style that Ethan is trying to mimic, especially with the Papa episode and the Sean Evans episode especially.
