I work in the space launch industry. The tape on Starliner (and many other spacecraft) is fiberglass tape used to bundle and route wiring. Apparently Boeing used the wrong kind of tape in an area that was going to experience heat greater than that tape is rated for. Orbital velocity is Mach 25, so Mach 11 is lowballing escape velocity by quite a bit.

To be that douche, "orbital" velocity is dependent on what your orbital is ie low earth? Geostationary? Just inside the earth's range to be considered holding a satellite in a stable orbit? Pretty funny when there are 737's taking off something like every 3 seconds and landing safely every single day!! Go ahead and figure out what percentage of flights experience major issues? I'll wait..(yes, I agree the number should be 0, but what you'll find is something less than 1%)
@Chaotic_Pixie2 ай бұрын
DUUUDE. Boeing doesn’t milk the tax payers for anything. All the defense contractors have to compete for contracts… and those contracts keep untold numbers of individuals employed. It’s not just the bigwigs, but the designers & engineers, the Union assembly crews, all the smaller businesses that contract with a defense contractor for the things on the airplane/helicopter/ship/submarine/etc… from the firearms to the computer tech stuff to the precision made parts to the paint… and then there are all the people who are employed producing the parts & raw materials that make up the items made by the sub-contractors that go on the vehicle made by the defense contractor. Going after Boeing or any other major corporation that, and I emphasize this part greatly, is ultimately responsible for the employment of untold numbers of people is like cutting down the forest to prevent a forest fire when clearing out the underbrush & pruning weak saplings would have sufficed. And that doesn’t even account for Boeing Commercial and Boeing Space and how they figure into the economic web of well-being for everyone tied into the Boeing tree. You’d honestly need a degree in economics to start to comprehend the intricacies and the fallout when a key piece is removed from the web.

I am pretty sure that with all the vets to get out over the past twenty years, all private corporate security everywhere is loaded up with guys who aren't really looking at _you_ while thinking of ways _a person_ might die. Like the time David Drake was working as a bus driver after he came back from Vietnam, and a regular passenger asked him what he was reading during a layover before the next run. He flips the cover up where she can read it: _How to Kill._ (If you are unfamiliar, that was a pamphlet series -- I think it was eight volumes -- published by Paladin Press.)
