He estado tratando de aprender español desde que tenía tres años. Es porque yo nací cerca la frontera de U.S. con Mexico. Piensé que la metoda de escuchar español en "chunks" seria exactamente que necesito porque vivo en Alaska y no puedo escuchar español ni practicar. Unicamente, cuando yo estar en Mexico, por visitas, puedo escuchar español. Desafortunadamente, cuando estoy alli, nadie puede tomarse el tiempo de enseñarme metodicamente, y mi español no mejora mucho. No se me agrega nada. Crecí en Nuevo México, donde una vez, cuando era joven, escuchaba español todos los días, y aprendí lo que sé por jugando con mis amigos y hablando con los viejitos que no hablaban inglés. Sé muchas palabras y puedo entender casi todo lo que escucho, si conozco el contexto. Pero cada vez que la conversación va a temas difíciles o cuando mis amigos hablan de manera casual, empiezo a perder la comprensión. Entonces, yo he pensando que necesito escuchar y aprender frases, y practicar frases que se repiten a menudo. Hacemos esto en nuestra lengua materna sin pensarlo dos veces: usamos frases.

Hi Mariana, great video! I have a question - how do we use these words to express a length of time that's passed without something happening, rather than since something started. For example, "it's been a while since we last saw each other", "it's been a while since I've played tennis", etc. I think it would go something like "hace mucho tiempo sin vernos" o "hace mucho tiempo sin jugar tenis" but I'm wondering if there is a better way to express this, specifically the length of time that has passed since the last time that something happened (something that used to happen often)

En lo personal, la única forma en que he podido explicarlo es con un diagrama, como si fueran matemáticas XD. Trazo una línea para representar el tiempo, marco un punto de inicio y sombreo desde ahí, luego coloco el letrero que indique cierta actividad, como trabajo, práctica de un deporte, etc. En el punto de inicio pongo una fecha y digo: "hago tal actividad DESDE tal fecha", y saco la cuenta del tiempo que ha pasado ... luego digo "hago tal actividad DESDE HACE tanto tiempo ... Bien dicen que "dos cabezas son mejores que una ... ahora ya vi otras formas de explicarlo sin uso de diagramas ni nada ... menos mal no soy maestro de español jejeje Esto lo aprendí intentando explicar español a conocidos que hice jeje Con los italianos y brasileños es más sencillo pues hay traducción literal de esas expresiones jeje Saludos Mariana, gracias por permitirnos conocer un poco más del mismo español: uno lo habla sólo porque los padres nos enseñaron ... ah ¡¡¡Feliz Navidad!!! ¡¡¡Para todos los que trabajan en este canal!!! ¡¡¡Son muy buenos!!!

My native Spanish speaking teacher has taught my class that "hace," when used to indicate some amount of time, essentially means "it makes," as in the verb, "hacer." For, example, "Hace cinco años que estudio español." So literally, in English, "It makes five years that I study Spanish." Or "I have been studying Spanish for five years."

Hi, I think using the perfecto de indicativo tense “he estado" and the gerundio "aprendiendo” does not work because the perfecto de indicativo is a completed action and the gerundio is a on-going action ie I am singing (right this minute) the gerundio equals the English verb ending 'ING'

I bet English speakers find ''Hace 2 meses empecé a aprender español'' to be easier and use this form because it's the easiest to translate back and forth to English and Spanish. Meanwhile, ''Hace 2 meses que aprendo español'' would appear that from the perspective of the Spanish speaker, you need to use the simple present or ''aprendo'' but from the perspective of an English speaker, you need the past tense, ''I learned''
