You gotta give Satch respect for besides his virtuosity, stepping in to play these tunes and being humble enough to do it. Maybe Alex will change his mind about playing again but his bond with Ed is still so strong. I don’t think I could do what Satch is doing because there will always be the naysayers so once again much respect for him. Joe and Ed were definitely my top Influences back in the day but as a guitarist trying to learn Ed’s stuff when I was a teenager I couldn’t do it because I didn’t realize he was a half step down or even somewhere in between. He definitely got the skills to make a copy but he's old and he got his own stuff. And those guys like Kent Carlevi who make a perfect cover of Amsterdam for example put their whole life into doing one song perfectly at the time of recording and that is not realistic to expect from someone like Joe. Paul Gilbert is probably more fit for that type of stuff. Fffing Nutcase was maybe a bit hard, I change it to Fffing Naive instead 😉

Joe is light years beyond anyone Sam has played these songs with besides Eddie. I like and respect him. He's good people. God bless. 🙏 But, it's hard to listen to a song like this without that pocket groove that Ed and Al had. You don't realize how integral it is on even a relatively easy song like Poundcake until it's not there. Then it just jumps right out at you. That DNA, man. It's IN the songs. It's inextricable.
@jmhutner
@jmhutner 3 ай бұрын
Relatively easy? A renowned virtuoso like Satriani can’t even play it right. Lol
@e.l.norton
@e.l.norton 3 ай бұрын
@@jmhutner THAT'S the point. There's easy, and there's Van Halen easy. NOBODY plays Van Halen properly. Wolf did it. He's got the genes and years of grooving with Ed and Al. It's in him. But, nobody else does it right. They get close sometimes. But, you can always hear the "not right" in it. Joe has spent his career being Joe and developing HIS thing. It's virtually impossible for a player like that to cop the feel, swing, and groove of a player like Ed. Ditto for Jason on drums. Both instruments need eachother to do it right. The only two who can nail that groove that makes those songs live and breathe are Ed and Al. That's not an insult to Joe and Jason. It's just testament to how supremely unique Ed and Al were musically. You can't beat brothers.

For anybody thinking that this is maybe a little sacrilegious because Eddie is gone, I would argue that Satch is one of only a select few guitarists on the planet who can actually do this timeless VH classic justice using his own signature tone and style. The only thing missing is the “drill-pick” effect that Ed used in the intro..😂😂😂

Drill pick(s) is Paul Gilbert, using the drill near the pickup is Eddie. 👍🏻

Paul Gilbert invented the drill pick gimmick. Eddie borrowed it.

@@9unslin9erincorrect. Eddie told the story. There was a Makita drill sitting in the studio bc there was work being done. He picked it up and started messing with it and discovered the crazy sound you can get. Gilbert mostly used it for picking anyway, which Eddie never did.

I remember when I first heard Surfing with an alien by Satch. I immediately went out and bought the album. Brilliant guitar player. Lots of well known guitar players took lessons from him. Yea, he’s that good.

I like that Joe is being Joe…..I wanted this. Not Joe trying to be Eddie, and you can hear he’s not…cause it can’t be done. This is a tribute, and Joe is doing just that being Satch. The only thing…..is….that this is basically Chickenfoot no? One member not there, but Chad could’ve done it too….imho. Not taking anything away from JB, or the others. Man…Satch is Satch. Perfect! Anything less would be unacceptable!

Of course no person on this earth will or can duplicate King Edward…. That being said I think he’s up there smiling down knowing these guys are saying I will love you forever and thank you. What a great tribute to a man that brought all of us awesome music and unmatched talent we will never see again, we were lucky. I totally want to see these guys having fun for Eddie in an arena close by👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️
