Love your work Henry. I do think however that your intro says it all behind why people aren't excited about the W1. If you have to explain the car in minute detail, and describe why its so special, it misses a bit of the point. And I don't know how to describe it, but somehow Gordon Murray goes into excruciating detail with every part, but somehow the product feels more organic and has a soul. Modern Mclarens all seem so antiseptic and clinical.

The other issue is that manufacturers seem to come out with something „special“ every other year nowadays - especially McLaren, Aston and Ferrari Since the P1 we had what? Senna, Speedtail, Sabre, Elva and Solus? Can‘t blaim them for taking advantage of the market for 1m+ Cars - but of course the „one-in-ten years“ car won‘t feel special any more Same with that horrible F80

Well let's be honest here! The government in the UK, EU are all pushing the green deal, forcing manufacturers like Ferrari to produce more electric rather than what the market wants and if people don't buy, Ferrari gets punished. Also cars are mandated to be less noisy. trials have been done to implement sound checks alongside speed check, and therefore they want to fine you for having a loud v12! So you can't blame the people leaving the EU and leaving the UK and live more freely and less tax intensive in Dubai.

Do you mean in a flooded carpark in Dubai? Its a shame... Where engineering now is incredibly impressive, and this needs to happen before we feel flow on effects to consumers. Look to past technologies that trickles down through peak racing into high end road to now normal... Abs for example....but, this is the price of progress, and I'm excited to see manufacturers still keen to 'normalise' such technical talk into what we will eventually take for granted
@stephenwouw862411 күн бұрын
@@smirkingrevenge6here’s the thing, you’ve mentioned the trickle down technology but that only happens when the sport is pushing technology. If I look at f1 the v6 hybrid technology is already 12 years old! And in 2026 they are moving towards 4 cylinders engines with hybrid tech. So there is your tech coming your way! And next in line is aerodynamic efficiency. The hyper focus on aerodynamics because thats where the freedom lies. But in that aspect we see a ceiling rather. They are exploring ground effect, but why truly needs ground effect on a Kia? That’s just the trickle down from f1 straight onto road cars. And what you see is the high end cars having design elements that mimics ground effect design. It’s ridiculous. It’s a joke that the styling of a bmw m3 is aggressive and have ground effect elements. It’s in my terms pure vulgar! So v6 hybrid, 4 cylinder hybrid, aerodynamic hyper focus, it’s not what the customer wants! In the higher end, luxury, sports and hyper car segment the trend is clear. The customer wants bigger and louder engines! Something that looks insane because it’s designed that way not because of aero efficiency. Now aero efficiency makes much for sense on cars that potentially can go fast. So on that end of the spectrum we have Aston Martin Valkyrie. Designed by the master himself Adrian Newey. Every aspect of that car has a purpose with a hyperfocus on aero efficiency. All the figures makes sense and are justified. But to say it looks beautiful? I beg to differ. It’s an automotive marvel, very impressive. Big engine is a massive selling point. But there is only so much you can trickle down from that! Next there is the obvious problem of the government! They are demanding all sorts of things especially to make things more safe and more clean and efficient. And they declared war on sports cars. Speeding will be a regular occurrence if regulations will drop down maximum speeds to a human running pace. Add to that limiting on loud exhausts. So the masses will have to deal with all the regulations. And they are offered the boring cars, the utility object, it drives you from a to b. That’s it! It’s no different than your dishwasher. And clearly people want something different. But governments forbids it. The only ones who have the ability to get what they want is the people with means to buy cars that doesn’t necessarily abide to the rules. And these are the hyper cars. But since governments are clamping down on the manufacturers, the customers appetite isn’t addressed. So they resort to more extreme cars, Bugatti, Pagani, and the hyper cars. You can hardly drive these things in Europe or UK. Without having several fines for every time you drive it. So they track their cars or put them away just to look at. My opinion if it’s just going to be eye candy make it actual beautiful! Making things aero efficient isn’t necessary beautiful! I believe mankind has past a mark to what is in my opinion the golden age of automobiles. Cars are becoming more utilitarian only. Beauty isn’t a metric that is necessary. Regulations is taking away the soul, the experience. And cars being a display of wealth is becoming vilified in left leaning societies. Stick your head above the grass we cut your head off. Only few places in the world where you can drive these cars to your heart’s content. And that’s the future for you.

Screaming V12 heart and soul, for power and sound. 242 mph by unassisted engine power and aerodynamic engineering. Iconic centered-driver, three seat interior design. The car won Le Mans with no more than a wing a racing tires added. There hasn’t been a successor to the F1. Not yet.

Even the P1 didn't have to live with a supercar market this crowded - it had TWO peers instead of a dozen. Ten years later and we have the Hennessy Venom F5, Bugatti Tourbillon, Rimac Nevera (and a slew of other EV exotics like it), Koenigsegg Jesko, Aston Martin Valkyrie, Pagani Utopia, Mercedes-AMG One, Ferrari F80, and _this,_ and that's leaving out the track specials like the Red Bull RB17. *All within three years.* TL;DR: We no longer live in an era where a heavy-hitting halo car could win you sole ownership of the spotlight, and that has consequences for how these cars are seen. Ultimately where this is going to succeed is where the Valkyrie failed. It's a road car, for the road. Seems like a strange statement to make, but the discussions Henry had reminded me of what Gordon Murray said about the original McLaren F1, taking into account the centre of pressure. And how he had to fight his instincts to deliver a road car. This will work on the road, you won't need an F1 team to lift you in and out of it like you'd imagine they need with the Valkyrie, which is also handy for when it breaks down on you, they're there to fix it or put it on a flatbed. The aesthetics become even more stunning once you realize HOW performance- and technology-driven every bit of the design actually is. Because it is not only highly technologically advanced and of mind-bending performance, but it is ALSO elegant and beautifully styled. Whereas for instance the Senna absolutely wasn't. I've learned to "accept" its looks by now, but it's not exactly ever going to be a beauty. This one, however... WOW. Well done McLaren, indeed. Fun fact about that air diverter on the roof: the F-16 has that, too! Well, it's kind of upside down, but it totally makes sense: this wants to stay down - F-16 wants to stay up. 😂

It sure is interesting seeing the different approaches between Ferrari, McLaren, Aston and Mercedes. Aston has gone full Group C style, Ferrari has gone back to the philosophy of its top tier being race car linked, just like F40 and F50 were, Mercedes just made something too fiddly and still in a vaguely conventional form factor. Mclaren feels like a series production McLaren but with a bit more porosity. And then theres GMA just doing something totally unique...

It's been a little while since the W1 was released and I think it is growing on me. While I'm no longer a 12-year-old boy, its looks would get it done for me as much as any other McLaren. However, for the money I would save up a little more and get the Bugatti Tourbillion since I'm not a hard-core racer. It would be interesting to see how this batch of super-hyper cars fair against the McMurtry on a track day.

mp412c was the one car that they ever got right design wise. It looked on the level of the 455 or 458 or 488. Then they took risks with curves and loops and ellipsis and they never recovered people are buying them because they are fast, but the quality of design and build is no longer on the level of mp412c.
@Sakratic12 күн бұрын
I would bet they will be at the front of the field, come the new 2026 regs with the usage of active aero front and back and the knowledge in general of shifting of aero balance with active wings introduced for the new regs. The ability to shed downforce level at will should go far in performance of any ground effect type vehicle and just having a stable aero platform into, during, and out of a corner while dealing with cross winds making flow condition and vortices creation to help with the sealing of the floor super important as well. The rest of Formula 1 teams should be put on notice as McLaren won't give up its aero lead any time soon.

The design is growing on me but, I wish the front had a touch more aggression to match the rear. Front profile shape reminds me of a manta ray in the ocean. Would be cool if it had the P1 headlights or a evolved version of a P1 front and rear.

This feels like a very McLaren hypercar. An incredibly detailed, over-engineered, visually subtle but mechanically insane monster whose poster will grace the walls... of a bunch of engineering and mechanical science graduates, the poster itself being of everything underneath the body rather than the car itself. The same person that is excited to buy the W1 is the same mentally as the guys excited back in the day to buy a Volvo because of it's safety technology, just with a lot more money. I think McLaren will eventually get it right. When it comes to desirable cars we live in a post-performance era, where the experience and avatar that car imposes on the driver and the observer is the most important factor rather than outright performance. They'll just do it in the nerdiest way possible, and they wouldn't be McLaren if they didn't.

This is how McLaren F1 got ahead of Red Bull Racing with the unlimited hours of wind tunnel testing that doesn't count against the aero testing time!!!! Ground effects superiority? Vortices and managing of air flow and the energizing of the rear diffuser via the rear wing....just take a look at this vehicle's rear wing and the concepts their current F1 car utilizes and deploys in not only performance but the sheer amount of rear wings they have introduced this season, which btw is done all under the cost cap - also telling and hilarious when dude said we took what we learned from F1 to which I say, it's actually the other way around but they won't obviously be stupid enough to admit that!!!
