I think this is a very good easy to use sharpener..........When you switch sides of the blade while sharpening there is no way to keep the same angle side to side. Different hands different body dynamics. It really doesn't matter as long as it's sharp. That's the one advantage the Ken Onion additions has, a fixed angle guide. I like mine.

A convex edge isn't necessarily a bad thing. For one, its stronger and less likely to chip from heavy use.

How does a knife sharpening video have 12 thumbs down????? Men, come on. There's a reason your mothers didn't give you the love that you needed as a child....she knew you'd grow up to be an Interwebs jerk who hits "thumbs down" on a perfectly nice knife sharpening video. You're mother was right not to love you.

I think the angle settings do not account for the convexing of the edge so you must subtract at least 5 degrees to get the actual angle. Your knife that you sharpened at 21 is somewhere around 26

Definitely at the top of my "must purchase this year". I've gotten pretty good at hand sharpening but there's a world of difference between sharp and super-super sharp.Thank you, brother, for a very thorough explanation from start to finish. This video will be bookmarked and viewed again often. And for those who might have otherwise missed my comment below ... Starkie Blue (aka "Smurf Poo") honing/stropping paste can be purchased here: www.starkiesharp.com/starkiesharp_sharpening_accessories__honing_kits.html. Delivery may take 10 days or so but it's worth the wait.

Thank you for making such a comprehensive video tutorial on the correct use of this apparatus, I appreciate it, and it's the best I've seen yet. One thing I would have preferred, is if you would have called out the particular grits of the belts as you were working through them, just for reference, and also, for the less experienced sharpeners, the amount of, or lack of pressure you put blades as you worked through the belts. My last sharpener was the Tormek Supergrind 2000 green model with the 250 diameter wheel, which I loved dearly, but lost it in an unfortunate circumstance. The next sharpener I will purchase will be the Ken Onion edition with the blade grinder attachment. It appears to offer a great deal of both freedom, & flexibility in the type of blades that can be effectively sharpened. My plan is to sharpen some tactical combat knives, while learning how to use it properly, and then send it to my Son, who has many, many super dull knives that need to be re-profiled & sharpened. My Son has little to no experience sharpening, and I will be sending him your video to learn how to properly use this apparatus, since I cannot be there to help him in person. I really want the Tormek T8, however, after seeing this sharpening system in action, I am beginning to suspect that the Tormek may not be a purchase I can justify, given what this apparatus is fully capable of. Also, I really love a mirror finish on my bevels, so I will be purchasing the leather stropping belt as well, to finish the job off at the end, unless it proves to be unnecessary.

Very informative Video! So it looked to me like you did 5 strokes a side on the red belt to bring the initial burr up and then 2-3 alternating strokes. Then alternating strokes on each side for each finer belt until your power strop. Finishing with 2-3 strokes a side on your old belt with the compound or power strop.... Another thing I noticed is that while you were extremely consistent with your angle, you did, on strokes going to the left and likely because of the underhand grip you took raise the back of the blade off the plane ... It looks like a Range of motion issue for your body by how consistent it was ... But just something to think about.

I have been using a Tormek which speaks for itself and a MasterGrade sharpener which also does a good job. Trouble is the set up on the Tormek and its weight. The weight makes it terribly difficult to move around and the water is a mess. The MasterGrade does well but not as good and the sharpening wheels on it do not last long and are expensive. I have been contemplating the WS KO but read about it scratching the blade. What about that? For what it is worth, Americas Test Kitchen likes a product from Chefs Choice but they are sharpening kitchen knives. I used a Lansky for years and while very effective, it is slow and damn dangerous.

Dude, I watched all your videos (you Seam to be the only one doing any video related to the bga) and I think you're missing something or at list not showing it on the cam if you're doing it. The belts, no matter what grit size you will use, will leave a wire edge on your knives. Lightly Pull your knives trough a piece of soft wood after each grit and finally use a leather strop or the stropping kit (work sharp belt stropping kit for the bga). I just Switched from we and kme manual sharpening to this system and I get hair popping results and my knives cut like butter in just 5 min (as opossed to lots of time with manual). The finger test is crap, I'm afraid to do that with my knives. Shave with them or cut phonebook paper, that's the final test. Good videos trough.. keep it up.

Don't do it! Don't buy this knife destroyer hack machine! You'll never get a 'real' sharp edge with it, and secondly, you will destroy your nice expensive pocket knife! This thing is good for sharpening a wood chopping ax and that's about it. Look at the Wicked Edge sharpening system if you want a frikin scarey sharp knife and not have to worry about wrecking your blade because you are human and you just will.

First of all, the angle between the top pulley and the next lower one is not the same angle as where you would rest the knife on and normally sharpen on the flat rest. Take a look from the side So I have know idea why you put it on the flat rest and then move it up by the top pulley ? Come on !
