You shouldn't be moving to the next belt with a burr on one side. Whatever belt you start with make passes on the right side until you feel a consistent burr all the way down the blade. Then go to the left side of sharpener and check the burr after each pass. Keep going until the burr is gone. Then move to the next belt and repeat tge steps. This way you get a sharper blade and only take off the minimum amount of material necessary. Finish it up with a leather strop for a shaving sharp edge.

It looks like your not following the guides angle towards the tip of your knife? Why is that?
@bluegrassdan4 жыл бұрын
When the conventional wisdom of the day critically says “you can’t do that” a few will say, “I’m gonna try it anyway.” He accomplished a mirror polish with the edge he wanted, in a minimal amount of time. The idea here is, there is more than one way to get there and both can be correct. The take away is, experimenting is an effective way to discover and gain experience.

You seem to be handling the blade in different ways depending on which side you are one. On (your) left you are doing it right, straight through, no angling. On the right, you are angling the blade tip into the belt away from the guide. Is this just the camera angle?
@lrodd2477 жыл бұрын
Eric Gormly Ya man, I noticed that too... The left looked straight and the right side he would angle the tip towards the belt. You can notice when he starts cutting the paper that it would grab towards the top of the blade and not slice through completely.

That’s the problem I’m having with this sharpener. It’s just like the spyderco sharp maker, you end up messing up the angle cause the guide only helps 80% of the way so you are free handing it

Yeah. I just bought one of these this week. It is much harder to use this thing than it looks. I destroyed the first knife I tried to sharpen on it. Totally destroyed, throw it in the trash destroyed. Bevel was all different angles and widths totally blunted, scratched and scraped. I'm 0-3 on sharpening. I'm about to give up and return it. :( I suck at this sharpening shit.

How many knives (average) can you sharpen with a belt (set of belts - considering you use them all equally on one knife)? Thanks.

Seems to me that you are leaning the blade towards the belt about 2/3 into the sharpening rather than following through on the guide.

Good video, I have the Ken Onion work sharp. I use it for large very dull blades. I fine tune them with 3 x 8 bench stones or my KME for smaller knives. It takes time to get the hang of it. My approach was dollar store knives and thrift store knives to practice on. Thank you for the video. : )

That was the worst sound ever! Does anyone know if you are not supposed to use the edge guide except for "long blades?"
@FaithfulPastor5 жыл бұрын
About the 9 minute mark, you are using the coarse belt. When you are grinding on the right side, you are not keeping the knife in contact with the angle guide all the way thru the pass. About half way, your knife loses contact with the guide. But, when grinding on the left side, your knife stays in contact with the guide then entire pass. Is that intentional and if so, why? Thanks! I'm a newby to the Work Sharp system.

Like others have said; when you pass the blade thru the right side guide the tip is nowhere near the guide. You are getting WAY off alignment, which has to cause issues with the edge profile.

Hold your cards I think we've got a BINGO. He should have been lifting on the hilt to maintain contact for the tip and not turning the blade. I wasn't going to finish the video, but I am too curious and want to see the end result.
@GBall_Vision3 жыл бұрын
The directions specifically say, the blade needs to stay parallel with the sharpener. When he gets to the end he’s suppose to actually lift up so the blade rolls up, if it was a spear point he would’ve been doing it semi right, but with that type of point you are suppose to roll it. He most likely didn’t read any or much of the information. The first knife I did was a buck 110, it was completely full tip was gone, I ran it through 2 complete phases and it came out awesome. I see a lot of people having trouble. They need to read the info and take their time. This is by far the best way to get your knife sharp. I’ve messed with stones and everything else, those only get you so far, unless your damn near an expert and have lots of time. The Ken Onion is the way

Aus 8 and 10 are way easier to sharpen then thenS35 that Cold Steel uses. My AD10 and AD15 are extremely tough to get the edge back. The Ken Onion will being them back to super razor sharp but you are going to work at it

Just wanted to say thank you for the video. I just bought one last weekend and sharpened one knife with it so far. I was able to get it sharp but not razor sharp like I wanted. Come to realize it never came with the X4 belt like it should have. I'm now waiting for it show up next week and will give it another go. Just curious if using the Fitz or other compound is needed with the stroping belt out of the box or if it is fine by itself? Thanks again and I can't wait to get better with this sharpner.
@lrodd2477 жыл бұрын
05subisti Ya, that's what I was wondering. Otherwise are we supposed to wear down the new stropping belt first then add the fritz to it?
@casey84967 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the education on the WS/KO edition. I've used Fitz when finishing up my blades, been using Fitz on my vehicles /big rig for 20+yrs before retiring. I just bought the KO edition & can't wait to try the Fitz on the leather honing belt, because they do require some type of polishing brick that should have came with the kit like mine did. I'll try both to see which works better. My kit is #X000WCEWPL 3/4"x 12" Leather & Honing kit. Anyone that has a run down where the best prices for replacement belts, give a shout. Amazon does okay, but....

You add flitz AFTER you have a worn out belt. When you buy this new, you can't use flitz, but he's trying to give people pointer on keeping a worn out stropping belt and use flitz.

Thank you, I got this sharpener today snd I’m practicing on an old carving knife with nicks in the blade. So far I haven’t made the knife very sharp and I’m probably using the wrong angle (20°)
@krazicanuck90454 жыл бұрын
User error is to blame here. He was rushing it for the video. The edge profile probably looks like a snakes path on closer inspection. You should delete this video and repost another after you have more experience with this sharpener.
@brianleabo62954 жыл бұрын
Is that better than polishing compound or meguiars. I set mine to stay on as i pull . Is that bad ? I like the aftermarket belts from Texas and I use a leather belt can you use flits on that as well
@grizztough4091 Жыл бұрын
good video, but I notice, when you do the left side, you draw the blade straight back the entire length of the blade, but when you go to the right side once you pass the half way mark on the blade, your hand also pulls to the right which changes the angle the blade is now hitting the belt? have you noticed any issues doing this? Obviously the blade was sharp.
@chofujohn14 жыл бұрын
Just skipped ahead and saw him cutting paper with the new edge. OMG, I can't imagine why it won't cut using just the knife tip. The guy's technique was deeply flawed.
@jm8land4393 жыл бұрын
I noticed that your pull through on the left side was done correctly holding the blade against the guide all the way from heel to tip, but when you pulled through on the right side you were no where near the guide once you got to the tip. From the belly to the tip you were not against the guide at all. Just an observation.

Why is it he doesn't mention the burr when reprofile until the second belt. I always check the burr with the first belt or in my case stone since I hand sharpen. I'm considering this sharpener because of the time but I watch a lot of different people using this sharpener and they each do it a little differently
