Hajj Pilgrimage 2024: Hajj Pilgrims Speak To NDTV About Saudi Arabia's Deadly Heatwave

The first batch of 378 pilgrims, who arrived at Delhi Airport on Saturday evening, recounted their harrowing tale of narrowly escaping the scorching temperatures. Speaking to NDTV, the pilgrims expressed gratitude and happiness upon returning home despite facing extreme heat during their Hajj journey.
This year's Hajj pilgrimage, a cornerstone of Islam, has been overshadowed by tragic incidents exacerbated by climate change and intense heatwaves. According to an AFP report, the death toll has exceeded 1,000, with more than half of these fatalities involving unregistered worshippers who endured extreme temperatures exceeding 51 degree Celsius in Saudi Arabia.

Yet over 1300 died. Someone dropped the ball somewhere. Yes, its is exceptionally hot, but there need to be more aid stations where people can go to get out of the heat if they’re struggling. It seems those without official permits are barred from accessing some of these facilities. Is this correct? If so, its not right. They should be treated better, esp older people.

@@1972dsrai there are more than 2 millions on average attending the Hajj Season every year and these 2 millions+ have maximum capacity that the area of Mina can accommodate.... due to high human participation in Hajj , some areas has been extended to Muzdalfah after taking Permission from the Scholars. ..almost the area extends to 7-8 kms having 2 millions+ people with air conditioned camps ( air cooled / Air conditioned) ...and then to transport these people from one location to another on 1 particular time period, Government had arranged various means - Best one is High Capacity Metro Train with very frequent availability, Hundreds of Bus as well as World largest high capacity footpath having special paint with High Resistance... .. all 2 millions people are accommodated in their respective Camps each are divided in Zones having gated communities having own kitchen area with security in order to avoid infiltration from other people from another camp or unofficial people... In order to facilitate the best resource , the Government had made the whole city of Makkah a restricted Zone with No Entry to People having No Haj Permit ,even Local are not allowed to enter beyond certain areas ...Even after putting such restrictions many people,especially from other neighbouring arab countries enter the Restricted area. ...as per some reports, people in very high numbers already entered the Makkah without permit... Imagine, where there's is gated camp zone with high vigilance of entry and exit for the particular people of that camp ,how it is possible to let illegal people enter ... ...and is it logical for the Government to make arrangements for illegal to perform Hajj and if so ,then every year more and more people will enter illegally without permit...and then it will be very difficult to manage...

@@cad5273 only immortal yogis are impervious to excessive heat and excessive cold, all other mortal humans cannot withstand any Excess of these temperatures when God designed our bodies for 98.4 deg F. That way Prayer and Pilgrimage could have been modified at human effort level

@@manchikantimurty7375 .. nothing is immortal in this world, everyone will die at fix time . .. in Desert area ,temp reached to 50 deg and might be you are not aware that's why most of the people are commenting in this page without much environment exposure of Saudi Arabia...here it is very normal for temp to reach 47 - 50 degree.. throughout summer temp will be around 47-48 degree... .. .... Apart from that KSA government had made a very good arrangement beyond anyone's imagination , managing 2 Millions of people is not easy ... More than 175 countries travel to KSA for pilgrimage throughout the year...from the coldest countries to the hottest countries... .. .. People of zero knowledge nowadays write their point of view and mostly with negative comments... ...It is the heatwave with extreme temperatures on particular days touching 52 degrees and mostly affected people are those who are there without any shelter or official accommodation..and they were exposed to Harsh environments. ..
