Letterman: "I loved (the movie) so much..." Sandler: "I can't believe it!" I think that was a genuine reaction to that statement.
@Winasaurus4 жыл бұрын
Either that or downplaying it since it feels like Letterman is basically saying "Please put me in your next film Adam, I'd also like a fat cheque for sitting on a shitty set drinking coke for 5 minutes". Wouldn't surprise me if other big names were trying to compliment him just to get on the payroll.

@calvinthebold999 жыл бұрын
Mezkal Muzings I think Joshua means that Hollywood has people in it that are creative and hard working and want to create something good and also want their movie to be successful. Then there is the 'ugly' side as he put it, where they put no effort in creativity and just go for lowest brow humor. Both are business models - one doesn't have to be lazy and bad just because it also happens to want a profit
@calvinthebold999 жыл бұрын
Maybe. I just know there are good films every year that are well made, with people that cared about the job they did, that still made money. Movies being a business shouldn't mean that you can't put craft into it. Also, the half-in-the-bag video is showing this model of 'fleecing' the system to this degree is not normal in most movies, including formulaic generic comedies.
@OpenMawProductions9 жыл бұрын
Mezkal Muzings You have this tendency to use stances like "regularly" and "that happens a lot" to somehow justify or dismiss the behavior. You need to stop that. Rape, murder, and robbery happen a lot too. That does not make it okay. "Spending" 80 million dollars on a movie that was probably actually made for about 15 or 20 million at MOST is a crime.

Now, flash forward to Meyers later movie, "The Cat In The Hat" where Meyers does a plug for the Universal Studios ride right in the middle of the movie. And if you want to have a life-altering experience where you go into the theater and you see something on the big screen that is as transparent as a window you should watch Jack and Jill because it will change your life."_ Excellent point by Mike. This ISN'T a movie. It's some kind of ponzi scheme to spread money around. There's no way something this lazy, uninspired and crappy should cost 79 million dollars unless there's something unethical going on. This is split in to two Parts because they spent much effort in ripping this Movie apart detailly to show off how awful it is, more than they would on a real movie, because there, it isnt neccessary because the Movie speaks for it self. I think with both Parts being half an hour long and very exact on point with much deepness analyzed, it has a good right to exist in two Parts. If a bit this uncharacteristically inspired made it into a Sandler "comedy," it would be a self-contained uncredited contribution Robert Smigel, Jim Downey, or Bob Odenkirk had independently concocted 15 years earlier, like the baseball origin scene in THE RIDICULOUS 6. Or it would be a holdover from the original source material, like the Tetris gag in PIXELS.

Films that were made for less money than Jack and Jill (adjusted for 2011 inflation): -2001: A Space Odyssey - $64,000,000 -The Godfather Part II - $59,000,000 - Blade Runner - $70,000,000 - Return of the Jedi - $73,000,000 -Die Hard - $57,000,000 -Batman (1989) - $72,000,000 -Goodfellas - $43,000,000 -Toy Story - $44,000,000 -Kill Bill (Vol I and II) - $71,000,000 -Dawn of the Dead (2004) - $30,000,000 -Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, World's End) - $42,000,000 -There Will Be Blood + No Country For Old Men - $54,000,000 ($27,000,000 each) ...While avoiding actual low-budget movies like T1 or 28 Days Later because that's just low hanging fruit. Also The Matrix ($85,000,000), Saving Private Ryan ($96,000,000) and Apocalypse Now ($96,000,000), while more expensive, are still in the same ballpark.

Sandler is keeping his friends afloat financially with these scam movies. Apparently he bought all the main cast of Grown Ups Maseratis and charged it to the studio as bonuses, which they were probably happy to pay because the movie was being primarily financed by product placement shilling anyway. So...even though most of his movies are dogshit, I don't hate Sandler at all, as he is ripping off a bunch of heartless corporations and passing the windfall to his friends. Anyone who makes sure Norm Macdonald is not going hungry, is a-okay in my book.

14:46 the target audience also include the international market, where English is a second language. By this, I mean that humor in those countries (Im from India btw) the average persons humor hasn't evolved to smart, edgy orwitty, so jokes like basic comebacks, jump scares, silly faces, poop/fart etc. get a chuckle and a laugh. These are people who dont care about the cast or know about Sandlers film history, they see the word 'comedy' and walk in. This demographic also includes bored students/friend groups that just want to do anything other than sit at home. The subliminal messaging like Dunkin Donuts helps establish a demand and brand recognition in the market.

I love the transitions back and forth between a clearly drunk Mike waving a beer around to him calmly holding a bottle of water. Definitely one of the best episodes.

It's ironic that I'm seeing this today, as just yesterday I was talking with my son about the current state of video games, which is very similar, and I pointed out that game studios always wanted to make money off their work, but when programmers, writers and designers were running the companies they took pride in the quality of the finished product, and the time and effort put in to make it that way, but now corporate execs only care about making as much money as they can, with the least efforted needed, and the quality and fun of the product they pump out has no meaning for them.

You're probably never going to read this, but the reason why Sandler has a lot of "friends" in his movies (these types of guys don't have friends, btw, only work relationships, or people they can exploit), is probably because these "friends" give Sandler some form of kickback from their salary, the kickback being paid on a Panama or Cayman Islands account. This seems pretty obvious to me. Now the real question is: why did the government let Sandler get away with this for so many years? ..............

People often say "Movie making is a _business_ , they're made to make money!" But that's the biggest detraction, there's no surer way to kill artistic integrity than to turn it into an industry. Same goes for video games. They should be made because of the artistic inspiration of those with a vision, rather than that vision being taken advantage of to make a quick buck.

That chart graphic that starts filling the screen at 10:00 is amazing. You really learn a lot about the relationships between advertisers and movie production companies. I didn't make the connection between the Sony Vaio laptops and how the Happy Madison company is right on the Columbia Pictures lot (which is owned by Sony). Good job, guys!

Dude, you should have Mr Pinkett do all Adam Sandler movies.

A Plinkett review is designed for a film that ruins a pre-established series (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) or fails to understand what it was about the previous movies/material that made it good (Star Trek TNG films, Star Wars prequels). Exceptions are movies that personally insult Mike (Cop Dog, Baby's Day Out), and movies Mike really loves, and/or are controversial enough to warrant further analysis (Titanic, Avatar, Star Trek 2009). The Sandler films are not deserving of a Plinkett review. They do not ruin pre-established material, they do not ellicit any emotional reaction from Mike (he neither hates nor loves them), and (excepting Jack and Jill) are not complex enough behind the scenes to warrant analysis. Half In The Bag is the best way to review this film, especially considering Jay is the "Sandler Expert" between the two of them.
@cb16718 жыл бұрын
ᅚ Had you bothered to read my comment in it's entirety, you would have seen that I did in fact mention it as an exception (a film that personally insults Mike).

The entire Cornetto Trillogy, 3 excellent films, both as comedies and the types of movies they parody, cost a total of around 38 million, Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the Worlds End COMBINED cost less than half what Jack and Jill cost to make. To say that the Cornetto films are significantly better would be an understatement, not only are they far better written, directed and acted, they have actual good visuals and are still fantastic movies today.
