Either these maps are not dark 'n' gritty enough for my taste, or I'm desensitized from the dark&gritty™, I think a good approach to get that effect would be to have an atmoshpere as heavy as the concept art, but also stuff like NPCs and the Combine overseeing, part of what made Half-Life what it is, I think at least is the half of the atmoshpere the NPCs brought, but that's asking for Half-Life in Garry's Mod and at that point just make a Half-Life mod I guess. (Maybe that's why Source feels so uncanny without NPCs around)

Hey RadHaz, have you played G-String? It was a Half-Life 2 mod originally way back in the day but now its a seperate game and still in the source engine. Really good game. If you havent tried it out i recommend it for the HL2 feeling and its up there in the atmosphere department.

some betastyle maps i suggest: - rp_industrial17 industrial17 is a series of maps: rp_industrial17_2017, rp_industrial17_beta8, rp_industrial17_beta9, rp_industrial17_betastyle_v1_4_1, rp_industrial17_destroyed, rp_pb_industrial17_v2, and rp_nc_industrial17_v3. - zs_old_city_canals_v2d not much to say here, just a zs map featuring the beta canals. - gm_erie_canal this is a previous front page map, personally i dont recommend it for sandbox ir base building, but the narrow deep alleyways make for a pretty decent driving or mp arena. - gm_klainer_lab_beta this map is based on kleiner's lab from dark interval. - gm_vertigo_view made by the guy behind erie canal, its a small, simple map, consisting of one apartment with an overview of a beta city 17. - kleiner simple name, but its a port of the massive lab kleiner used to have in the beta. - rtbr_d1_terminal, rtbr_d1_freetvs two maps from the beginning of raising the bar. -gm_beta_citadel, gm_beta_citadel_metal an amalgamtion of beta citadel levels, and retextured version of that respectively. probably more too theres quite a few
