The remaster from 2023 is actually really cool. Native support includes even full 4K resolution and high refresh rates. They fixed UI elements scaling so I don't need a microscope to see my health in 4K resolution too. Also the HL deathmatch was sprung back to life with crossfire servers being constantly up and populated. HL deathmatch is the biggest chaos arena shooter I ever played.

HD pack is still unfinished and doesn't change surroundings (LD pack is still superior) all that they did is hehe we will add some models to player model selector and call it an big update for hype, same stuff for 20 anniversary update for hl2, not much actually helpful stuff, made for hype (also dead hl2dm and sourcemod plug-ins)

4:52 incidentally enough as a coder by trade, the term "src" as a shorthand of "source" is a common directory name of a developing program or game's source code as coders are not really good at making creative names. I am not sure of the actual reason for adding "gold" to "src" to become "goldsrc," but I assume with a game going "gold" (where production of the game is finalized and are put on disk for publishing), I assume Valve just append "gold" to "src" as a convenient way to say this is what the engine will start for the games and expansions that follow

You know, to be honest, I think Half-Life gets too much credit for the narrative stuff. That's not to say it doesn't have the _widespread_ impact, but I think it's treated as being more of an originator than it is. One of the things that you learn about art as a general rule is that the big influence pieces are typically proceeded by foundational works which themselves don't get as heavily remembered, but without whom the medium would not be what it became. There is no Smells Like Teen Spirit and thus no cultural dominance of Nirvana without The Pixies. There is no Nine Inch Nails or Trent Reznor in general without Ministry (or Marilyn Manson as we know him without Nine Inch Nails for that matter). There is no Batman without The Shadow. There is no Call of Duty without Medal of Honor. And I think it is extremely fair to say that likewise, there is no Half-Life without two games. The second being Strife, which came out a year before Half-Life's Alpha Build was built, so early into the development. But the first was the Mac's competitor to Doom. At the time, Doom was only on Microsoft systems, so Apple needed a competitor. What they got was an increadingly mindscrew, story-heavy FPS whose impact is most recognized for it's spiritual successor series in 2001. I don't think there's a Half-Life without Marathon.

You know.. I never had too much of an issue with the long jump control jumping shenanigans, you had to do that enough anyways as that was the way of minor clambering and or mantling by way of Ongnok, Thai warrior, fully clearing the object with your legs and/or chest high ledge.. and I get what they were going for, with the whole oh you're going to make a extra springy jump, by crouching and then using the power of your legs.. like mechanically it actually is kind of nifty.. and then.. double tap.. Yeah that.. that actually that actually makes more sense.. like.. maybe back then it didn't but I'm pretty sure it did cuz I'm pretty sure everybody was like what? And I think a lot of that had to do with jump crouching all the time.. I guess in this case it was crouch jumping instead of jump crouching.. But like crouch jumping was muscle memory for the most part in the early 3D late '90s era.. so now in order to jump even further and do a mechanical thing that is kind of weird because it's it's really not that much longer of a jump that you could already rock it with your air control.. you kind of maybe got the impression that they were just talking about jump crouching really.. and then you know... A few hours later you realize oh goodness.. This is this is a thing it's kind of weird you don't really have to do it to make the jumps... But it seems like you're supposed to do it.. But you know... Oh well.. If it wasn't such an odd thing and just now in my head thinking mechanically like gosh that's kind of cool I kind of want to do something with that with the whole crouch and then jump aspect as far as working on movement and parkour and Half-Life 2 modding, which is not really where I focus but.. Just as accidental side effects of doing things like pushback on kicks and whatnot I have a whole bunch of strangely mechanical combat related traversal that's super smooth cuz you know.. source engine rocks for that... But then of course you got the the conundrum of.. okay so I don't need need to do the splits over a police car, and then copy that form to get up a staircase or minor ledge.. But.. now I've got omnidirectional crouch sliding, which is a wonderful Dodge and makes the antlion boss fights more fun, and is just really cool to try to change up mechanically how you're doing things since it's multidirectional and reasonably fast... And yeah, again it would make mechanical sense, I already have a kick that rockets you into the air when you jump or to bounce off of walls with it and some other things.. and initially I did that for feedback cuz I was having trouble.. But it was worth trying a bunch of things given how feature Rich the mod I was adapting was and allowing you to drop kick shit lol which is awesome cuz it is.. thing is if you're in the air you got no friction in source.. and a more professional implementation would have made sure to limit the player to the horizontal axis with the feedback kick, and initially I was thinking wow that'd be cool to kick away from a exploding barrel.. or get distance which was a problem on a count of the NPC controller being problematic when moving them in space not accounted for like pushing them... And I was desperate to do anything to get the kick to not feel pathetic by comparison to the other kick which I ended up keeping around because I still haven't found satisfaction but.. now I can ricochet off walls and system shock myself into the air for overhead passes.. it's a hitscan game so that doesn't really help, but I'm working on that lol.. But it is .. absolutely cool.. and given how many invisible walls are in Half-Life 2 on a count of box stacking, it didn't really break the game terribly if given some self-control of course. Now I can jump 10 ft into the air, and then immediately slide in any direction with full force out of that jump which is cool.. is it easier to just slide in any direction to get around a wall or something Yes.. is it useful Yes.. is it way cooler to jump 10 ft in the air and then ricochet yourself like you've got full-on wire foo absolutely yes.. Is that better than springing forward for an extra jump.. probably.. does that mean that needs to go away? I don't think so but then lies in the problem of trying to communicate any of these things to people, now you don't need them to succeed you kind of want to make it so that you might need to do some of the cool stuff to succeed, but.. One thing I've noticed over the last 20 years is if a gamer isn't required to do something anymore, and with the rate the games play themselves, especially on a controller where it does it by design.. with limited access to inputs at simultaneous times and requiring and relying on contextual pre-baked animation cutscene basically.. or all the melee in Doom 2016.. a cutscene when you hit a button.. How do you make something mechanically rich and autonomous and communicate that and make it worth someone's time to do it.. people have done it all day with the occasional assassin's Creed that lets you do Prince of Persia stuff sometimes.. a game that is traversal base that took away the jump button and turned a wonderful freeform fighting game combat style into dance dance revolution. You ruined platforming assassin Creed.. But yeah people still have gone the extra mile to pull cool things out of cool things with what they're given often in spite of a system that is designed to automate itself. Honestly, I kind of applaud and I miss that mentality of of doing something that didn't make video game sense or even keyboard and mouse sense and kind of pushed against some logic of pre-established input workarounds for a function like jump crouching.. to do something like the long jump that was biologically mechanically logical for someone that hadn't played a video game, that would kind of make sense if they had ever done a jump before.. Are you playing a game, like this is what it comes down to or are you playing a simulation in 3D space where you take the avatar of someone in extraordinary situations... It is always disappointing when the idea of playing a game comes into contrast with that.. gets in the way of that and limits it and it's potential to actually feel like something..
