Happy HAI #100 day!!!!! Forgot to get me a gift? That's alright, I forgive you... as long as you submit a topic suggestion here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUdlvw6YgU44J8AnM2U_ZvRMyvh_CUM51LYSqF5nYJB9d1-w/viewform?usp=sf_link Without patriots like you suggesting topics there, I'd have to spend literally minutes trying to find topics each week. Therefore, if we end up using your topic, you'll get a free HAI t-shirt shipped to your door, cave opening, hatch, or whatever opening your place of residence might have.

From Wikipedia: TV pickups occur during breaks in popular television programmes and are a surge in demand caused by the flushing of toilets (leading to a surge at the pumping stations) and the opening of fridge doors by millions of people.[2] There is a common misconception that the number one driver of TV pickup is the boiling of kettles. In fact, this only creates a pull on the local network for a short period of time until the water has boiled, and can therefore be managed relatively easily, whereas flushing the toilet causes a longer surge at the water and sewerage pumping stations, and opening the refrigerator lets the chilled air escape, causing the compressor to run. These loads are more of a problem for the grid. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_pickup kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2S6p4RueqyEntE

The thing about kettles being the main source of TV pickup is a bit of a myth. The biggest source is surprisingly from the massive number of toilets being flushed simultaneously (because everyone had been holding it in till after the match/tv show finished), which requires water pumping stations to come online to maintain pressure in the water mains. Another source that outstrips the kettles is from the number of fridges being opened (presumably to get milk for the tea), which then warm up slightly resulting in the compressor kicking in to cool everything back down

In reference to the tidal road in France, there's also one off the coast of Northumberland in England that temporarily connects Lindisfarne (colloquially known as Holy Island) to the mainland. The road is so long and the tides rise with such speed that there are safety huts spread across the road for anyone that gets stranded, the official policy from the local government is to just wait it out (barring stormy weather conditions).
