John Oates definitely holds his own vocally. I learned to appreciate this song years later. I love the jazz, R&B, pop sound to it. One of Hall and Oates's best.

Big Bang Boom is their best album by a country mile, and you are dead right about John, a superb vocalist in his own right, but matched with Darryl's voice its a chemical reaction and magic is made. I love how much love these two cats from Philly get globally. Philly is the home of vocal harmony imho.

This song literally holds up to any of Daryl’s vocals. I always loved this track. I was 12 when this came out and had all their records.. to this day I can’t believe this one wasn’t way higher on the charts

Agree ! It would have done much better as the album's third single. I love "Some things are better left unsaid", and it should have done better, but this one is loaded with hooks, and immediately grabs you by the neck.

Two ways we can thank them are by spelling Oates correctly and by calling them Daryl Hall and John Oates (like all album covers do) instead of just "Hall & Oates." The duo said they think the latter makes them sound like a law firm or a two headed monster. Blessings to you and yours.

I was around as a teenager in the 80s, when this was charting. It stalled about half-way up the charts, then started falling out of airplay--a real shame I thought even then. John Oates is playing in Napa next month!!---April 16 2023, tickets only $60, i'm in the third row! Saw H&O play in Vancouver over a decade ago, and everyone had a great time.

John Oats was a hidden talent. He had a soulful voice but record producers want Daryl Hall to do most of the singing. How humble was John to put his talent on the backburner.

This song is unique in that John Oates starts the song off so well. Too bad he kinda always played second fiddle. I've seen them in person 3 times and Hall is clearly the dominant dude.

Funnily enough, Out of Touch was written and was actually gonna be song by John Oates - but in his biography, he decided against it because Daryl sang most of their top hitters! So, John let him sing Out of Touch instead of himself. Imagine what Out of Touch might've sounded like with John's vocals... Ooo.

@@TH3_W1ZARD Back in the seventies, John was a beast on the live vocals. He must have experienced some vocal problems in the eighties because he just seemed to fade into the background. I'm curious, does he mention anything about that in his book? (by the way, you've just reminded me I need to buy it)

How popular was this song with most people in 1985? It was the 4th and last single off Big Bam Boom, and only hit #30. I grew up on it in the late 80s-early 90s just on mix tapes but it's one of their best songs

+JPMcFly1985Two It was a mild hit on the radio as I recall but for me all their released singles were terrific back then. "Out Of Touch" was the big smash off the album the reached No.1 on the billboards charts in the fall of '84

+JPMcFly1985Two I don't think this aired much on MTV (which was basically a national radio station back then), certainly not nearly as much as Out of Touch, which was omnipresent for a few weeks. In hindsight I think this is actually the better song -- the harmonies are just irresistible.
@mushmorant9253
@mushmorant9253 8 жыл бұрын
+JPMcFly1985Two Not very. I don't remember seeing this video in those days and I doubt it was widely played (possibly due to controversy over the mild homosexual content). The song is, however, familiar to me (I didn't buy the album) so I will assume I must have heard it on radio at least a few times. Out of Touch was probably the biggest single from this album, but Method of Modern Love (which I remember much better) certainly also got a lot of airplay (on T.V. and radio) and attention being included on compilation albums of the year's "hits".
@xennial80sxberner

Thanks. Yeah I'd agree with that, "out of touch" and to a lesser extent "method" seem like the only songs that are still remembered or played. Maybe since this was the 4th single it got more lost in the shuffle? "All American Girl" and "bank on your love" are two other songs I think that should/could have been good singles.
