2022's Halloween Ends continues the return of Michael Myers from 2018's Halloween and 2021's Halloween Kills. They even used the Filmento idea all the way back from my video about first entry, in which Michael Myers shouldn't be only an old man in a mask but more of an idea that can spread and corrupt. Awesome! Unfortunately, that's not enough to save this movie, because it stumbles into a couple horror pitfalls which make it not scary. A horror movie where the horror doesn't work! In today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's see what those pitfalls are so that we can avoid them in our own horror scripts.

Halloween Ends (2022)
This is Laurie Strode’s last stand. After 45 years, the most acclaimed, revered horror franchise in film history reaches its epic, terrifying conclusion as Laurie Strode faces off for the last time against the embodiment of evil, Michael Myers, in a final confrontation unlike any captured on-screen before. Only one of them will survive. Icon Jamie Lee Curtis returns for the last time as Laurie Strode, horror’s first “final girl” and the role that launched Curtis’ career. Curtis has portrayed Laurie for more than four decades now, one of the longest actor-character pairings in cinema history. When the franchise relaunched in 2018, Halloween shattered box office records, becoming the franchise’s highest-grossing chapter and set a new record for the biggest opening weekend for a horror film starring a woman. Four years after the events of last year’s Halloween Kills, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) and is finishing writing her memoir. Michael Myers death scene Halloween ends bad movie garbage movie everything wrong with halloween ends full movie watch online free 4k clip hd best moments halloween ends kill counter michael myers death laurie vs michael myers halloween ends explained ending all kills compilation honest trailer halloween ends box office flop reaction review mistakes hasn’t been seen since. Laurie, after allowing the specter of Michael to determine and drive her reality for decades, has decided to liberate herself from fear and rage and embrace life. But when a young man, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell; The Hardy Boys, Virgin River), is accused of killing a boy he was babysitting, it ignites a cascade of violence and terror that will force Laurie to finally confront the evil she can’t control, once and for all.

Halloween (2018)
Director David Gordon Green’s slasher film is a direct sequel to the 1978 film of the same name. Four decades later, survivor Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) braces herself for a final confrontation with serial killer Michael Myers (Nick Castle and James Jude Courtney) after he escapes from confinement while being transferred to a maximum-security prison.

It's very clearly shown that Michael is not as strong as he used to be. They strongly imply that Michael's power is being passed to Corey. I think this is a really cool concept, turning Michael Myers into flesh and blood, in my opinion this makes him more terrifying, because he's actually desperate to kill, not just indifferent to his victims
@rpg1497

@@timblom7364 yeah but that idea doesn't work in a timeline where we were JUST showing him being a supernatural character. If they wanted to make this mostly shit film, then they should've just done it as an offshoot that was mostly about Corey with maybe only one scene with Michael Myers, named it something else, and then concluded the trilogy in a different film. This movie doesn't work with any of the other films on such a level that it's actually astonishing and makes it almost impossible to believe the same person was part of all 3 films.

My BIGGEST problem with the movie is that the trailers lied to us. They implied that Michael and Lowry would be the center of this movie, culminating in a final showdown but what we GOT was a weird RomCom movie where this sad kid goes on a killing spree, beats Michael myers up with little effort, and then Michael and Lowry have a glorified cameo with a showdown at the end.

Michael Myers is a great case study. The ratio of how paper thin his premise is to how many lousy cash grab sequels they got from him is truly impressive, even compared to a lot of more modern dumpster fire franchises.
@circa1919
@circa1919 Жыл бұрын
Well the interesting part is that you can have a paper thin villain, meaning you have very little information on them, which adds to their mystique and makes them interesting. The problem however is that people assume that there IS more information there, and if you make further installments you have to pay off that assumption. With each passing installment where that isn't paid off or at the very least isn't addressed in a satisfactory way, the more it becomes apparent no thought was put in. A lack of thought vs. a lack of information are very different things when constructing your villain

Yeah, Halloween 1 was great because it was so simple. And every sequel hurts that premise by explaining more of it, which John Carpenter knew, which is why he was drunk when he wrote the second one. It’s literally the second one and it’s already a cash grab the writer didn’t even want to make.

Not just Halloween, Friday the 13th (Jason) and Nightmare on Elm street (Freddy Krueger) are more or less in the same boat. I cant help but compare it to the MCU, it starts out so great because the original premise was very successful, and the hype at first for horror movies was great. But then slowly over time they just dont stop pumping out sequels and eventually it just finds itself in a shit show AKA Phase 4 or all the useless sequels for these horror movies. On a side note though, even though they were shit at the very least I'd actually want to watch them all because they provide some fucking entertainment, I dont feel inclined to watch anything on Phase 4 and I am yet to.

What bothered me about this film was that basically every character was just unreasonably awful or stupid. The townspeople's hatred of Laurie didn't make a lick of sense; it could've worked but it was always on such flimsy premises that they essentially blamed him for Michael Myers, because she... teased him? What? And how stupid was Allyson to believe the child killing murderer over her mother? The guy even told her he'd killed someone, clearly referring to someone OTHER than the child he'd already accidentally killed, and she doesn't even ask about it and it's not brought up again. I find it impossible to sympathize with this characters or the stakes that the movie is trying to build when everyone acts like an alien.

They want you to feel sorry for Allyson when the doctor didn't give her the job as a nurse, but she doesn't deserve the job, she couldn't check if Cosey was still alive and decided to leave the house without trying to do anything. In a situation like this she couldn't do much for the adrenaline of the moment, but she didn't even check his pulse, she didnt even call the 9-1-1 or for help, she just left the house and moments later returns to save her grandmother from Michael Myers.

What people don’t understand about Halloween is that the main thing that makes the series so good isn’t the scares but the suspense, you don’t need to scare the audience every 15 minutes in a Halloween movie, you just need to make them feel uneasy, that why Halloween opens with Micheal Myers escaping the asylum, why H2 opens with us seeing that Micheal survived and that Laurie got sedated and why the opening scene in H4 shows us that Micheal is still alive and that when he finds out that he has a living niece his first response is to start murdering people. Halloween is always at best when the audience knows as soon as the movie starts everyone is in danger
@AliRadicali
@AliRadicali Жыл бұрын
For some odd reason, sequels to slasher movies seem to forget that suspense is much more important than having a constant stream of scares and kills. A guy with a big knife running around and stabbing teenagers isn't really that scary; the formula only works if the movie gives us characters to care about and time to start worrying that something is going to happen to them.

Ends is giving fan fiction energy. It's a dead on arrival concept. The franchise takes a lot of time trying to rationalize Michael, to uncover the sources of his power and evil, and within this trilogy, there are multiple answers. Demystifying a supernatural being robs them not only of their power within the story, but their power over the audience. By the end of the movie, both Michael and Corey are reduced just being some dudes, the legacy of this franchise nerfed to "it's just the mask bro". I always thought that Michael needed the mask in a figurative, self-image sense, not in the literal, it gives him power sense. At the core of horror is mystery, when it's gone, the story loses its appeal. The director said that he always envisioned Michael as being nothing more than a man, and on top of that not aligning with everything he's survived, I just don't understand why he'd want to do that. You start asking questions like "wait, does Michael eat, what kind of things does he eat, does Michael sleep", things that take you out of the world because instead of fearing the unknown, you're analyzing and trying to connect that world to yours. And yeah, ordinary people can be scary, but before this movie, Michael was never an ordinary person. I guess what I'm saying is that instead of being some guy, possessed by evil in some way, I think Michael is at his most interesting when he is simply the evil itself. We don't know how it happened, we don't how to stop it, we don't know if there are more like him out there. There are a few cool scenes in this, but overall, this is easily the most disappointing movie in the series. Yes, more than Resurrection. We knew that was gonna be bad lol.

See this i really resonate with. I fell in love with the Halloween movies because Myers is such a simple terrifying monster. He is pure unstoppable evil. He isn't lawful evil, he doesn't plan, he doesn't care. He is just a force of nature that obliterates everything in his path. I was so excited because the last two movies seemed to be really hammering home that Michael was basically just an animal going home. Then they threw it all away. I was hoping Laurie would use the fact that he is an unthinking monster to lure him into a huge trap, drop him in the shredder, entomb him in cement, cut his head clean off. I don't care. Just make it clear that Michael will not be stopped until the poor corpse his soul is reanimating is finally annihilated...

I feel this movie could've been saved if we just intercut the extended opening with Micheal in the storm drain killing the hobo or some kids playing around so we get the idea that Micheal is an evil monster in a cave properly conveyed. Intersperse those scenes in the opening and you keep the audience on edge and it starts meaning something when Corey starts "feeding" his enemies to Micheal and we get the impression that Micheal isn't just sparing Corey or letting him beat him up randomly- that he is deliberately "infecting" him with evil. Show that Micheal is still a threat. It would also emphasize the difference between Micheal's killing of anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path versus Corey's killing of anyone who wronged him or his lover in some way, which should ultimately have escalated until he's killing for pleasure and for the sake of killing and killing innocents once the "infection" has fully progressed. Hell, you could have him start to stare at his knife instead of the victim as he reaches that point of absolute evil.

I mean, this should have been a spin-off. It would have been cool for Michael to take the back seat while we can explore how he corrupted the town and we can have a great character study of Corey. if Michael just slightly interacts with the story or is not in it at all, it doesnt matter. they can then even estabilish that "healing/getting stronger by killing" that was super vague in this one. it would make sense that Michael somehow finds this one out by killing 1 person, and then goes out for a final killing spree in an actual Halloween movie. and then they can do the final showdown in H4, that can really be about Laurie vs Michael (or town vs Michael. just something where Michael is actually the main villain and is in the movie). but having him in his final movie for like 5 minutes, while also getting beaten in a hand-to-hand combat by some random dude that was unable to defend himself from some marching band bullies, and then losing yet another hand-to-hand combat with a 60+ yo lady, was just so weird. and yes yes, I know it is Laurie, but in Kills, he easily obliterated an entire fire department, and later an armed mob of 20 people. NOBODY should be able to beat him 1 on 1 in a fair fight, not even Laurie. I like that they actually tried to do something new, but then again, fans expect some kind of a movie and default should be to give fans what they want. if they wanna reverse people's expectations, they need to be damn smart about it. this was not it...

I think if the Corey story was made into maybe a 2-3 part mini series set between Kills and Ends without him ever finding Myers weakened in the sewers early in the story it could work. Like the whole idea was he was a monster created from the hysteria of the town itself, something far bigger than Myers' actual influence. Have Corey still slowly descend into the psycho he becomes as a result of the environment being so toxic towards him. The mini series could end with him fighting Laurie/Allyson and leaving badly injured THEN finding Myers in the sewers where Myers kills him and THAT awakens Myers killer instinct again which would lead into a new Halloween Ends movie focusing on Laurie and Myers final confrontation.

@caldw615
@caldw615 Жыл бұрын
@@Gu3ssWhatsN3XT I think it could draw an interesting paralel to Myers too on the nature of evil. Michael as far as we are lead to believe had a fairly normal childhood with a family who loved him until he eventually snapped one day and murdered Judith. There's hints saying he was a quiet kid sure but not totally mute and they never go into detail about if he ever had some sort of traumatic experience or came from an abusive environment to trigger his murderous intent. Michael wasn't turned evil by circumstance, something at his core was just fucked up and inherintly inhuman. Corey on the other hand seemed like a mostly nice normal young man in spite of his weirdly protective (possibly incestuously abusive) mother. He only got as bad as he did because the whole town villainised him for the accident and he internalised it. Eventually letting the hatred for him consume him and making him turn full spree killer in a sort of "well if they see me as a monster I'll just become one" sort of way. Obviously Corey is still messed up for choosing to go down that path but he would have otherwiss probably lead a normal life if it wasn't for the hysterua surrounding his accident and Myers' previous murders. Is evil something truly inherant waiting to be drawn out by someone's surroundings? Is it something only created when the bad actions of others have an affect on the innocent? Or is it something that is so deeply rooted that even in a loving/caring environment it can still leak out eventually like with Michael? Or perhaps it's a combination of both on a spectrum.

I hate that this movie is getting credit for being “different” when we’ve had multiple Halloween movies that changed core elements of the story while still maintaining an intimidating and dignified Michael (whether people like Curse or RZ’s Halloween 2 or not, they are absolute departures that actually stick by their decisions), all of the Corey elements are almost directly lifted from Christine, and the movie doesn’t fully commit to these “risks” because the character is killed before the climax. He was an hour+ of buildup for a five minute payoff and then he’s written out of the movie like he was never in it. There are parts of the movie that are enjoyable, but it was a terrible way to end the trilogy and it deserves every piece of criticism it receives. The Halloween elements are poor and the “new and different” elements are an illusion. They didn’t know what to do but knew they had people’s money. In an alternate universe, this basic plot line is used for the middle movie and a movie more like Kills is the grand finale, with both Michael and Corey on the loose (instead of the other escaped mental patient) and Laurie and Allyson are hunting their respective boogeymen as they have separate killing sprees. You have Michael return to full power, Corey gets to actually become a second Shape, Allyson becomes more important, and you blend the old and new generations together. And knowing Jamie Lee Curtis….I knew she wouldn’t die lol. She got to be morally right in all 3 movies, she knew what everybody else didn’t, she got to call them all “sheep,” and then she kills two “Shapes” with almost no problem. Curtis is all about Curtis lol.

But after Michael kills the cop Michael becomes the main villain and kills everyone with Corey assisting and watching and learning. Have Allyson listen to Laurie which is weird how she turned but ig. If you ask me a truly great Halloween film should feel like you're playing a morbid game of Where's Waldo. Part of what made the old Halloween films fun was to look in the background to see if you can find Michael lurking for a moment before disappearing which tells you he's there but doesn't tell you when he's going to strike. That is what builds suspense. Unfortunately many sequels since then have decided Michael should just walk up and begin stabbing with no real build-up to it.

I agree with you. Which is why I don't understand the hate H4-H6 PC get, even though those sequels did it too, even if Michael didn't have those moments as often as in H 1978. H5 does the things H 1978 did. And people hate it because of some things that aren't even that bad, instead of being happy for a decent sequel. Examples: -Rachel's death (no one acted that way when Alice died in F13 part 2's opening scene) -Michael crying (showing emotions doesn't seem to be something that people want to see with Michael, even though those scenes make sense in the context of the timeline) -The Thorn-symbol and the man in black -Look of Michael and the Myer's house -Tina being anoying The last decent sequel that makes a good Halloween movie is Halloween 6 Producer's Cut. The movies after that didn't feel like Halloween movies at all. H20 was more of a Scream movie, DGG's Michael is the Jason of Halloween without his morals. On the topic of the second point, the “horror” that Halloween Ends presents would work a lot better if Michael Meyers was the main character of the movie. Something similar to Joker where it shows the victims in a negative light to where we don’t turn on him. But since Michael Meyers is not the protagonist but in fact the villain, the scenes fall apart.

Ive been a fan since I was 3 I thought the cut off tongue on the vinyl was funny and the ending fight was dope, the only part that bored me was the Laurie and frank relationship, the soundtrack keeps me entertained because I am obsessed with the themes due to my autism, the kid at the start was inflicted with micheals evil but he killed that kid so it got back to him I had mixed feelings About the movie when I saw it in dbox but liked it on rewatch because I hate these characters so much and watch them get brutally murdered is so fun, and the relationship between Allyson And Corey is realistic you can fall in love at first sight and Cory wasn't involved with micheal yet shes seems to like the danger, what I waited for was the kills mostly and I liked that the cop was the redhead who bullied Lonnie on the night of 1978, I didn't really care about micheal it's a corey movie its a nod to Christine John carpenter helped make it and was on set too, I like the idea of people being able to be like micheal because we've had to many micheal movies I want more halloween 3 type movies, the visuals were amazing too Lori gets to be more like her 1978 version all nerdy and stuff again I found the tits joke funny I liked nick castles appearance this movies what the original halloween 4 by John carpenter was gonna be, I'm sure people will hate this now and like it in the future like with never three because I'm Autistic to argue against me would be like talking to a brick wall lol

The "Curse of Thorn" story arc made the most sense. Michael (or whoever else) being a vehicle for a demon summoned by an ancient Celtic curse ties everything in with Samhain ("SOW-when"). Or at least good enough for a pop culture franchise (maybe not so much for history buffs interested in real ancient Celtic culture and their festivals and whatnot). Halloween 3: Season of the Witch was the most authentically Halloween-like of all the Halloween movies, the story being built around the real psychopathic purpose of Samhain, including brutal child sacrifice. 1:41 No Evil Dead 2 reference?! Denied! 11:38 Also, why the blood? That's not 100% medically accurate. All the damage would be internal. People think about forensic details nowadays. How would Columbo write a scene like this? Well, he wouldn't, but that's beside the point.

I really wish this movie had kept Cory alive, like a new Michael. It would've been a great way to keep the franchise new and alive while still being able to keep its iconic character. I personally was really into the movie (with a healthy serving of suspension of disbelief to get me through) up until the very end, and I was super excited to see a new Shape. I'll add one more thing here. The whole Michael not being just a person but and idea of evil or the shape if you will, is a decent plot-point to explore and it has always been around in this franchise so it only made sense that they finally fully went for it here, however the problem with that concept for me in Halloween Ends was the way the new killer was introduced and portrayed. In my opinion it went completely against the whole shape of evil idea by getting us to know this character as well as their exact facial features. It would have been hell of a lot cooler and it would have made much more sense to me if they had focused on Michael completely once again but at the end they could have hinted that sooner or later, somewhere that same evil could possibly be reborn in a different family, different child but same evil, same face (or no actual face for that matter) that would also have served as a perfect setup for potential sequels as well. Moreover, the new killer was way too emotional for the Shape and that whole tacked on fake love story was absolutely misplaced honestly.

I love your mention of how often you should be scaring your audience. I used to listen to horror novels for fun, but then I started getting into the newer novels and none of them were scary. The one that made me give up on the genre, I was 3 hours in and only 2 mildly creepy things happened. The author had talked more about modern politics than the ghost. He was lucky I gave him 3 hours. I tried deleting that one from my library entirely, but I still can’t figure it out on audible, but I left it with a 1 star review and ripped into it. I don’t watch entertainment to be told how I should think on political issues. I may go back and listen to Amityville horror again, that was good. Or Turn of the Screw. If you’re down to try manga, Junji Ito is the best horror creator out there, in my opinion. I love Sensor and Venus in the Blind Spot. Anne Rice’s Witching Hour is pretty good, too. Horror has never been my genre of choice, but when I do choose to pick it up, it’s gotta keep me on my toes or it’s going to be put back down.

I mean why would he be standing behind the door as it’s being kicked. It would have made sense that when the he was hit by the door, the force from being hit was enough to push him back against the railing that he broke through it which caused him to fall to his death. That is a major inconsistency.

Wether you believe in them or not, there have definitely been recorded events of things like this happening, so it wouldn’t feel too “out there” and it doesn’t have to be a lot, maybe he just actually talks in this one, and his voice sounds like multiple voices speaking at once, something creepy, and alluding to ideals, but never actually coming to an absolute conclusion, because I think it’s better to leave the mystery of him unanswered, however, you could still reveal some things

Halloween Ends was a letdown. But I will say I was surprised that the elderly lady that saw her husband getting stabbed with different knives lived as well as Julien, I liked him he was funny and cute (looks like my nephew). The Halloweens that occurred in “2018” I liked the characters bc they were relatable and grew to like them and hope they don’t die. For example, the babysitter and Julien; him witnessing his favorite sitter getting killed, and trying to warn the boyfriend to run, it felt real. In Halloween Ends, you could tell the characters getting killed “deserved” it, so it was like WGAF about them. I felt HE had so many questions unanswered and such as Ben Tramer. I wanna know who he was, how he looked, and was he still alive in this time line universe? Corey’s relationship with his mom was weird, no back story. How is MM still alive and (from what we can tell) hasn’t killed anyone since 2018? Why did MM take an interest to Corey and tag teamed?

I think the weirdest part of this movie is that Laurie doesn’t react at all when she sees Corey wearing Michael’s mask. She should’ve been surprised by it and tried to find out where he got it since that could’ve lead to the capture of Michael. It’s also weird that Laurie and Allyson don’t talk about how Corey and Michael showed up at their house at the same time. Did they think that Corey and Michael were killing together? Did Laurie suspect that Corey stole the mask and Michael just wanted it back? Or did she think Michael wanted revenge against her? It’s just strange that the characters don’t talk about any of this. Also, it’s baffling how there’s no mention of Laurie wasting forty years of her life thinking Michael was planning to get her. When Hawkins told her in Kills that Michael didn’t care about her, she barely reacted to that and there’s no mention of this in Ends. I thought that would’ve been a major focus of her character, to realize what a terrible mistake she made.
