They nearly destroyed the Galaxy, so let’s put them in some cheap glass boxes and hope nothing goes wrong while our limbless robot goes crazy watching them. At least the Endless were contained much more properly, put in Cylixes they can’t just break out of, in a sealed glass-less room nobody can find. As for the Harbinger? Eh. 100% agree. Escharum does his best but none of the Banished villains have much depth and the Harbinger is just very meh as we don't find out much at all about the Endless. Give me the Covenant any day of the week.

“Bassus is deadus” lol good one. I agree with everything pretty much. The game really suffers from a lack of diversity and like you said, imagination. The lack of different biomes hurts it a lot. The lack of variety in enemy types, like silent shadow at night, special elites hunting you down, vehicle patrols, really hurt it as well. The side objectives seem very… thin. Lackin substance. I think that having enemies do things across the map in real time at random (and UNSC forces doing the same to truly flesh out the fact that this is a war, and that you are inspiring hope the more you help the unsc) like establishing bases, retacking bases you capture, staging assaults on marines, and stuff like that, would go a long way in making the world feel ALIVE. This is stuff that would pry be added in future updates and dlc, but it sucks it’s not here now where it should be. I also am very much against this whole “endless” story. You simply cannot replace the flood as a new big enemy. And I did not like the harbinger. Her dialogue was cheesy, repetitive, corny, stereotypical, and just boring. And like you said, we learn nothing about her and the endless. And yea there will be future content expanding the story, but it doesn’t matter because this is all we have rn to base our opinions of this new story on. However I must say that overall, this game is a massive improvement coming off of halo 5. Great video dude!

Cheers Michael, hope all's good with you mate. And yeh, everything is done to absolute death and there's barely anything I can think of in the game that is just a 'one and done' awesome moment. Previous titles. even 343's to an extent' were packed full of amazing set pieces, while in Infinite there's basically nothing. The Endless is just... bizzare. How can they introduce a brand new enemy but say absolutely nothing about them, it's so odd. Whole game is strange as it feels like a reboot due to the dropping of the previously Cortana storyline but then also feels like a prequel to a reboot at the same time as it doesn't really introduce anything much.

I gotta say, your concept for ascending the tower sounds really interesting. I do think it would have also injected a bit of variety into the scenery. Instead of being one samey looking tower, each level you go up could have had a different method of torture that they specialized in. It almost feels like, "Why make this place a torture tower if the tower itself plays no meaning?" and it makes the tower aspect feel like it was merely there to make the level last longer. They could have gone with the aforementioned option alluding to various methods of torture with each level being worse and worse until you get to the torturer's personal chamber. You don't even necessarily need to show dead bodies littering the floor as you ascend either. Simply have less and less living marines. Maybe the first level you find a squad of remaining guys asking you to find the rest of their team further up the tower. As you climb, you find a few survivors who talk about their fallen comrades on the same level. Then, you suddenly stop finding ANY marines left alive. The idea being that each level is more brutal and leaves less survivors, and the story being that the people stubborn enough to keep their secrets get sent up higher and higher until they break one way or another. That would definitely paint a better idea of exactly what the Spartan at the top had gone through, and it would also put a bit more emphasis on how strong a Spartan truly is with him being the lone survivor at the top of the tower where normal humans wouldn't have even made it that far before falling.

The video ends at the same place where I realized that nothing all that interesting gameplay wise was going to happen, I still had hope and intrigue to where the story was going, but it really felt like the campaign had been given a quick once over and that was it, no iteration or variation whatsoever. I'd say the highlight gameplay wise was Pelican Down, I really enjoyed that section because it was something new and in hindsight it's obvious why they showed it off in the trailers so much. I know I say this every time, but, another great video Ben! You have a certain je ne sais quoi that puts your videos far above other channels with much more subscribers and longer tenure on KZbin. Both as somewhat questionable support characters. Not bad, have their moments...but leave a lot to be desired. I think the worst offence from 343, which is hard when there is so much to choose from is definitely trivialising the Flood...something worse.
@BenPlaysGames2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Burge! The treatment of the Endless and by extension the downplaying of the Flood is perhaps my least favourite thing about the game's story. The plot is already close enough to Combat Evolved what with you fighting off essentially the covenant again on another ring, but for goodness sake, surely they could have come up with something other than "and then halfway through the game or so a new galaxy ending enemy is introduced". Especially when they then fail to show that enemy at all during the campaign 🙈

Awesome review, Ben. I for one really enjoyed the campaign, but your points all definitely stand. We waited 6 years for essentially a part 1 of 5. It feels like this game was trying to reboot Halo CE by making the story really simple and not explaining the characters much, which I feel just doesn’t work in the modern setting. However, I think that if the campaign DLC gives use the amount of expansion that Halo 2 and 3 gave us, we might one day look back on this campaign in a better light. As it stands though, it should have been more than a Chief-Cortana story with top notch gameplay. Just my opinion of course.

Cheers Omar! As you say, the story really isn't up to snuff. It doesn't tie up the loose ends from 5 at all well and also doesn't really create anything new and engaging. Needs less story hidden away in audio logs, replaced instead by proper world building!

Bungie simply nailed feel and environmental variety. You rattled off the Halo 3 missions and each of them feels different and has a different color palette. That is what makes each mission feel distinct and gives each their "mission". The problem with Infinite is that it all seems the same. Every mission/area feels the same in Infinite.

343 definitely could've spiced up the open world with different biomes and made the excuse that the ring rebuilding itself has caused certain systems to malfunction, which would explain why there could be a desert, swamp, and snow area all next to eachother. The one biome we get is cool, but doesn't really do enough to keep it from getting stale.

The lack of unique level design really does cause boring multiple playthrough syndrome. It's banished interior, forerunner structure, and banished base on rocky forest terrain. Im not saying Halo couldn't work as an open world game but I dont think 343 properly executed it. The world just isn't as alive as it could be. It doesn't help that the entire open world is pretty much the same biome. The forerunner structures are a vast improvement over the design of previous games but still I find myself getting bored with the forerunner interior missions the most. Every other mission takes place in the dark ominous corridors of Zeta Halo. Maybe being outside is more interesting because of the increased freedom but its a slog to have to dive into yet another dark blue forerunner corridor. A vehicle section or a even air vehicle section inside would've been neat to help keep it more interesting. Also, the lack of ally characters leaves the game feeling empty. A character similar to Sgt Johnson or Buck leading the marines at Outpost Tremonious giving quips and one liners would help balance the optimist-pessimist dynamic between Weapon and Echo. The marines in the game are just kinda there and it's really weird to not have them be acknowledged with cutscenes or be in the story at all really.
@BenPlaysGames2 жыл бұрын
I find the repetitiveness a huge same in particular, because a lot of the forerunner structures and similar are designed well and work beautifully with the equipment you're given (of course, the grappling hook in particular). If 343 had managed to take that level design but varied environments and generally made it a bit more like traditional Halo, they could have been on to a real winner.

Nailed it with your description of the equipment selection controls, just ughhh. I used the hook exclusively due to this. The Endless are apparently just the same race as what'shername, Harbinger. So no, shoddy threat concept. Agreed, Cortama went from biggest threat in the galaxy with the damn Guardians under her control, to dead, forgiven, onto the new thing in the space of...? What exactly. Is it just me or are there like, hardly any actual missions in this game? You covered most of the game here, and I felt like after meeting The Harbinger and going to the first Spire directly after, the game just goes speedrun mode right to the ending, you are constantly right in front of your next objective, constantly on the imaginary clock of urgency after this point. I detest boss battles. Always have. Infinite seems to have them on every mission. The grenade situation is cumbersome. The added abilities almost as bad. The grapple shot is really fun and ended up my default setting for nearly the entire play through. The essence of Combat Evolved was SIMPLICITY. You had two weapons, two grenade types, and a melee attack. Once these basics were understood, mastering them came naturally. You can set the Endless up to be absolute badasses and bad news. But “worse than the flood” is a very bold claim to make, the Forerunners were forced to build galactic super weapons and wipe the galaxy free of all life just to starve the flood because they could not be stopped with conventional warfare, only slowed. So you cannot just drop the line “we both know there are worse things than the flood on this ring” without A: showing us what they are B: using gameplay to make us, the player, fear them more than the flood

Gameplay wise they are not perfect but lore wise and design wise they are AWESOME so are their weapons. I think 343 did amazing with Halo 4 and Im salty Halo 5 undid pretty much all of it)

This mission sucked all of the hype I could have had with a open world Halo game. I knew going in that the game does nothing to shake things up with level design and biomes. There needed to be different regions with digital biomes. As well as for the love of God a greater variety in things to do on Zeta Halo. It really feels tacked on despite being the premise. It should have got better from here but it never really does. All the cool biomes and wildlife were just in the trailers. It also really doesn't help that the interior locations are also copy and pasted. Enjoyment wise this campaign is the worst one in the series for me. It's always the same thing over and over again.

Nice videos, and yeah, the writing and dialogue at times makes me cringe and facepalm, Infinite at best is at best a barely decent Campaign that's so bland its forgettable pretty much, hopefully the DLC will be an improvement but I don't even expect much at this point

Cheers Eazion! That's my hope too dude, maybe the DLC will improve things. Not holding my breath though...

Real disappointed with everything in this campaign except for the grapple hook, art style, and classic halo tone… oh yeah and the single cam, no cut cinematic style wears out it’s welcome almost instantly.. there is just a total lack of stakes felt in the story

The open world is shit and like far cry. They shoulda done semi open world like destiny cuz too much action, missions, and story was sacrificed

I remember watching some KZbinrs who got to play the first six hours or so early saying "that it's definitely not like Far Cry" while the footage on screen showed a game that looked exactly like Far Cry 😂

I love the videos, but man, your gunplay and aim are so weird to watch, lol.

Haha in my defence, I'm a Diamond 6 on ranked, so I can definitely aim when I really try, promise!

Its not a great sign when I can't even make myself beat the game. Its just boring, I think I made more progress in Halo 5, which was also terrible(never beat either). I only played through Halo 4 three times as well, 2 times because a friend wanted to beat it on legendary & Legendary LASO. Its like watching the series go on a downward slope over the course of a decade.
