Hamburger Stroganoff - Struggle Food - The Hillbilly Kitchen. Hamburger Stroganoff is an inexpensive variation of classic Beef Stroganoff which is centuries old and has endless variations and possibilities. This rich creamy dish takes comfort food to a whole new level. It is simple, affordable and delicious. It's perfect for any weeknight dinner. You can make it with the ingredients that you already have on hand. No need for a shopping trip in a specialty food store. This is the kind of meal that I grew up on, and I raised my 4 kids on. No matter what your budget is, this is a meal that you and your family will enjoy again and again. Remember to put God first! :)

1 cup Chopped Onions
1 ½ cups water

We never really struggled but my mom made this very similarly when I was growing up, she cooked the ground beef and onions and garlic salt and pepper, drained it a bit, added some flour and cooked it a bit, then she added the juice from a can of mushrooms and milk and cream of mushtoom soup and finished it with sour cream. It was yummy over mashed potatoes with corn. The next day my dad had it over buttered toast for lunch. Good memories

Thank you Becky for sharing all these recipes and videos. Also talking about God! My Granny used to make a lot of these when I was growing up. She was a very religious woman and taught Sunday school. Pretty much Ditto.. except while my grandma was teaching me all these recipes (many of which I forgot until Becky reminded me), I was busy rebelling against her Christian efforts to save my soul. Unfortunately, I didn't really come to the Lord until many years after she had passed, but I know that the day I did, she threw a party in heaven! I am very thankful to her, and to this channel ❤🕊❤

Hello sweet lady, I'm not sure if I'm doing this right but I'll try. I found your channel on my Roku TV and I just wanted to tell you thank you for sharing your love of cooking and love of God. I am 78 yrs old. My husband took his life 4 years ago and left me in a wheelchair. I live alone now and have no family here in Texas. I get real lonely at times, then by chance I found your channel and although I don't cook much anymore because it's difficult cooking from a wheelchair and too easy to get burned. Your channel became a daily pleasure to look forward too every evening. Your words about your love of Jesus and His love for us have lifted me so many times when my heart was so heavy. Thank you. Though I don't do much cooking since being alone I still enjoy watching you cook. You have the sweetest voice and southern accent. I'm originally from Massachusetts and I have a heavy Boston accent. God bless you for making my day. I watch all the videos I can and watch them over and over. (Hugs) from Fort Worth Texas...... Marie

For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. Isaiah 41:13 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:18 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5 God is with you always. I am here and you are in my prayers. God Bless You, Sister!

I grew up with foods like this. Yum!! A friend introduced me to a recipe she makes with fresh green beans, tiny potatoes, and a cottage ham (1 to 2 pounds). She does it in the crock pot and shreds the cottage ham when it's all cooked. Simple and one of my favorite meals.

I've taught Sunday school for 35 years and Children's church for around 15 years now. I make this when I think about it, I dice onion very small and add mushrooms sometimes. It's delicious!

A favorite that you reminded me of. Mashed potatoes topped with green beans then topped with this. Very filling and good.

My husband loves it with mushrooms in it. Until I met him I had never eaten it that way, now I like it that way too. Your recipe is pretty much how I learned to cook it. It was delicious. I always enjoy your videos and love how you talk about our Lord.

I used to make something similar to this year's ago, for my daughter when she was young. We really liked it so I made it often. It was a recipe from a church cookbook I lost long ago. It was more complicated, with more ingredients, it was called hamburger gravey, and was suggested you serve over mashed potatoes, which is how I served it. I really like the simplicity of your recipe, easy to remember, no need for a recipe. Thank you!

Only found your videos recently. I wish I could eat at your table every day. My mom was from Missouri, grew up in the Depression and she made a lot of Depression Era dishes for our family, as well as country style meals. Your recipes take me back to my childhood days at my mom's table. Thanks for sharing.

This looks really easy and yummy. We're coming up on 38 years of marriage in June, and my gal pals and I agree with, and love the phrase "When I said I Do, I didn't think I'd have to decide what's for dinner, 365 days a year". My husband was a Teacher and Coach, so money saving recipes have always been necessary in our home. After a while, you can get in a rut of making a lot of things over and over ...so I am grateful I stumbled onto your vlog, because your recipes are easy and delicious. They make my husband happy, and that's the best thing:) Thank you for sharing again:)

The liquid released by the ground beef isn't fat, it's just water. Wait a few minutes and it will evaporate. Only when you hear the beef sizzling, it's fat.

I believe it’s fat because I pour it off into a can and let it sit till next day and throw it away. It turns whitest and turns into a solid. So it’s fat that I’m pouring off. Some store packaged meat has so much fat I have to pour it out of my cast iron just so it doesn’t overflow.

My Mom made this quite a lot when we were growing up. She did use onion, not bell peppers, and as a nod to the original beef stroganoff she added chopped dill pickles or dill relish, parsley (or celery leaves), and dried dill weed. 😋😋😋 She served it over rice, pasta or toast.

I love that you don’t use a ton of salt in your cooking. Others I have watched, use so much salt, that makes it look inedible.

We called it hamburger gravy too... no sour cream, no water, just the hamburger, a little flour, milk, salt and pepper. We spooned it over potatoes or noodles, or had it for breakfast spooned over homemade buttered biscuits. Sometimes, we would make the gravy without the beef, and add peas and canned tuna...so tasty over buttered toast. Good memories!
