Nice overview, thank you. I used OP back in 2019 but got rid of it (and the car) when the pandemic ended my commute a year later. I recently picked up a '21 Sonata Limited and ordered a 3X the same day. Two weeks later, I took it on a 2,000-mile road trip. It's so nice to be back in the saddle.

My wife couldn’t believe we were spending $1k on something so silly as the Comma 2 when we got it. She was not into the hype. A couple years later she will totally disqualify a vehicle in a purchase decision if it isn’t supported by Openpilot. Everyone who experiences Openpilot for themself as a driver understands. Unfortunately, it seems it takes that.

Thanks, Corbin. Getting C3 now after finding your endorsement. Been looking at it for a while now but felt like factory HDAS was sufficient. I solved "Hands on the wheel" nagging problem by attaching half-pound wrist exercise weight to the steering wheel. But during my last 800 miles trip from Boston to Quebec I discovered that HDAS (besides usual shortcomings of not reading half-visible lane markings) would often oversteer itself crossing inner line. And I wasn't even going above speed limit. It would start beeping at me as in "you are crossing the line!" but would not correct itself. I drive 200-300 miles a week on highways so hoping C3/Sunnypilot will make my life with Ioniq 5 even more fun.

That's awesome! I'm truly missing it in my Ioniq 6 since I've been driving that a lot more lately than my Ioniq 5. Apparently the SE trim with HDA 1.5 isn't supported yet (praying it does soon) so I can only use it in my Ioniq 5 SEL. Had I known this, I would have likely gone for an Ioniq 6 SEL just for SunnyPilot.

So I would assume that it’s either spoofing the HDA requirement of a torque input on the steering wheel or it is putting one in on what it knows to be the periodic basis that it’s requiring it. Makes me wonder if that’s what was happening when it was changing lanes on the highway. Nice review but honestly, I give a regular input for HDA based on my desire to be in a slightly different positions in the lane with surrounding traffic or potholes, etc. 12:37

HDA 2 can only be activated on 'highways' or similar classified roads (basically roads with no cross traffic) In the manual 7-109 it states: "The Highway Driving Assist is available only on controlled access road of certain highways. (except for the interchange/junction) 􀃃 Controlled access road indicates roads with limited entrances and exits that allow uninterrupted high speed traffic flow. Only passenger cars and motorcycles are allowed on controlled access roads. 􀅛􀀃 Additional highways may be expanded by future navigation updates." Here in Denmark (EU) the my22 IONIQ 5 only middle and upper trim had HDA 2 - the lowest just HDA Currently, you have to pay extra for HDA 2 (all trims)

I've heard of Comma for a while now and had many chances to get their products but didn't pull the trigger due to its price and other factors like if i trust it enough. I don't trust FSD at its current state like for example in Telsa cars. The Comma 3X looks great tho but it's still not 100% there yet for me. I still might get it but I just wish it was better intergrated with the car. It would be awesome if they could separate the cameras from the device. I would perfer just mounting the cameras on the top like the fitcamx. If a wire needs to go down to the ODB port then that's fine but I wish we could just use our own phone as the display. If not then fine provide a display that we could mount elsewhere like on the left side of the windshield. I currently have HDA2 on my EV6 GT and it's decent but could be better. LKA should only need ro rely on one marker and not two. It seems so 2010 and not so much tech of the 20s. Please do more videos and night time driving as well.

At 9:50, the comma's hesitation to complete the lane change might have been because the white car from the adjacent lane was quickly approaching on the left. This theory hinges on the fact that comma uses the blind spot proximity sensor for making lane changes.

Did you ever try the experimental features? I have a new Ioniq 5 SEL with HDA2 and got a Comma 3x. Both SunnyPilot and Open Pilot (Master vs stock) seem to work well for basic lane centering, etc. but I cant get speed sign recognition or stop light/stop sign recognition to work in experimental mode at all which is disappointing. SunnyPilot wants to make intersection turns when navigating but wont slow down for stop signs etc so I have to cancel and intervene at each intersection which defeats the point. OP says it can do this but I dont see anyone on the Discord community saying how its supposed to work. If you happen to figure it out please make a video (for all Hyundai HDA2 users!) Thanks.

Thanks to your presentation, we've got a Comma 3x. Just received it, so no experience yet. Did my first highway drive yesterday (IONIQ5 as from April 12th) and it's overall a great experience. But I can't see why automated speed adjustment would be limited to the highway where speed is almost always 120, while on secondary roads it varies all the time between 30 (school environment), 50 (city env), 70 or 90 km/h. Also, why not stop/start for red/green light? I hope the comma 3X delivers more if those features handsfree ...

I do not like that the company basically has no support - no chat/phone - espically on pre-sales questions. You have to have an order id and a dongle id number in order to process any questions. Looks nice - 1250 plus 200 for the cable is a bit much to sink into a product when some of the features are already supported in the product. And with limited ways of contacting them it feels like I will have the same issue when the Comma 3 has its first issues. Plus - the nag screens for touching the steering wheels are required by law - that is one of the big complaints about Tesla FSD - that the camera cand steering wheel sensors can be easily tricked.

The OBD2 cable is only needed for fingerprinting the car during initial setup and for keeping the c3x powered for a period of time after turning off the car. If you remove the OBD2 cable, it will still work with power from the camera harness, but it will need to do a full reboot every time you turn the car on, and it won't be online to upload videos and such once you turn the car off.

Blindspot monitoring can prevent/delay lane changes, but this all boils down to software and driver customizations. If you as a driver allow the system to ignore them, it will make in safe lane changes. On the other end, you can block lane changes too.

So I love playing around with tech, but not letting it drive my car. With self-driving, these systems appear "safe" until that small percentage where they are not. Objectively speaking, having a hand on your steering wheel is more safe, and there are good reasons why OEM systems are built to be more conservative than open source software. Before trusting one of these, I would stop and pause and think that you are not only taking on risk for yourself, but also for others on the road around you that haven't decided to agree to drive near open-source nightly developer builds of software.
@Cory182
@Cory182 3 ай бұрын
This is not really self-driving. It's just a more advanced version of the level 2 driver assistance features built-in to the car. The driver is still 100% responsible for the car's movements. The built-in features require frequent steering input because that's how it can confirm you're still there and paying attention. The c3x just does that with a driver-facing camera and an AI model that tells it what the driver is doing and where they're looking. With the additional information, it should be considered MORE safe.
@Methanoskttr
@Methanoskttr 2 ай бұрын
Driving is a risk in general even if you consider yourself a "great" driver. Being "too" careful can be even more dangerous to others. That said, these systems are not a replacement at all for the driver. This is the primary thing I think most drivers with these features don't understand and the WHY that could lead to elevated danger. Being careless and not paying attention could very well lead to easily avoidable accidents.

Does the comma 3x make noise before disengaging? In my Tucson, there is no tone when lane keeping is about to disengage. There is a tone when you've changed gears via the paddle shifters the system is about to return to 'D', which is annoying. Seems like the Hyundai engineers put the tone on the wrong state change. It's a safety issue really.

@@scootercrosskingit sucks that it has to rely on two markers to keep you centered. Why can't it just use one marker cause that would be enough info imo. As you know and seen in this video not roads have two markers. Around my area lanes that are against the curbs don't have a line painted so lane keep assist is useless most of the time. I remembered my 20 Accord being able to keep its lane on those streets but you had to be above 40mph or so for it to engage.

Pass. This seems like a lot of money to spend-and risk to take- just to not have to keep your hands on the wheel. Regardless of how well the system appears to do in brief and limited testing, we know it’s the unpredictable edge cases that pose the real challenge to any ADAS. Who is liable if it makes a mistake resulting in injury or death? Some startup whose device runs open source software? The manufacturer of the car you modified? Nope, you’re on your own. When an automaker has enough confidence to buy Comma or at least license their tech and put it into its vehicles, that’s the time to take it seriously. Until then, it’s a big roll of the dice for a modicum of extra convenience.
