I remember even as a kid, when I didn't know what an MLM was, I would see those booths at craft fairs and think "Those aren't crafts, why are they here?!"
@-_-0.0-_-
@-_-0.0-_- Жыл бұрын
You can always clock them a mile away: every other booth is hand painted, glass, soaps, handmade jewelry, etc....and then there's a booth full of plastic bags or professional boxes full of a product, or even something like MLM jewelry that is obviously churned out of a machine with professional signage. Really kills the vibe of the unique, handmade aspect of craft fairs!

My local county fair used to be SO MUCH FUN because of all of the unique arts and crafts you'd find there, but in recent years it's been overrun by freaking solar companies and people selling windows and mattresses and artificial turf. 🙄

I once went to a craft fair that had an entrance fee. We went in and most booths were MLMs so we demanded that we get our entrance fees back. I don't mind paying an entrance fee for a really good craft fair especially if it means the crafters have cheaper booth fees. I am not paying to deal with huns though!

Omg that's a whole other level of messed up! The sad thing is, I doubt the makers got a cheaper booth fee because of the entrance fee. If anything, they usually charge more at those type of events because "that way you know there's only serious shoppers and no looky lous"

The one about the packages reminded me of how I worked at a cosmetics packaging warehouse, filling, labeling and boxing cosmetics. Without exaggeration, at least 80% of what I packaged was MLM of some sort, young living, Ronan and Fields, Nu Skin, Arbonne, Beauty counter, Younique and probably more I can't name off the top of my head. It was crazy we packaged thousands upon thousands of that sort of stuff every day. It was never enough for a story since, but it always made me think about how much was actually being bought and sold that we needed to package that much and how much was just going to waste.

that just makes me think how dangerous it would be if their family declined relevant exams/testing because they thought the oils were protecting them. my aunt had genetic breast cancer, and her mother was diagnosed within two years. because she knew they had the same genetic marker, she was able to catch it early and they're both healthy today. so disgusting and dangerous.

I went to college far away from home. On Labor Day weekend, I'd be virtually alone because most people lived close or were taking a vacation. My friend felt badly for me and invited me to her house. She made it clear that we'd be eating every meal out and there would be no food or eating in the home. Her parents were on Optavia and didn't want any food around to tempt them. Two things I remember from that time: 1. Her parents seemed to be short-tempered and almost hostile. Now I think they were just hangry. 2. She had a younger brother who was a Senior at Duluth High School. When I first met him he was obese bordering on morbidly obese. My friend told me that he had gain a lot of weight while his parents were dieting. If you tell a teenage boy he'd eat all of his meals out, good chance he's not eating super healthy food. Anyway her parents lasted about six months on the diet. They ended the diet before Thanksgiving. By MLK Day (I went to stay the weekend with her again), they'd apparently gained all the weight back and maybe more. What was sad is the son who was overweight when they started became morbidly obese. It took him several years to lose the weight. He lost the weight not by a fad diet but by using a nutritionist and going to a gym.

S2 made me cringe partly because I've been the "shower drain face" teen, and my goodness, if anything said it was the "acne be gone" type of thing, she would buy to use on me, even after the first handful didn't work and with me, relatives and doctors saying "it's not a concerning problem, it's a puberty problem". I didn't even think about it much, always knew they were normal, but later on I started parroting what she said about my skin and thinking it mae me ugly because of the goddanm fixation. After they started only coming around my periods years after that fixation stopped that she went "look, your face is so much cleaner" and I went "it's because I'm not 13 anymore, mom". Acne is not pretty but c'mon, it's not necropse either. S4 with S2 and others from before made me wonder what's with parents becoming obcessed with their pubercent children's "good looks". I mean, do adults get amnesia after they become parents? Everyone is kinda weird looking in their early/mid teens, those who aren't are exception, not rule, so why so much fixation. I know it often comes from fear of bullying, but... *everyone* is kinda weird looking during puberty, so insecurity makes the easy target more often than the odd thing itself, so why put it in their heads?

Every year my friends and I put on a holiday a craft bazaar and we have a very strict no MLM policy. We've had to update our language to include "network marketing" and the other "we're not an MLM, we're a _______" attempts to sidestep these bans. We have been duped before, but nope, not again.

I’m a small business and attend markets. Most of the markets I have done the contracts say no MLM or direct sales companies. Butttt recently I did a market that did allow MLMs. I was surprised but it didn’t seem to hinder my sales.

Possible motives of the incidents mentioned in story 6: Grooming and/or “Pester Power” (AKA “The Nag Factor”). Or perhaps desperation to reach some Cold Call Quota on that Bingo card.

It may not be that theyre saying that cancer is contagious, as someone who had a parent with cancer, everyone in the family is scared of getting cancer and the affected person fears for their family as well. They may just be using that fear to capitalize on how scared everyone was to “prevent them from getting it too”

Regarding the first story about the oils stopping the family from getting cancer, maybe they were saying if they took the oils, it would stop them from getting any cancer in the future.

I agree that you have a voice that doesn’t stress a person out and could probably help with sleep. My kids watch KZbin videos and some of them are always yelling or screeching. It’s awful. And then sometimes there are youtubers that have very fake sounding voices. I can’t handle that either. Your voice is good because you aren’t trying to change her voice and you aren’t yelling. So keep up the good voice work! KZbin needs it.

My first year doing craft fairs was spent finding the best ones to do where they were juried with only handmade items. I went to 9ne last year for winter that was terrible I barely made back the fee which was expensive. Was sat in front of an mlm so they scared off all my customers. I was soo mad I was also sat next to another candlemaker which hurt my sales even more. I now know that the event organizer is an oil hun and know to avoid it like the plague.

With the psych hospital essential oil thing, and the high school band Origami Owl thing, I wonder if these are huns who are just in so deep with the brainwash and the urge to be a product of the product, that they just genuinely think this is the best thing they have to offer to people going through a hard time?

I think the two I seen for the most part are Mary Kay ( very pink boxes with the name) and Pamper Chef ( has the logo high comes in different color)... and it is like a lot of them I think I can easily see 30 in one truck.

The last story can go either way. I know that aroma therapy is used in psych hospitals to introduce a coping skill/tactics (used with meditation and yoga). Unless an employee was doing things under the table, there is no way to take patient info without the risk of violating HIPAA. Might’ve been a pushy activities therapist. It should not be used to treat “ailments” or their symptoms but more so a grounding technique. But who knows what people are up to these days

That story with "Tasha" reminds me of how my mom and I received an invitation from a former neighbor of hers, asking us to join her for a quaint gathering with a few girlfriends to have some tea and catch up... 😏 There was a major accident on the freeway and after sitting in nearly two hours of bumper to bumper traffic, we arrive to find the house jam packed with women and MLM displays all throughout the living room and even poolside! LuLaRoe, jewelry, vitamins, essential oils, diet drinks, you name it. My mom is on a fixed income and doesn't have much by way of disposable income, but she was being massively pressured to buy a top that was like $40-something. She repeatedly refused and after awhile we were genuinely PISSED when we realized what this was really all about. A couple other women were disgusted as well and we just left after about a half hour.

I dated someone who's mother used the herbalife stuff. I don't know why she was taking it, all i remember was her husband had died and she took to her bed and never got back up until she went to the hospital and died. I remember hearing that she had bags of the herbalife stuff. I had no idea it was an MLM as far as i know she didn't sell it.

My local craft fair has completely taken over our middle school for 40 years. The last ~15 years or so have seen MLM booths in increasing numbers every year. This past year a new teacher took over the fair and the MLM numbers were at least half of what they were in 2023. Idk if it was intentional on her part or if the number of huns has decreased in our area but damn it sure was nice to actually see CRAFTS when you walked into a classroom instead of shitty wax melts or Tupperware. Don't get me wrong, they were there. Just not nearly as many. And there was only 1 Scentsy rep but probably half a dozen with handmade candles and stuff so I'll call it a win

Story 3 - I wonder if MLM awareness has resulted in a significant decrease in people signing up to sell, but maybe not as strong of a shift in BUYING from these companies? I feel like everyone and their mother now knows you lose money & practically sell your soul when signing up with an MLM… but maybe that awareness doesn’t extend to why you shouldn’t purchase from MLM’s? Morally, people may fail to understand that just because they’re not selling for an MLM, buying from MLM’s still supports the scheme, even if you’re not directly partaking in it.

I saw a bumper sticker on a car window a couple of days ago that was advertising Mary Kay, and my immediate thought was, "That woman is going to regret putting a sticker advertising a pyramid scheme on her car window in a couple of months." That's what I immediately thought of during that story of the person for the shipping company thinking no one's really falling for it anymore.

Not really a horror story, but my partner's twin went to a Mother's Day event at her church and a lady was giving out Mary Kay gift bags full of personal care items. I ended up with a foot mask, foot scrub, shave/shower gel, pumice stone, and two lip balms. It was all full sized products in branded gift bags, so I can't even imagine how much she spent on all this. 😬

The last story. I was in a psych hospital a few times as a teenager and twice as an adult for ptsd and PPD. We also had a yoga "class" for the teens, it was a 30 min class but for the first 15 min it was "yoga" (I was in dance at the time and it was pretty much just stretches you usually do before a workout. And the last 15 we sat and talked about oils and their benefits. She'd pass around little roller sample size oils and then asked us what our "ailments" were and she'd give us a specific oil and told us to rub it in real good and smell it as if we were meditating for it to work properly. Afterwards on our third class she gave us a paper that had essential oils and what they work for. It was a random website print out lol
