Sonny Liston - Was an American professional boxer who competed from 1953 to 1970. A dominant contender of his era, he became the world Heavyweight champion in 1962 after knocking out Floyd Patterson in the first round, repeating the knockout the following year in defense of the title; in the latter fight he also became the inaugural WBC Heavyweight champion. Often regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Liston was particularly known for his immense strength, formidable jab, long reach, toughness, and is widely regarded as the most intimidating man in the history of combat sports. Although Liston was widely regarded as unbeatable, he lost the title in 1964 to Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay), who entered as an 8:1 underdog. Liston retired in his corner due to an inflamed shoulder. The Ring magazine ranks Liston as the tenth greatest Heavyweight of all time, while boxing writer Herb Goldman ranked him second and Richard O'Brien, Senior Editor of Sports Illustrated, placed him third. Liston was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.

The best thing about Sonny Liston was that he had more than solid fundamentals, he could've survived based on his power alone but he took the time to sharpen his craft. His coordination was also underrated for a man of his size

Liston's jab was really long and brutally concussive. You rarely see a jab land with such force. I am sure that after tasting Liston's jab his opponents got immediate anxiety about how hard Liston's power punches would feel. Once his jab started landing it would not take long for them to find out first hand.

The things that surprised me, when I finally took the time to read and learn about Liston, are how well he slipped punches as well as his insanely solid fundamental boxing skills. My Top 10 Hardest Punchers 1. Earnie Shavers - Labeled by boxing experts and boxers to be the hardest puncher of all time. Muhammad Ali who faced Liston, Foreman, Lyle, Frazier, and had a brief sparring with Marciano stated that Shavers hit the hardest among them. Holmes and Norton also agree that Shavers hits harder than anybody including Foreman, Tyson, and Lyle. 2. Sonny Liston - The greatest slugger to have ever stepped in the ring. He is also known to possess the largest hands in boxing history. He is also the boxer with the hardest jab. His jab is capable of knocking out his foes and majority said that his jab was sinilar to a telephone pole. Ali, Wepner and other boxers who him stated that he hit harder than Foreman. He also has one of the hardest left hooks and right overhands im the history of boxing. Foreman said that he was forced to go on defensive in one of their sparring matches, considering that Liston was older than him that time. One of the most intimidating boxers past their prime. He is best known for knocking Floyd Patterson out. 3. George Foreman - One of the scariest monsters in boxing history due to his size, durability and insane punching power. He is known for beating Frazier, Norton, and Moorer. He is also known for his brilliant slugfest with Lyle in which he won and his fight with Ali, Morrison, and Holyfield. He is the oldest boxer to have ever win in a boxing championship. According to Holyfield; Old George Foreman hit him harder than any of the opponents he's ever faced which includes: Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Buster Douglas, and Riddick Bowe. In his fight with the undefeated Joe Frazier that beat Ali, he caused an upset when he defeated Frazier by stoppage after knocking him down several times. Ken Norton a notable boxer puncher known for beating Ali, also got brutally knocked out by Foreman in the second round. 4. Rocky Marciano - The greatest swarmer of all time and the only undefeated fighter in this list. With formidable punching power, insane stamina, and granite chin, he is known for beating legendary boxers; Joe Louis (though he was past his prime), Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles, and more. He is best known for one of the most devastating punches ever thrown, which is his right cross to Walcott. He is also the only boxing champion in this list to have never been knocked out. Despite having the smallest arms in the heavyweight division and being one of the shortest boxers, he was able to knock most of his opponents out. 5. Max Baer - probably the hardest puncher in his era. This guy killed some boxers in the ring, that is a testament of his punching power. It took someone like Joe Louis to beat him up, but he was already way past his prime that time and he had an injury that affected his performance in the ring that time. 6. Ron Lyle - A hard puncher, a tough slugger, and a crowd pleaser, Lyle is one of the greatest boxers who has never won any championship. He is best remembered for his slugfest with Foreman. Even though Lyle lost to Foreman he is the only boxer who has ever knocked Foreman down twice and not because of exhaustion but because of his punching power. He also outslugged Earnie Shavers, who is considered to be the hardest puncher of all time. He was also notable for breaking Ali's nose in their fight even though he lost. One of the hardest punchers ever as stated by George Foreman. 7. Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko - The latest hardest punchers in the history of boxing. According to Freddie Roach, Wladimir's hands are heavier than Mike Tyson and he actually hits slightly harder than him. Vitali on the other hand has a sharper punch than Foreman (though Foreman is already old and definitely way past his prime) according to Shannon Briggs. They would lose to other boxers in this list except for Shavers, since boxers back then have more durable chin and harder punching power. 8. Mike Tyson - With incredible speed, power, and reflexes: Tyson is definitely one of the greatest boxers and heavy hitters of all time, especially in his prime years under Cus and Rooney. Even though he became a shadow of his own self later on (He lost his great reflex and discipline because of Don King) he was still a formidable puncher and the most intimidating boxer of all time. Whether it's a Left Hook, Gazelle Punch, Right Uppercut, or a Right Cross that hits you, you'll be down for the count. He can hit hard from both angles.9. Lennox Lewis - One of the most complete boxers of all time. A renowned boxer puncher known for his boxing iq and punching power. He also defeated boxers like Holyfield, Vitali Klitschko, Tua, and Mike Tyson (though Tyson was way past his prime). He is easily one of the greatest hevayweight fighters of all time. His long arms and accurate punches are the reason for his powerful punches. 10. Joe Louis - The greatest boxer of all time as labelled by boxing experts, no offense to Ali. His punching power comes from his accurate, precise, and flawless punching style. One of the earliest boxer-punchers, his talent was ahead of his own time. Whether it's a jab, a hook or a cross, you don't want to get hit. In his prime, he was a force to be reckoned with and only Schmelling was able to beat him in his younger years. Louis later avenged his defeat by knocking out Scmelling in the first round in their rematch. This "Black Bomber" is considered to be a hero of the United States. Honorable Mentions 1. David Tua - a hard puncher, but known only for his left hook. His other punches are impressive, but not as impressive as the top 10. 2. Joe Frazier - same as David Tua. Also a one armed cannon. He had the best left hook in history 3. Gerry Cooney - Another one armed cannon. It's all left hook or nothing. 4. Deontay Wilder - he needs to beat relevant opponents which possess great chin. It's way too early to rank him. 5. Julian Jackson - I didn't include him, since boxers from the heavyweight division punch harder. 6. Roberto Duran - same reason as Julian Jackson. 7. Hasim Rahman - a powerful puncher indeed, but the top 10 contenders in this list have knocked more relevant people. 8. Sam Langford - He is definitely one of the hardest punchers out there, but I didn't include him because he is smaller and lighter than these heavyweights. 9. Jack Dempsey - I'll definitely place him in the top 10, but my gut tells me his punching power is inferior to the people in the list. 10. Anthony Joshua - same reason as Deontay Wilder. 11. Cleveland Williams - I'm not yet sure about him. 12. Tommy Morrison - He hits hard, but not hard enough to be ranked alongside these ten fughters.

@@johnd.597 Hyperbolic and Tyson fanboy logic. Liston wasn’t even much of a partier or drug user, that’s just narrative games. He just happened to be pretty old once he finally got his just due. Ali never had a true prime , but in his best years he’s a hard fight for Liston due to his ability to counter the jab, measure the distance and circle away from punishment with his foot speed. Prime Joe Louis is also a hard fight for Liston because of his ability to parry and counter the jab, and get inside/cut off the ring. The whole “ X beats every other opponent” is just bad analyses. Styles make fights. A pure boxer stylist would give Liston problems. Defensive Eddie Machen went the distance with prime Sonny.

Zidane ZZ Your talking about Lennox Lewis or Wladimir Klitchko. If wilder got better technically and I mean a lot better he would be similar to them. But boxing is not all about boxing ability. Wilder has a tremendous ability to land his right hand and seperate other boxers from their senses. It don't matter if he can be outboxed because as long as he is still in the fight he always has that right hand and he has a great ability to measure you and study you while even being outboxed maybe but his just waiting for that one moment to land the right hand. Now that may or may not work againts some people but so far he has been very effective with it.

It was a great performance but Liston was well past his prime. His movements were slower and more stiff. He claimed to be 32 years old at the time of the bout, but many believed that his true age was closer to 40, perhaps even older.[5] Liston had been suffering from bursitis in his shoulders for close to a year and had been receiving cortisone shots. In training for the Clay fight, he re-injured his left shoulder and was supposedly in pain striking the heavy bag. He secretly resorted to heavy icing and ultrasound therapy after each training session.

Yes, his upper-body movement was first-rate, and most welters in history would have lost to Griffith; there's no shame in that. Four of his fights are on KZbin ( kzbin.info/aero/PL-fvD9jAmwXcXJqaLmH2x-9fTY7sXh6hL ) Certainly you've produced defense highlights for far less sophisticated fighters than Stable. too many people have misconceptions when it comes to ability. Sonny grew up on a sharecropping farm with a horribly abusive father who made him plow fields, dig, thrash pecans and other farm work from the day young sonny could walk. All that work for consecutive years will undoubtedly build immense strength, particularly in the shoulders, back, forearms and hands. Once he was grown and started boxing, he started doing calisthenics and other boxing workouts which strengthened him further and weighing 218 and doing dips, pull ups, push ups, etc while already strong and you get this monster. In short, it's not genetics or a miracle, just hard work for a long time...the reach on the other hand is natural.
@Chill-qw1bx
@Chill-qw1bx 7 жыл бұрын
and if you look at past HW KO artists (Earnie Shavers, Joe Frazier, Jack Dempsey) They have similar backgrounds where they grow up doing grown mans work that builds immense strength so by the time they hit 18 they're beasts.

Liston, my favorite boxer, I have his biography, its sad that he had such a troubled life, by the time he met Ali (then Clay) he was well past his prime but unfortunately thats when most people remember his start from. Its fun to talk about "dream fights", my answer for these especially when big punchers are involved is whoever gets in the first good punch will probably win, kind of a copout but oh well lol. I had a nice amateur career and if I can brag a little I was 42 - 0 but quit while I was ahead. Who was the biggest puncher of all time? Man thats a really tough one since it depends on who hits you cleanly, what kind of day they're having and there's different kinds of hard punchers (compare for example Tyson and Foreman) Liston was definitely in the running, and Joe Louis overhand right was devastating, honorable mention was the late Teofilio Stevenson's overhand right, man what a pro he would have been! Ok time for work, all the best everyone!
