As a former owner of 3 subies ( 01 2.5rs coupe, 05 impreza rs, and a '11 wrx), these cars are phenomenal when stock and something that is very overlooked. While your gonna get gapped in straight line, on the corners these cars are amazing. In my recommendation before you do any kind of power mods, build your suspension. Coilovers, sway bars and strut bars to get some general stiffness in the chassis and just takes down some curvy back roads and I guarantee you will have more fun then just goosing it in a straight line.
@SI0AX

That is the best way to go about it, but it's not as exciting to skill-less people who just wanna roll race. Countless people running 500+ WHP on stock brakes and suspension, lol. (I was one of those guys... ended up destroying the car...)

I disagree, the stock tune is pretty meh and you can get a full 3'exhaust for a decent price, especially if second hand. Have that and a tune, easy power gains, easy fun gains.

Agreed. Kept my 2018 mostly stock engine wise, at 110k miles right now and no problems. Like you said they’re the most fun in curvy and winding roads. Only the brainless ego heads care about going fast in a straight line. Edit: I do have a stage 1 tune to get rid of the shitty stock tune and open up the power thru the rpms cause the stock tune sucks with the rev hang and power dies off around like 4500-5000rpms

MrSubaru has a great video all about the head gasket issues if anyone wants to know more. Basically, the turbo engines don't generally have head gasket issues, especially when left stock. The head gasket issue was with the naturally aspirated 2.5L engines. It was primarily due to a rubberized coating used in conjunction with the open deck block. Don't get me wrong, a WRX can still blow a head gasket just like any car, but typically only if someone has caused it to overheat through other part failures or neglect.

I owned an 04 rx EJ20, and thrashed that thing like my life depended on it and for the two years of ownership and the 50'000ks I put on, with daily the car it never gave me any issues engine wise, I thin we did a radiator when we first bought it to fix an existing water leak and thats it. Now this is all facts. I got my 15 WRX knowing it would require special treatment, and I’ve had absolutely no problems at all. Only thing I need to disagree on is the Rally Armor Mudflaps haha. I’m definitely not rallying it, it spends almost all its time on pavement, but I just love the way it looks and it helps with paint chips if I’m on a dirt rd. Do one of these videos on a e36 or e46. Personally I feel that these cars are good platforms but people just ether don’t get that they are challenging to work on or don’t want to fork up money to properly fix them. I have a e46 wagon that I put up on jackstands for a week to reseal the engine. My bmw doesn’t leak and cause I did it myself I only spent 1500 to reseal the whole engine and change all the hoses. I did a bit more but I’m not trying to get into every I did. But I never modified my car for power I just did OEM+ work and I can drive it cross country with out missing a beat. Thank you for this. So, so true about doing your research when looking into buying any Subaru for that matter. I wanted to get a Legacy GT as my first Subie and went to a local shop whose actual sign in front reads “Those Subaru Guys” for advice. They told me to stay away from the turbo LGT, they’ve seen too many blown turbos go through their shop, waste of money. So I got an na version. Then I dug deep into the Internet forums and found the most common problem on the Legacy GT turbo was from a simple banjo bolt. Knowledge is power, and with the right info from good sources a Subaru will go a long way giving you a fun drive!

Everything so accurate, I had to subscribe. Good stuff, man. To own a Subaru, you gotta be a Subaru person. Otherwise? You’re gonna have a bad time. Quote for my timing belt was $1,195, last year around this time. Learned to do it all myself, then immediately tested it with a 4500-mile 7-day road trip from Kansas to California and back, through various mountain ranges. It has been superrrr reliable so far. Just need to give it lots of maintenance - always check oil + coolant, service every 5,000km and don't spare any expenses. Let me tell you from experience... everything this man has said in the 240sx and this video is my life experience with a 1991 Honda CRX SI... I purchased it in 2019, It has yet to leave my garage... I had to pull the engine and strip it down to the bare block 2 times and rebuild it. Had to take transmission apart and rebuild it with new parts. Had to take the entire suspension apart and rebuild it(100% fully rebuild). Had to cut and weld rusted chassis stuff. Had to pull out 70% of the wiring and route new wires. Had to take apart the entire brake system(minus hard lines) and replace with new parts. New clutch and flywheel had to be resurfaced. All rubber lines around the car had to be replaced. Most connectors had to be re-pinned. The entire fuel system had to be replaced (fuel pump, injectors, lines, filters etc.) I had to straighten parts of the chassis with frame and accident damage tools. Had to flash a base tune and remap the fueling. Had to replace the distributor and entire ignition system including starter. Entire Cooling system had to be replaced along with radiator, pump, thermostat, all hoses, even the cooling fans and new fan relays etc. Had to replace wheels and tires. I bought the car for $1,000 and have put more than $15,000 in repairs and mods(because OEM is basically impossible and official high quality brand mod parts are cheaper). I don't even remember what else I'm forgetting to mention. A lot of rust repair, scraping, sanding, painting etc.

I ran a performance shop that focused on Subaru for 5 years. I personally own and race a 1000hp STi, and previously had multiple Rally X imprezas. The headgasket issue was never a thing. The only annoying failures were really bearing failures. I used to daily drive a STi that made 785whp on E85. It had 0 headgasket issues. I actually saw more failures where the cylinder liners split on the EJ257 when someone would make big power without going to a closed deck like IAG or Outfront. ARP 625, 11mm, and 1/2" headstuds paired with quality mls headgaskets or even fire ring headgaskets make the HG failures a thing of the past.

Great video overall! I will say I don't think Subarus are nearly as finicky as most people think, but that's primarily because most people only know about them through internet memes and have never actually worked on one. Speaking of that, one of the reasons most people work on their own Subarus is it's actually one of the easiest brands to work on period. Every mechanic I know who works on them regularly agrees with me as well. I would prefer to work on a Subaru then almost anything with a transverse engine. The logical layout of everything just makes them make sense and I generally enjoy working on a Subaru even if they of course have some quirks like every brand! Thank you for telling people you don't have to lift the engine to do spark plugs. Holy shit the internet is stupid sometimes.

Thank you for making this! Subaru's are so incredibly misunderstood it's insane. Another contributing factor to the head gasket issue ( even though its not the issue everyone thinks it is) is if the engine has ever been over heated. The EJ doesn't like getting super hot. It's not an iron block and shit will warp and move around if it gets too warm.

I got my first car a few years ago, an 05 WRX. She's my baby, but she hasn't been easy to care for. I replaced the engine 13,000 miles into owning the car because cyl 1 lost compression. The paint is peeling off of the driver side rear, and the transmission either sounds like it's grinding gravel or it has straight cut gears every time I let off the accelerator. I can't maintain 16 IAM and every now and then my afr stays at 14.x under full boost. But she handles so nice and when she wants to run right it's the best feeling. I just put all new AC in her (TX) and life is good. Hopefully she'll be 100% in a couple years and then I can get into making her faster.

The head gasket failure mainly effected vehicles before 09 if I remember correctly. As well as only effecting N/A 2.5 engines. Yes, head gaskets fail on turbos as well but the failure Subaru saw was due to the carbon gaskets being used on the N/A motors before switching over to turbo engine/mls gaskets in the N/A engines. The most common thing I've seen especially with the GD chassis is the turbo drains absolutely pissing due to either age or people who don't drive their vehicle often and the hose dries up. As well as the turbo seals going out due to age so they smoke like a forest fire out of the exhaust.

In nice weather, most of the power at the rear so 40/60 front, the car doesn't understeer any where near as much, it feels like the car screws round corners, in rain pull the dccd one notch foward and its still good to drive hard, just remember with the car it has one way diffs so if cornering always be on throttle so the diffs are active if not you will likely slide in rain let alone ice or snow, yes i have had the car slide unexpectedly however that was because of diesel on the Road with the dccd all the way at the rear whilst hammering it onto a roundabout, it did grip and no damage occurred as there was no one close to the car at the time
