When you guessed Scorbunny, I was thinking “That can’t be Scorbunny, that’s not the cry it makes.” But then I realized that it IS Scorbunny, but it’s not it’s main cry, it’s its happy cry it makes at the camp site. I went to the site and found out that Scorbunny is not the only Pokémon that they did this too. This makes guessing generation eight Pokémon even harder than the others.

It was fun to play this game along with the video. As someone who has memorized all the starters through Gen 6, I got very offended by the failure to immediately recognize Typhlosion, Chikorita, Turtwig, and Dewott as well as mistaking something else for Quilladin. Doubly so for Turtwig because I'm an avid Shellos fan.

Starting in gen 4 the cries became way more dynamic and onward they incorporated actual sound effects making them a lot easier to identify especially when you have options

So here's my funniest story about a "Name the Pokemon cry" quiz. Back around 2009 or so, I found a cry quiz online and decided to give it a shot. This quiz was any Pokemon up to Gen 4, not just one specific Gen. Now bear in mind that at that point, I knew what all the Gen 3 & 4 Pokemon were but had never played a Gen 3 or 4 game so I was unfamiliar with any of their cries. So as I'm playing through, I got to this one cry that literally sounded like a metal plate. I even specifically remember thinking as soon as I heard it "That sounds like a metal plate. What Pokemon looks like a metal plate??" And then I thought, "Maybe...Bronzor?" And yup! Got it on the first try without ever playing a Gen 4 game and knowing what the cries were. And keep in mind that this wasn't multiple choice or had any pictures of possible answers. It was strictly an audio quiz where you had to guess based on the cry alone.

Gens 2 and 4 are my jam. Gold and Silver remain my favourite games and I skipped Ruby and Sapphire, so I don't know many of the Hoenn mons at all. FireRed and LeafGreen brought me back and then I returned to my obsession in the Sinnoh games, so I know those ones really well. Everything newer, ehhhh... Had fun playing alongside you!

I did something similar where I was doing literal Guess the Pokémon based on the silhouette and I had to spell the Pokémon’s name correctly. If I knew the Pokémon but not how to spell it, I had to cheat and use my handbook to get spellings if I didn’t know them. I haven’t even played Sun and Moon I just write a lot of Alola-based Fanfics. I also did this exact game and kept trying Gen eight until I got them all.

To be fair the Ultra Beasts + Alola Ultra Beast related Legendaries (Necrozma, Lunala, Solgaleo) have very recognisable cries, because at the end of their cries you can hear a sound in the background that sounds like a high-tech buzz or zoom.
