This whole idea of heavy is interesting to me because it really can be interpreted in a bunch of ways. You could argue a serious lack of deathcore in this list where the vocals are as much apart of the "heaviness" as the riffs. Crowbar if heavy technically and instrumentally but there are definitely a lot of deathcore bands who *sound* way heavier and louder. You can argue that's part of what makes something heavy.

Sure, Sabbath walked so all the other bands on this list could run, no argument there - But you can't just ignore the huge influence Meshuggah have had on modern metal. I mean, they're pretty much solely responsible for spawning djent as a whole, and djent's whole thing is just trying to be as heavy as possible. But that's besides the point, because if we're really being scientific, there's absolutely no way "War Pigs" is heavier than songs like "Rational Gaze," "Organic Shadows" etc. There's just no way lol.

I think the main issue here is heaviness as a feeling vs heaviness as a sound. Sabbath self-titled song records hold up to this day because it FEELS heavy. Meshuggah has a heavy feeling too, but if a heavy feeling means it still holds up after the advent of Meshuggah, I think that’s evidence of transcendent heaviness. It’s like this… do you think Earth is heavy? They’re not the most intense band, but their music just plunges so deep with its feeling. They don’t even need distortion… the feeling is there. But if it’s all about sound, then yeah the more extreme bands are gonna win every time. In that mentality, I genuinely believe no band will ever surpass Primitive Man.
