I lived *right next door* to Kaya's when I was a kid in the 70s. I remember "Made In Occupied Japan" tea cups my mom would buy, they had a whole "dry goods" (sewing stuff) department, hardware department, a full-on butcher shop where they ground fresh hamburger every day even more than once a day, etc. And apparently according to the sign out front, they rented out something called a "Merry Tiller" which we kids found kind of humorous. Showed a 1950s type housewife running a soil-tilling machine.

They used to sell WWII-era "Go For Broke" school notebooks etc., my beloved Diamond Head Chocolate Flavored Drink in bottles, etc. Good times. One time I had made a kite and was flying it in the big field next to the store, and it was kind of hard to control and it zoomed downward and crashed, right in the Kayas' yard! I went and knocked on the door to see if I could get it back and Mr. Kaya, with a very stern look on his face and without a word, handed me a crushed-up ball of sticks and string and paper etc. That's how mad he was. The old-time Kayas were not cheerful people. The younger generation seem very nice and fun! Even when I was last back home in 2003, the people working at Kaya's were nice. So times have changed.
