Been doing this mod for over 20years. Told everyone I know, but they all thought they knew better, & spent ungodly amounts of money. This mod completely eliminated the nose dive that occurs on the stock suspension on a Roadglide.

I think I get the reason for it - braking is a more gradual compression, hitting bumps is a quick compression so it's better to have the front shocks behave differently to each type of hit.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
That is correct. Chassis input (front brakes, rider passenger weight, gradual dips, accelerating in a curve) all should result in minimal fork compression. Wheel input (bumps, cracks, expansion joints) all should result in a quick compression and rebound of the front forks. That is what these do, resulting in very predictable handling, keeping the bike stable, letting the forks do the work of keeping the tire in good contact with the ground, while keeping the bike level. Different valving for different events the front tire encounters.

I haven’t even watched the entire video and I applaud you for selling this type of suspension modification! I run RaceTech Gold Emulators on my CBR and they are designed very similar to how those are. @@arthurcutaiar9994 copy and pasted from the report linked above- With the Gold Valve Emulators there are quite a few extra steps in the installation process, including complete disassembly of the forks, drilling holes in the Damper Rods, and reassembly. I sure wish these had been available about 6 1/2 years ago before I bought the Legends Axeo for my 15 RGS. I'm not complaining about the improvement of my ride quality with the Legends but this appears to be even better. Next time, this will probably be my choice. Great video!

Yeah, they are surprisingly effective. About 6 months ago I did back to back tests with the intiminators and then the new Legend Axeo. I was very surprised at how poorly the Axeo's worked, relatively speaking. They are much better than stock, but I did not like them as well as the Intiminators....AND I wanted them to be good. We were making a video to promote the Axeo's and we were planning on putting them on our website. But that did not end up happening after our testing. Data will be in our updated Front Suspension report in the next month.

My 2005 Specialized S-Works Epic MTB used a similar concept for their front and rear shocks- used inertia valve technology on their Fox shocks (Terra-logic). There was a rebound and bump sensitivity adjustment-they coined it the brain shock. They also had the same brain concept for the rear shocks. I found it fun to watch John try to explain the differences of damping; it's a complex concept for those unfamiliar with the dynamics of suspension. Chassis compression won't open the inertia valve because it is much slower in application, forcing oil through only the shim stack. Wheel compression rapidly forces the main spring into compression, opening the inertia valve to allow fast oil flow through the valve until the inertia valve spring catches up with and overcomes the damper rod speed thereby closing the valve and forcing oil through the shim stack. Rebound damping is provided by the check valve but is non-adjustable. I was wondering how you got around the damper rod orifice size running with the OEM spec oil weight. Lessening the oils viscosity does the trick by speeding the flow through the damper rod thereby making the Intiminator valves do the damping action. (Similar to GVE's but without the need to drill the rod orifices out). A very interesting concept. EDIT: The damper rod orifices are still the limiting feature due to oil flow limitations. If you're using OEM spec oil weight as per the instructions, how is the oil flow rate through the damper tube overcome?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Great, concise explanation. You may have said it better than we did!!! Thank you. 👍 When using the Intiminators a lighter weight oil is used to pretty much take the damper rod orifices out of the damping equation. www.dkcustomproducts.com/improved-front-suspension-w-intiminator-fork-valves-for-harley-dk-ric-int-39.htm www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/wysiwyg/Intiminators_03_24_22_-_Google_Docs.pdf Different Intiminators use different weight fluid. I'm liking what I see here, I could see where it would be good for both 2 wheel and 3 wheelers. Can they be adjuster by the owner, like say you spent too long at a pig roast and packed on a couple pounds? It appears that you build them according to bike and rider weight, so just curious a situation like that, or say you sell the bike to a much smaller person, would they need to be adjusted?

The Intiminator dynamically adjust damping, resulting in improved riding comfort & control. This is achieved via a motion sensing valve in the shock body that dynamically adjusts the damping to be ideal for both dips and bumps. great video and good information, but i think i am missing something. from what i can find, my 2019 EGlide standard has the Showa 49mm Dual Bending Valve. the bit of information i can find on this indicates that this is Showa's version of an intiminator, and utilizes a 2 circuit system. in that case, it would be doing what the Intiminator does would it not? therefore the only benefit of the Intiminator would be that i can tailor it to my riding style, weight etc as opposed to the showa which is likely a basic average for everyone kind of setting. thanks guys
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Great question! With the dual bending valves it is a design that uses shim stacks. This is what is talked about in the beginning of this video. There is a compromise in the dual bending between wheel input and chassis input. There is a shim stack that handles both. With the Intiminators you have the shim stack which is set more firmly for chassis input, which is why with the dual bending you still get brake dive, but with the intiminators brake dive is much, much less. In addition to the shim stack for chassis input and small bumps, the intiminators have an inertial valve for harder bumps. The inertia valves does NOT utilize the shim stack at all, it allows the fluid to flow rapidly, so that on a hard bump you still have a plush ride. A shim stack only technology will either be plush and mushy all the time or firm & bumpy all the time...or somewhere in-between (compromise). Intiminators have a shim stack AND an intertia valve, so the suspension is firm/planted when there are no hard bumps and plush when a harder bump is encountered.

Great product and understandable information in your video 👍👌 I have a 2017 Dyna lowrider s and have put progressive springs and the heavier weight SE oil in which I believe is 15w instead of the standard which I think is 10w, to take out some of the dive. Would these suit my shocks considering they are different to standard in other models because one side is compression and the other rebound instead of both the same? If they will suit should I put them in with the standard Weight oil (10w I think) which is recommended for the progressive springs anyway.. Would the 10w oil flow through the intiminators better than the 15w and therefore work better in this situation.. I weigh about 80kg, around 175 pounds if that makes and difference, and ride fairly aggressive most of the time..Any advice would be much appreciated..

@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you liked the video. Your 2017 Low RIder S has a cartridge in one of the forks. These do not work with cartridges. There are a few Models throughout the years that Harley has used a Spring and Damper Rod (Tube) on one side and a cartridge on the other. These do not work with cartridge style suspension. *Many Customers have replaced the cartridge on one side with the standard damper rod and then used the Intiminators with good results. If you replace the cartridge with a damper tube and springs, then, yes, on your 49mm forks you will want to use 10w fluid for the intiminators to work properly. The Intiminators will reduce brake dive significantly.

I think I understand how it works, but the explanation got confusing. The valve basically adds a dampening circuit (the shim stack) for compression travel that slows/ stiffens the ride for the better performance but the one way/ check valve opens and lets more oil through on compression for large bumps to be soaked up. And the Lighter/ quicker oil allows a faster rebound through the factory dampening circuit. At least that’s how I understand it working. Correct me if I’m wrong. Either way I’ll be putting a set on my bike, as the Bitubo rear shocks have highlighted how bad the front suspension is. And has even caused a very strange pogo type ride from the front end on a special section of road when I’m accelerating and going “fast” the road cracks Cause it.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
The shim stack is what is functioning during chassis input (front brakes, dips, curves), and as you say it keeps the bike from using too much of the available travel. Then when there is wheel input (big bump) the inertia valve fires and allow for much more travel, resulting in the bumps being absorbed by the suspension, rather than being passed thru to the rider or passenger. The check valve (which sits right below the shim stack) allows for the fast rebound, restoring the suspension to a point where there is a lot of travel available for the next wheel input event (bump). I believe you will be well pleased with the improvement these give your bike.

installed the intiminators today! Took the forks apart and installed the Intiminators today. Relatively easy job, but did take a buddy and I to put the fork cap back on considering we did it manually with out a press. Once we had the first one figured the second one only took 15 minutes or so which included a beer while the fork drained upside down. Prior to the change I rode a route that included city driving, pavement cracks, bad asphalt, and a cloverleaf. I crossed a set of train tracks twice. I also braked fairly aggressively from 50 kmh to try and quantify the brake dive. After the change, I essentially rode the same path. From my seat of the ass study, I believe the bike dives less quickly than prior when braking. It also strikes me that braking with some dive and hitting an expansion joint is less “abrupt” after the change. The bounce over the tracks is hard to say since the whole bike moves anyway. During some of the shallower bumps on the city streets, it feels like the bike is more planted. Perhaps the rebound is more controlled. It also seemed that the bike tracked better during the relatively aggressive cloverleaf turns. All in all, I believe there is a difference; however, it doesn’t strike me as a nite and day difference like I had when I changed my ’89 and ’07 E-Glides from stock to progressive front springs and 412 rear shocks. Nor as significant as going from the ’07 to the ’19. But I believe there is a difference. As I said, it does feel more planted on the ground. I have a trip coming up and will have more seat time with it. Is it worth it? i am not exactly sure what i expected, but yes i think it is. the bike seems to hug the road better. i am not regretting the purchase at all Now a word about DK Customs. these are good folks to deal with. i first started down the path for this item due to this You Tube video. i had some questions that i sent by email directly to them. Yes, you are correct. At higher speed rod travel, from the wheel hitting a bump, the IAS valve opens to keep the bike stable and smooth. At slower speeds and when there is chassis input (like from putting on the front brakes) the shim stack is active for the valving.

My question is, (the video describes the intiminaters as "using lighter oil" what viscosity is recommended? Can I use the fork oil from Wilbers that came with my new fork springs? (The bottle describes my new oil as SAE 10)

One thing I’ve always wondered is if each fork leg is doing its own circuit, would that make each fork leg flex differently? Like is only one leg working at a time and would that make each leg flex differently and would that effect handling? I could see it not making a noticeable difference for a light dirt bike or sport bike, but have reservations about a heavy touring bike. That’s the only reason I’ve stayed away from a separate compression leg and rebound leg. I have zero facts or knowledge to back that up. That’s just what’s in my head. Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated and save me a ton of money not buying cartridges

Your concern on the forks is also the same as having different shocks on each side of the swingarm. As long as the fork tubes and triple trees are engineered heavy enough, they will keep both forks rigid and working together, even if one is primarily compression valving and the other rebound valving...or if they had different weight springs in them. The same applies to the rear...as long as the swingarm is stout enough, the shocks can be different. Fortunately the 2009 and up HD Touring bikes have a good stout frame and font and rear forks. With the Intiminators they both work the same. They are not asymmetrical, so that is a non-issue anyway.

Using the Intiminators will preserve your travel, so when a large bump is encountered you will be much less likely to bottom out. If you are having too much sag, you can go with a stronger spring, OR make your pre-load spacer a little longer.

I'm looking to do a 2 inch lift on my bike front and back using Trike tubes upfront on a 22 Street Glide Special.. I'm intrigued to say the least about these valves.. I'll be spending $1,500 + mounts on the back I did not want to do that again upfront with cartridges.. I figure the forks are already built why can't you just improve them?.. As I understand it talking about single circuits.... Cartridge's are single circuit but one cartridge handles compression and the other handles rebound so each fork tube is working dedicated to something independent of the other side...I'm no engineer but to me fork tubes trying to work together should not have apposing force in opposite directions for felt stability, seams like it would be prone to a measure of binding....now they do run that system in track bikes for reasons only they know... If I understand video correctly these valves are the same in both fork tubes and able to function dedicated 100% to compression and rebound without compromising each task / circuit by use of the inertia valve... Have I got that right? As long as spring pressure on inertia valve is worked out and longevity is reliable it sounds good.

Newer Road Glides with the 49 mm forks have the Showa Dual Bending Valve architecture already. I’m personally not convinced that the Intiminators can be effectively used in conjunction with the SDBV system because you’d be trying to have two differently designed valving systems in play. DK needs to specifically address this issue in a video to clarify the pro/con on the issue.
