The Harman Target Curve is not only based on flawed science, but the Scientific Audiophile uncovers PROOF that Harman reseachers based the curve on RACISM! Special thanks to @DekoniAudio for exposing Harman!

This was so funny. I mean technically the paper published doesn't say that's the exact curve it should be, it says that's the range of responses you'd get with an anechoic flat response speaker, but in an ideal room. So high frequency drop off and slope could be different from the response curve depending on high frequency directionality. But yeah, Harmon's research is totally sound, and represents what audio engineers use when mixing. We want to reproduce what those mixing engineers hear (assuming their setup is the ideal), hence the Harman Curve research. But some do misunderstand that high frequency fall off which is a shame

Correct. In some double blind tests they were also wearing a funny white hood. You can't hear headphone audio properly that way.

That’s very funny. I don’t know if everyone will get that you were joking, especially about the curve you’re recommending using. Thankfully in point of fact, good research has been done and continues to this date.

Ok, I'm really boutta drop a whole fucking essay over here. I would like to point out two things.. Firstly, (and i may well be wrong here) having something covering your ears would muffle mainly the high end frequencies due to the low frequencies having more power and thus being able to travel through the felt more easily, where as the high frequencies are less powerful and more likely to dissipate when attempting to move through the felt. This is why if you're outside a car, or a club, or underwater listing to music being played above the surface, the sound you are hearing is very boomy and bass heavy. Having something covering your ears would make the sound MORE bass heavy than if there was no blindfold covering the ears, so the notion that one would prefer to hear more bass in this situation (implying that there is a lack of bass content) is kindof illogical when based on this premise. This is my basic understanding of soundwaves that I've picked up from the book 'the science of musical sounds' by Johan Sundberg, which I highly recommend, it's a good read. I just wanted to put that out there for the fuck if it, but all of this is more or less irrelevant because I'm pretty sure that's just a stock image of someone wearing a blindfold. Not sure if that's actually what the blindfold operation looked like or not. Moving on to the racism. I want to make it clear that the following is mostly just my opinion. I do feel like there is validity there. Like, all these artists are white as fuck, and this is the reason that I do kindof have a beef with the harman curve tbh (from the very small amount of info I've uncovered about it). I think that the problem though was, and probably still is, present in the systemic racism within the music industry. If you are white, it's much much easier to get your hands on a music deal, or have the money to get a professional to produce, mix, or master your music. This, especially back before the whole wave of self-produced music, is why there were indeed a shit load of white artists on the radio and record deals, and why many black artists who got deals were pretty heavily white washed I think. Unfortunately, it does make sense that harman would use these songs from white musicians, because these were likely well mixed, high quality, COMMERCIALLY TASTEFUL songs. I say commercially tasteful because these songs by white artists are probably what were most palatable for white listeners when they were recorded. I personally fuck with not only non white artists (as I think most should, i mean wtf right?), but I also love a good lofi recording, and especially stuff that's not as commercially acceptable. Speaking of listeners, I also have a problem with the demographic of our test subjects. This again is my opinion, but I think that audiophiles and "trained listeners" such as the ones that the study was conducted on, might have a different preference in terms of eq curve than that of the majority of people. The general public is not trained to hear distortions in audio signals, nor are they listening to music through high quality headphones, and I bet most of them aren't listening to these white artists with professional mixes and yes, pretty low bass content. I think that only testing your eq curve on the most skilled ears leaves a lot of the humanity out of the equation. In conclusion, I do agree that the harman curve, as well as the testing and research that went into it, is probably flawed. I just wanted to add onto what you were saying above So that's my little rant. Hope you've enjoyed, and have a good day :)
