Harry is one of the few reviewers on KZbin who can speak about a model's range with the fluency and balance of having driven many of them, and having the status not to be bowled over by anything Porsche. I know when I'm watching this that I'm not looking at someone who needs the next press car to come to them. Long live Harry Metcalfe. Great review.

Agreed, but what are Porsche doing with their branding ? I love the script that says ‘Porsche’ or ‘Boxster’ etc across the rear of each car, but newer models are starting to copy the boot lid if a 60s Ford Cortina . Too many names and numbers and sometimes badly sized/l displayed. My little Boxster is discrete by comparison and that is one of the main reason I like it so very much.

Hi Harry, as much as I’d love to think I have a GT3 engine in the back of my 997 GTS, it is unfortunately not the the Mezger unit. The 997 GTS was offered from the 2nd generation 997 and has a regular Carrera S DFI engine (385hp) with the powerkit installed as standard which bumps the power to 408hp. Still a lot of fun with the glorious 6-speed manual gearbox, but not as hardcore as the 997 GT3 (dare I call the 997 GTS comfortable?).

Yep. But TBH, I find I couldn't care less. Like celebrity gossip. Who cares? Seems I don't, and the philo-911ies can dream of this as they drop off to the shorter gearstick with the New Shape. A huge opening, indeed, Harry. Hoping for a vid on how's the paint drying on the estate fencing... x

I thought the point of so many variants was to give you a price range. They are ALL expensive, a base Carrera can be optioned out to be as expensive as a Turbo. And some of the variants are redundant.

Actually there are not too many 911 models. Porsche just makes it seem like it for marketing purposes. There is (in order) the Carrera, Carrera S, GTS, Turbo and GT3. With the standard Carrera being a sporty cruiser and the GT3 being the most track focused. You can get the Carreras also with 4WD - then the has a "4" in the Name. You also get most models as Coupe, Cabrio or Targa. However the suspension settings, engine, steering and mandatory options really make a difference on the road. Especially the GTs. They for example have a completely different front axle.

Three years ago I went to my Porsche dealership to put a deposit down for a 992 GT3, but changed my mind for a GTS instead and I never regretted my decision. It is such a fantastic car and so easy to live with. I opted for PDK instead of manual and I recommend PDK always. I also have a 2016 Boxster GTS (3.4 Liter) that I ordered with manual gearbox. Having one less gear means an extremely tall gearing across the range which kills the fun. I told myself to never do it again. Great video Mr. Metcalfe!

I think the split between the new GT3 and GT3 Touring has allowed the GT3 to become much more track-focussed, to the detriment of its on-road manners. The GTS seems like an excellent compromise though, and the fact that it's still available with a manual is just gravy.

I must say, the “quirkiness” being brought back by the manual isn’t surprising. It’s one of the only new manuals available now, especially over 100k. Brilliant as always Harry! I must say, I don’t agree on brakes. The carbons are so pricey, and for someone that would use it daily, not a journalist special, I would get the steels. That’s someone having fun drifting it around for a few hours, not normal wear.

Exactly what I thought, it's journalists drifting for the cameras hour after hour with some level of stability control still switched on that has most likely ruined those rear rotors. I don't think most owners would ever have this problem unless they were complete knobheads - and in any case, how many sets of steel rotors could you get for 6000 pounds? A lifetimes worth I'd bet.

I like to see your reviews a lot. my order is done for the GTS, but still not sure about manual gearbox or PDK. As you mentioned, the 7 gear manual must be fantastic, but PDK gives the full acceleration power of this car and on the race track, sport plus is the must have tool for fast lap times. Interior looks better with manual... no boost knob in steering wheel on manual, which is unbelievable to pass car on regular street. I still have time to decide😀 Greetings from Switzerland.

Center locks are nothing to be scared of - search Rennlist for "center locks again". I've used the big torque wrench and the torque multiplier side by side. Neither is difficult if you pay attention but the multiplier is easier/less dramatic. And less $$.

Let's be honest: 99.9% of GTS or turbo owners are never going to tinker with their wheels, ever. The retired orthodontist that buys this car is not mechanically or physically inclined to do anything like that.

Still can't quite figure how the Taycan which has half a tonne of extra raw material in it is deemed so much better for emissions than an ICE car. I know Volvo reckon it takes 70,000 miles to break even on the difference. Then it all needs recycling.

Perhaps Harry will comment on the recent Volvo report which shows EVs as only being green after >149kms (dependant on how green the electricity generation is).

As an owner of a 992.1 S (manual) would echo comments on the gear box. Really appreciate his commentary. Second owner but would counter that the disparity of used prices between the S and GTS would support pulling the trigger on a well optioned S. At 440hp (conservatively), more than enough to put a smile on your face, and perhaps get arrested.

Great car but then so is the ‘S’ which is properly fast now - you wouldn’t notice much difference between the two with less than 10% between them in power and torque. There is still quite a big price difference despite Harry playing that down so you can still make a case for the ‘S’ being the sweet spot in the range. Of course, some think the base model is that…

Great review Harry. And I know what you say about the GTS badge it really does make a difference. My wife bought a new GTS that benfitted from the deletion of the Turbo model in the Macan and it is a screamer at 434bhp I believe. It really does love to go as fast as you can in it. I got a new panamera 4 e hybrid and I am being honest a bit jealous of the GTS badge
