Harvesting leeks | Bed preparation | Planting pumpkins, cucumbers & beans | Beautiful spring growth!

Spring is in full swing here on my tiny urban farm and I am busy changing over the beds from winter crops to summer vegetables. I'm clearing the remaining leeks from my 'Lille' bed and planting out some of my cucurbits - Butternut squash and Muncher cucumbers, as well as my Gigantes beans which are a very large white bean that you grow for the beans not the pods. First I need to do my bed preparation. In spring, I clear the bed of old plants (generally by simply cutting the plants off at soil level but it's a bit different when harvesting leeks obviously), this includes any weeds. Then I add a couple of inches (about 5cms) of compost to the bed and leave the birds to reorganise it for me :-) Then, as soon as possible, I get the new plants in the ground. The objective is to leave the soil bare for as little time as possible because healthy soil requires the symbiotic relationship between plants and soil life.
I'm also really enjoying the beautiful plant growth in the garden and the flowers that are in full bloom. The Wedding Day rose is looking amazing and is covered with bees - the buzzing is really quite loud! The weather is perfect - for plants - at the moment with lots of rain, sun and warm temperatures. A bit more challenging for the gardener :-)
