Please check before write something. Columbia asked african countries, but none gave approval to take hippos. Also transportation of hippos is costly thing, and not Columbia nor any African country can afford it. Good that India and Mexico agreed to help

@@erob9446 no, they were just purchased by Escobar because he was rich and crazy, and brought into the country illegally (along with many other “exotic zoo type” animals… and decades later the hippos have really messed up the ecosystem down there. Similar issue in the Florida Everglades because of alarming numbers of pythons and boas and other animals not native to the land, just dumped out there by former pet owners (and a hurricane or two setting them loose)… really messed up

They are hurting the ecosystem and the balance in the nature of Colombia. You may not care, but they’re invasive species and can overpopulate. If you didn’t know, invasive species are a living thing that basically was brought from their natural habitat where they have food and predators for population control into a place where there is *NO* predator to control their population. Since thats the case, the hippo just keep eating and eating and repopulating. Since they’re eating so much of the ecosystems food, the other animals will soon be deprived of food and eventually will die out. This creates an unbalanced ecosystem. Although they’re not hurting humans they are hurting the environment they live in. Its important to keep populations stable and not let them roam freely. Those hippos will overrun the Colombian rivers if they’re not taken care of properly. That’s why they are unable to be free to do whatever. I hope this provides some insight.

Are there genetic problems because he started with four hippos? If he didn’t import more hippos this would be an interesting question. They gestate for 8 months (similar to humans) maybe 35 years isn’t enough time to see interbreeding problems. Crocodiles would be one of their predators. But thankfully they aren’t in this mix.

I'm pretty sure they could have left those hippos where they were. To me it's quite amazing and fascinating how four hippos eventually became 130. The Biologists and Ecologists and Geneticists should have been elated to study those hippos. But you have those jealous politicians and others that do not want anything associated with Pablo Escobar existing. In this case I think it is a big mistake.

Well so they havnt…it just sounds like they don’t want them there because cocaine was involved… but the hippos weren’t the ones carrying, supplying, or taking cocaine… so why am I the dumb one here???? Antioqia is not a country or province. It is refering a time period in roman-greacian history of earthquakes and volcano eruptions. De magdelene river is actually refered to be maghellan river, after the Explorer.
