I can sell you my stage 2 wrx. Its been professionally upgraded tuned coded etc. And all.. forged and more.. all done by a person i dont know with a very great reputation and he is expensive but his stuff works perfectly. But this damn car constantly break down and cost me multiple thousands of dollars in repairs every single year. But i still love the car. Im losing my friends over that. They want me to stop dropping money in that money pit of a car. It is a piece of shit after all. As for my expectations.. i never had a car above 120hp before. So i was pretty happy with it.. every time something broke i invested to put better stuff.. not its 305 whp. Kick ass sound system with dvd touch screen and all... All of a sudde at 60 000 km It was consuming oil so much. 2 quarts per oil change and i change oil every 4000km with synthetic oil. With top of the line oil filter. Then it also blew head gasket as well.. so i had engine took apart machined improved and put back together. I mean improved like forged pistons and rings tgv deleted, oversized crank bearing. The little filter for the turbo oil cooling line was removed to make sure it is not going to clog and burn the turbo. I changed the clutch twice . I changed the timing belt . I had the turbo rebuilt as well. I had failures in the gas system faulty sensors cost me thousands pf dollars to diagnose find and fix. Brake calipers. Wheel bearings. Ball joint. Headlights are a joke so destroyed by water and sun... i mean i could go on and one about this car. And all of those were between 60 000 km where it started to fail on me. And now at 88 000km I paid 30k in cdn and dropped about 15k in repairs. Thats half what i paid for the car Its a 2013 i bought in 2014. With 5000km on it. It was brand new. Since 2017 i been dropping all that money into it. So now its for sale.. there's basically nothing else to change in this car. Its been completely re-done... Yeah dknt buy a subaru expecting they will last i Like they did back in 1990's to 2000... its just not gonna happen... I think its what the guy really meant with expectations .. Anyways.. im out. Good luck guys out there... Get rid of those subaru as soon they start breaking on you. Peace.. I just saved you all 15000 each.... Thank me later.... You are welcome.....

Subaru is an icon in the racing community. Full bolt on will safely put down around 400ish give or take. But to get 900awhp will set you back around 65k. So its up to the wallet as to how much you want to make at the wheels and how bullet proof you want it. MOST importantly is a proper tune. My 05 STI does put down high 800's to the wheels and yes it took a dump truck full of money 💰 but well worth it to me personally. Subie owners here are mostly very nice people and respectful. But there's always that few. Great video. Awesome job 🇯🇵🏁🏁👍👍👍

Love the channel @smeedia. I drive a semi-modified 2017 STI, love it. Bought it from a very good friend that built the car well, tuned, and thought about. For under 40k with gorgeous coilovers, better tires, exhaust, tune, drilled/slotted rotors, access port, etc. nothing is as fun to drive IMHO. It's visceral with the 6spd manual, and ONE button for track mode. I drive with friends with cars that cost 2X+ as much, and while super nice, I still look at the STI as lovely car (I do like the Rally heritage). Not to mention, put snow tires on it here in CO in the winter, and blast around with a giant smile on your face. All in what you like; let the haters hate. ;)

Love your channel. I’m a 50 year old who drives an XRT tuned and lightly modded 5th gen legacy gt. (306whp, 360tq) All the work on all my cars is done in my driveway. I’m not really familiar with the Subaru ‘scene’ but I can say the community has been nothing but helpful when things go wrong, great guidance on the right way to mod a daily driver reliably. Some of what your feeling is being driven by Subaru itself. The move to the cookie cutter cvt cars is driving everyone looking for performance to basically one model. Gone are the days of the manual legacy/outback xt, forester xt for those who have the financial ability to mod the cars right. For God sake it took until 2018 until you could get the sti without that stupid wing! You’re left with wrx/sti owners who by and large can barely afford the car, let alone mod it correctly. Then they break. Then it’s Subaru’s fault. And the cycle continues. Subaru used to be a quirky niche car company with racing roots. Now they are pumping out generic Honda clones for soccer moms and dads by and large. Until they get back to their roots, the community will continue to suffer greatly. So will the company. Thank you for all you do. I for one appreciate your insights, and apply them regularly to my unicorn. Keep the faith, hopefully someone in the STI R&D will realize a cross trek sti 6 speed, or another forester xt, a real legacy gt would be a good idea. Then the community will benefit from some diversity of performance ownership.

*I'll try to make this as concise as possible Went from an 08' WRX to an 08' 335xi. I thought I wanted the most power possible w/ AWD and the 335 was my solution. I was able to build it to 500whp - it was an absolute beast. However, every time I saw a WRX on the road, I realized how much I missed that car. What I REALLY wanted was a car that looked bold, handled well, and sounded great. After breaking down due to a failed water pump, I spent nearly $1,000 on aftermarket parts to fix it. That's when I realized how much more expensive this car was to maintain than my old WRX. Sold the 335 and bought a 13' WRX. Driven it for 4 years/75,000 miles and I couldn't be happier. I haven't had to do any maintenance beyond wearable parts + recommended interval maintenance. The WRX does have its quirks but in all relatively, it's an extremely reliable and cheap car to maintain. I honestly can't see a time in the future when I don't have a Subaru in my garage.

Been watching your channel for longer than that, though, and I can honestly say had it not been for your videos, I could have made some bigger mistakes going into mods. As far as the negativity and judgments go from other car communities...well that's their problem. My WRX puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. With that amount of joy, it's easy to ignore the haters. I don't have to floor it, I don't feel the need to speed anywhere, it's nice to just cruise and feel that rumble that only the boxer gives. Thanks for your videos, my dude. Keep 'em coming.

I've been obsessed with Subarus since I watched rally races as a kid. I can say I always have people in chargers and civics always trying to race and being dumb when I'm daily driving my WRX. I hate when I'm at car meets and everyone is just like oh another stock subie. Everyone just assumes if you dont have a built motor you haven't invested a lot of time and money on your car. That's the only thing that bothers me the most in the car community stigma. Subies... we ain't fast but we nimble 😂

It’s crazy how small jokes can actually cause grow into something much bigger. Unfortunately it’s the same thing with mustangs. You hear mustang and automatically think people crashing into crowds. Even though it’s a joke, a lot of people surprisingly take it to heart and end up hating the car. I personally hated mustangs but as soon as I drove one my opinion completely switched. I hope Subaru’s don’t fall into the same problem. They are such amazing cars and seem to age very well. Great video btw!

I am right there with you! I have been a Subie lover/owner since 1996. Current rig is a 2006 OBXT with upgraded: VF52 turbo (from the stock VF40), up and down pipes, fuel and oil feed, and 2+ pro tuning with Cobb Accessport V3...not to beef the car, but to improve the stock design for reliability and efficiency (and a touch more fun) of the original design...this is the Sub I have always loved and want to drive and enjoy it for many years to come. Show me another performance vehicle that you can take to the mountains, snow, and light off-roading the way you can a Subaru!!!! It is not about the power or speed, but about what you want out of the capabilities of the car...To me, there is nothing else that fits the bill other than a fully capable Subaru. This is just my own opinion for myself, but I love a car I can rock to a desolate location, AND pass that slowpoke on the highway with ease. I also own a Dodge Ram for its own purposes (that I love for thousands of other reasons), but my Subie will always have my heart. By the way, I don't really fancy the energy drinks, don't wear a cartoonish cap, have also quit smoking through the use of a vaporizer, and am nearly 50 years old...to me the Subaru platform is just a wonderfully capable vehicle that can be made just a bit better through intention. A good tool for what it was designed for, if you take the time to understand it...

I really don't know where it all comes from, and I really don't know wtf car someone has in mind as better when hating on Subaru. Subaru was pretty much the last company I actually gave a fair shake. I started domestic. Had 3 automatic Chrysler transmissions blow on me. The manual was half decent though. I had a 305 GM V8 throw a rod. I had a Ford Tempo blow a headgasket. Had the wheels literally fall off a Mazda 323. Blown Nissan Altima manual trans. And then I had shit like blown seals on Hondas, but as long as you kept the fluids topped off they were basically indestructible, so that's what I drove for yeeeears. But they were shitboxes, even my beloved Integra has mismatched paint, tons of rust and the sloppiest shifter linkage in all history. So with learning and money, I decided I wanted a WRX. So I got a bugeye, and I played into the whole "they're made of glass" ethos and kept absolutely everything OEM. I chooched it maybe once a week. And honestly? Should've had more fun from the get go. I know how to actually drive stick, I never once had problems with that "horrible" 5 speed. And how it just goes through oil so much? About 1/4 the oil consumption of my BEST Honda engine. The insanely expensive OEM parts? Similar to Honda prices. So a few years down the line and I'm just like, this car was supposed to be so fragile but I ended up doing less maintenance on the Subaru because didn't leak nearly as much. So I dunno if people are comparing them to German cars with double the price tag or what. But going similar vintage, all parts of Subaru's compete just fine with your typical US and Japanese brands. Show me a cooler gauge cluster of similar costing cars to my GR in 2013!! And keeping on that idea, where are these 400-500 HP stock Toyota and Chevy 4 cylinders that are 30-40 grand if 300 HP is so underpowered?? There's totally a reason guys like you, Mr. Subaru, Mighty Mods and the guys who tune the Mighty Mods cars and tons of others love them so much. Sorry for the huge rant.

I bought the new 2015 model when I was 49. It's my daily driver and I love the car. It's stock, save for a Mishimoto intake. I take it to the dealership for regular maintenance and I check the oil and tire pressures regularly. I don't abuse the car but I do enjoy the performance aspects of it. Still has the original clutch with 95,000 miles. I will never get rid of this car and it has never given me any real trouble. Had to replace some faulty solenoids once. Looking forward to more Subarus in my future.

Good vid! I find the same things!. When I go to the local Thursday night car cruise, which attracts mostly older folks( like myself and older) I get lots of people talking to me and liking my car. I find though that this crowd, like myself aren't bias to any brand and just want to share the love of cars. When I show up at the Friday and Saturday night meets, which is mostly younger crowd, mist are in their own little "clicks" and aren't very open and friendly, and yes there is a fairly large hate on for subies. I find that most the hate cones from ppl that have owned subies and killed them because they either didn't build them right, or didn't treat them right. People HAVE to realise that though Subaru has a racing heritage the cars you buy are NOT race cars. They are not meant to be bagged on and abused, unless of course you want problems. I hate to be stereotypical here but most of it comes from the young generation.

Well put. Do your research. Know what you're buying. If you mod your car and it fails - that's 100% on you for pushing your car out from what its designed for failing to build it up right. If horsepower is your end (and only) goal, there are better cars for you. That said, Suby has their work cut out for them in they want to stay relevant in the sport segment. While HP isn't everything the iconic STI competes with ... a camry. I've got high hopes that the new WRX is the car I want and the new STI is the car enthusiasts need.

Gonna be honest... I fall into the new category and apparently I like to learn things the hard way. Just blew my engine last week and it’s been a very crappy situation. I did everything I could to be smart about aftermarket parts. I didn’t just throw parts on without tuning. I’ve referenced a lot of things from nasioc to smeedia here to the technician manual and reading up on other people’s nightmare stories about their subies. Needless to say... now I’m really going to learn a lot about the mechanics side of owning the sti. Shopping for a good small block and trying to determine whether or not to rebuild the stock turbo or get a new one. Everything happens for a reason I guess. Any opinions on aftermarket small blocks, bypass valves, turbos, etc is welcome. Also, not sure what happens when the rebuild is done. I don’t know if I should break in the new engine/ parts before a tube or after.
@Smeedia4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear 😖 youll have to break in the new engine (tons of videos on how to do so) when it comes to deciding on what short block and tuebonset up you want to go with you first should determine what power you want from the car. I have both a JDM Forester Cross sport with the EJ205 and a Fiesta ST with the 1.6 EcoBoost. I can make relatively the same power for the same money in both the difference is the Ecoboost I can get an accesport and slap any bolt on part and hit those numbers. I've driven Subaru's long enough to know if I did the same thing I will wreck the engine. The boxer engine in general requires much more responsible modding and proper tuning as a result of the H4 turbo downfalls. This isn't a bad thing it's just a fact. Subaru's are not a simple platform and require research and proper tuning for mods but once you do they are amazingly capable vehicles. Another point I want to make is the I4 EcoBoost requires 10,000 mile intervals before an oil change and takes 5w20 where as the EJ because of being an H4 requires oil changes every 3000 miles and prefers a thicker oil like 5w40, if you aren't aware of this and treat maintenance like a I4 you can easily sheer your oil, run low simply due to H4 inherent design and end up spinning a bearing. Also a ton if manufacturers have quirks that can grenade engines, BMW rod bearings being a maintenance part, Porsche IMS bearings, VW and Audi electricals and carbon build up, Honda block shrinkage etc

How do you like the Fiesta compared to the subaru based off of driving experince? I have a few buddys who have focus and Fiestas but have never driven them
@Defury82854 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia the Fiesta is a lot more rowdy and go kart like, it's got the whole slow car fast feeling down to a science. It's making less power than my Subaru and is quite a bit slower but feels a lot faster. The Subaru is more refined and and visceral though. They are both fun to drive for different reasons. The fiestas got a real Miata/BRZ chassis feel to it but with more torque and an engine that's easier to make power with being turbo, the FWD is a downside but the car is balanced so it almost feels RWD and constantly wants to oversteer. I don't think anything will beat the feeling of an AWD turbo car slamming you back into your seat when you launch it though. I will say though the Fiesta ST is a completely different driving experience to a Focus ST, I much prefer my Subaru to the Focus STs I've driven.

@Smeedia4 жыл бұрын
The 11-current gen are all good, if you buy used avoid molded cars and find one with service history. They're really nit bad to work on but modding them for power can get expensive.

If it wasn't for Subaru sticking with boxer engines, I'd have one a long time ago. Poor gas mileage, propensity to blow head gaskets, burning oil. I know that not everyone has experienced these issues but if Subaru is known for these in the community, it's enough of a problem to stay away, for me anyway. Every time I consider buying a car, I always consider WRX or STI. Also, I'm not into modding my car too much but would like to have more power so I usually go for ecu tune and a couple of bolt ons. Compared to GTI, for example, WRX just doesn't stack up that well. Then I consider how much subies have to be babied when tuned, I run the other way. BTW, I like your channel, keep it up.

Appreciate the support, head gasket issues were only a problem on older impreza 2.5is so not much to worry about there. The newer FA engines are awesome on gas mileage. But for cheap power definitely not thr way to go 🙏

I always wanted a subaru ever since it first came to the states and especially when I played this game called import tuner challenge on Xbox back in 2006 and I kept losing to a STI. Even with a 350z switch from bigger turbo to a twin turbo. 2019 after deployment I got one and I'm happy but the culture is so different than other car groups. So I think subaru is not a joke. I just think people (not all) don't look at the history of Japanese cars. They're not made for drag strips. Could they yes. They're made for autocross and time track cars. I'm still learning about them to this very day

Hi I am new to Subaru and a new WRX and your was one of channels I learned a lot from. Now my opinion where some of the stereotypes came from movies. Also looking into some problems that are common to the boxer motor is some of the modifications you have recommend. It makes me wonder why Subaru have not either added them as is in the cylinder 4 cooling or improving the oil pick up and pan. Letting the aftermarket come up with a solution then having as reported by owners who had claims with SOA that there response can downright hostile. Though Subaru is not alone in that and my understanding how the dealers act are also part of the problem. I recall reading about a Jeep dealer flagging somebody who owned a wrangler who had problems after taking off-roading calling it improper use. One of things I came across in researching was dealing with piston designs of where the ring placement is and gap. Also that Subaru when first introduced the STI in 1994 I think the STI had forged internals. So far I am thoroughly loving my new wrx, I agree if you don't maintain a car or any mechanical equipment it will fail eventually.

I don't usually comment on videos but I feel like I need to, I'm with you man, I got a 04 WRX Club Spec in January this year from a dealership and 6 weeks later it got rod knock.. that didn't scare me off though, I got an EJ207 (fully built) and while I was there I did a few other things like defi gauges, turbo back, slotted rotors and pads, processwest tmic, new wheels and tires, sparkplugs, e85 and now I'm just waiting on getting it tuned, I'm in Australia and we're under lockdown at the moment so it makes it hard. But I've put about $25K AUD into my car but that doesn't bother me because I now have the car I always wanted, it runs so well on 98 pump at the moment. But anyway my point is that I agree with you about the bad experiences, you can't let that define your outlook. Keep up the good work man I've been watching since you had about 2k subs before January 👌❤️ edit: and I'll never sell it! 😋😁

Keep that gem running for years to come 🙏🔥 appreciate the support man and always nice to see some more comments coming through 🙏 P.s: you guys get some solid pump gas! I only have 91 up here 😅

@@Smeedia haha yeah I think there's some sort of conversion rate that explains the 95 you guys get is the same as our 98. Just the way it's measured I think. But doesnt matter now because I'm on the corn juice. 😋 🌽 Other bits of you're curious- HKS coilovers, alarm system (one that actually works 😉), sti wing, hella horns, lightbar to see kangaroos 😀, 1050cc injectors, and little other sti bits to make the engine work with the body. edit: it's a Silver 04 WRX with Gold STI 17 wheels and re003s

Turbo Subarus are relative performance bargains. They appeal to a wide audience. Every generation, the WRX gets more civil and has less trade offs. Even if the percentage of a-holes in an enthusiast group does not increase, the sheer numbers keep pace with sales. The Subaru community *seems* like it was a more considerate place bad when everyone was anonymously on forums. Information was easier to find, people had less fragile egos and a greater willingness to learn. Part of that is the relative ease of making a quick stage2 wrx....you don't need to know much, just open the Cobb site and order the AP, S2 parts, and throw an OTS map on. Definitely sub-optimal, but still very quick. Don't even need to talk to another human being, just plug and chug. Tanner, your take on people's expectations is dead nuts accurate. People forget that Subaru doesn't make classical sports cars. Their vehicles have humble roots. Subaru's special sauce is making a car that's better than the sum of it's parts. A car that's a better than average in most categories. Inexpensive, tossable, quick, fun quirky cars.

100% dubarus were never built from factory to handle oodles of power, they are well balanced cars that give the driver a fun experince. And a lot of people who have the negative experince come in with the wrong expectations that then leaves a sour taste in their mouth with the brand.

Thanks for making this video. I agree that we get some bad reputations. Not all cars are the same and that goes for owners too. I love Subaru and everything STI.

I bought an Evo X because I wanted to make reliable power. But I will always say that Subaru knows how to make their cars look and feel good. If the Evo wasn't my dream car, there'd be an STI in my driveway instead. Evo body style and look: 6/10 STI body style and look: 10/10

The Evo 9 is one ive always wanted. Love the simple look of the car handles amazing and makes power easy. Only thing I have never liked from Mitsubishi was their interiors 😖

I couldn’t agree more. I daily my 2016 wrx and it’s a fun car to have around. Recently bought bc coilovers oh man! It’s like a go cart! Had my stock suspension for about 5 years now and it’s that time to upgrade. My advice to the new Subaru owner; buy what you can afford and wait till your warranty expired.
