I am an Etsy seller. I had a corporate job in accounting and felt like my spirit was dying. I started making jewelry and selling at shows. I kept stopping myself from going online because I didn't know how to photograph jewelry. I took the plunge and now I have 21,000 sales on Etsy and my husband quit his job and works with me. You can do it!!!

My husband and I own and run a furniture repair / refresh business from home. I can't tell you how many shitty jobs I had and was barely making ends meet and I was miserable. I had dreamed of doing what I do and one day I just did it. We're doing very well and there's nothing that compares to waking up when you want to, working when you want to, taking a bike ride when you want to. If you want it, go for it!!!

Women over 50 are the BEST teachers! They don’t care what other people think anymore, they have come into their own, they’re experienced, and have emotional intelligence way better than men. The “youngsters” have saturated the online social media industry (good for them) but we need more awesome experienced women out there! You GO ladies, you got this! The most incredible wisdom comes from these women 🎉

This came at the exact right moment in my life! As I get dressed to go into the worst job I have ever had in my entire life, this was the kick-start I needed to get over my fear and gather my courage to become self-employed where I could make my own hours and do something I actually enjoy for once. It's only been myself and my fear holding me back. It's time to do it!

Thank you both so much!!!! (Mel and Amy) One word "FREEDOM" changed my life today. No more 9-5. My 9-5 took EVERYTHING from me because I let it. I hated that career - it left me with no mental and physical energy even on my most successful days at work. I'm selling my condo in Chicago that's become impossible to afftord (even after 20 years of ownership and 3% mortgage interest rate) to afford as a single 51 yr old woman, cashing out, leaving the horrible crime, sky rocketing costs due to idiot politians, etc. and a career I HATE. Unbossing and putting a plan together to move, set up a cheaper camp - and starting a business PERIOD. Done with the 9-5 I freaking HATE, HATE HATE. Freedom - you ladies f-ing kick ass!!!!! I needed this kick. I feel alive again for the first time in prob 15 years!! I love me, I love you, I believe in me, I believe in Mel and Amy and everyone else that wants to change their lives, we can change our lives!!" You can do it!! Here I go.....

This was the PERFECT podcast. I’m driving deliveries while in a complete fibromyalgia flare. I keep stopping to cry and gather myself back together to drive some more. I have an amazing program I want to get out there, a decent social media following and i lost my job 6 months ago. I KNOW my program works because I’ve used it multiple times. I was coaching and doing social media a couple years ago and burned myself out. So i stopped. When im driving, i listen to YOU the whole time. But THIS one…hit so hard. This is inspiring. I have less than $50 to my name and no home. I have to make the next right steps because I’m not making enough to get by and the car I use is on its last leg. I am driven and sure of my program. It’s for finding yourself when you feel lost for GenX women. I’m 51 and want to live the life YOU are living. I know I can do it. Thank you for always seeming to know exactly what I need to hear, when I need to hear it! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I think one of the reasons the interviewee does well is simply the way she communicates. She uses subtle tools like word stressing to get her simple messages across in a powerful way. That means she is more engaging and can be more successful, no matter how good the content is.

This morning I open utube and find this podcast! Wow! How inspiring!! I’m 65 years old. Was fired from my job at 55. Couldn’t find a job so decided it was okay to retire. Financially I was lucky enough, that I could…and I’m grateful. But lately I feel like I want more. I want to be of service. I want to make my own money. I want to be happier. I need a purpose! Thank you for this podcast. I went right to Audible and bought Amy’s book! Mel I have bought a couple of yours!

Mel, you are truly inspirational. Your examples and explanations were easy to relate and understand. You are absolutely right that our beliefs create our lives. I remembered a Buddha quote “what you think. You become..”. A simple little quote yet so deep and profound in the message, but yet so many of us lost sight of it. Our mindset or beliefs truly dictate what is in our lives and we can change course from a path filled with negativity to joy with simply changing the sunglass lens. Thank you for sharing this powerful message and please continue to do what you do. ❤❤

Hi Mel, I am a 23-year-old Texan, who got let go a few months ago. The journey has not been a "walk in the park." I have definitely experienced new emotions and thoughts that I have never thought existed. I have been (like most) gone through a loophole where you push everything to the side: Job search, digging into feelings and thoughts, shifting your mind to just "living life." It has been really challenging coming out from it and not blaming the universe for everything, you know.. So in light of a book club I am in, which takes place every Friday evening, there was a quote that just kept playing in my head: "Your Future Matters MORE Than Your Past." I didn't know what it meant and why my brain was circling back on it for a hot minute. I mention it to the rest of the participants and a good man responds "You need to reimagine your future, it seems like you want to look back into the old routine that has worked in your past, and now it doesn't seem to work." Reimagine.. what even?? So I went on KZbin and your video was the first to appear. At first, it was a little hard to not have biases on these kinds of videos when they are everywhere. But you had this energy of simplicity and humbleness. I stayed longer, and then I started to take notes.. A whole bunch of notes. I haven't felt in a long time my writing to be meaningful and intentional. There was something obviously going on inside that said "idk why I am doing this, but keep writing and listening." So in conclusion, I feel like I've been lifted and a part of my brain has reappeared back to the surface. A part that has been lost for years. I believe this is the start to a change. Thank you for being special in your own way, and believing in everyone who wants to succeed and feels lost.

Mel. Thank you so much for putting this HUGE masterclass together and presenting it to us for free. Most times, when people are saying the things you both say in the lead in here, they are selling something and the whole time I'm waiting for them to get to the sales point. Which gives me extreme anxiety because I know I don't have money for it. Also, if I were asked what business I'd open, I would SAY that I don't know what business I want to "open", but i actually DO. The reason I would say that, is because I'm conditioned to think that you can't make money doing something that way...or specifically, *I* can't make money making art. (That's an OLD voice from when I was a teen) When I go through old magazine clippings, I always come across this article I tore out about a woman who designs her own fabric. It's what I want to do. Problem is, I haven't developed my artistic skills because of that old message from when I was a teen. When you said to pay attention to when I feel jealous, that feeling of, "I want that"? That's when I look at that article. As my eyes hungrily devour how this woman built her own design company, and works from home, being creative and making beautiful things...that is what I want. I've gone so far as to search what computer programs I'd need for the graphic design portion of that business, I've signed up to get emails from people who are selling information on how to get started in surface pattern design, but because I don't really know anything about it, I'm afraid to pay for their "program" and find afterward that it doesn't really tell me much about it at all. I NEED to be my own boss, I NEED to have autonomy, and I NEED to surround myself with beautiful, creative things. I'll keep listening to this masterclass and see how I can get on with it.

I am so poised and ready for this video, this moment. I am a Retired RN, (burned out tbh) I am in a new state & city after a family tragedy relocated me, Currently self-employed in home organization/deep cleaning service But… My calling and gift to my fellow human beings is that of a midwife to the dying: I am a Death Doula, after 10 years as a Hospice Case Manager, and I simply need to launch my service and create a business doing so. I’ve only worked as a Doula for friends and family, by word of mouth. Stumped at the marketing and business framework ideas but I know for certain this is what I want to do, it brings me the utmost fullfillmemt and my clients are immensely satisfied with my interventions, and I realize I am absolutely graced by my Creator with this skill, it’s a specific calling I am uniquely equipped for and I want to do only this for income and ministry.

I just wrote a book for newly diagnosed diabetes patients/family.....I have been procrastinating about launching it. I've sent it to doctors and pharmacists and diabetes coaching clients and so far I've received excellent feedback. In fact one practitioner told me "this has EVERYTHING I wish I had enough time to teach my patients...the world needs this book!" My friend from graduate school said "Every day you don't get this done and out there you are robbing the public of the gifts that you have, you have helped so many people already, you know your shit like the back of your hand, get it done!!" And yet, I've been procrastinating. Not sure what that's all about....other than fear of success or some other subconscious bullcrap. This video today has launched me in to 5-4-3-2-1 mode and I'm gonna spend my day figuring out how to launch TODAY!!!!!

I really enjoy your podcast. Loving the sisterhood! ❤ I'm totally broke too! My anxiety is off the charts. I'm 53 and going back to college to finish my psych degree. I was scouted by Harvad after I was initiated PTK. The only thing is I'm not sure I want to finish my PhD now. I really really want to start my own business. After my Awkening, lost all of my attachments after a series of events. I have found, that after a lot of reflection with no phone that I threw in the Trent River in Bew Bern, NC for 6 mths. I started off with a red blanket and pillow WITH my daughter and dog after my half sister, I'm his only child, took EVERYTHING he left so more daughter and I would be safe. Needless to say after EVERY unimaginable circumstance out there in the wilderness could happen. My daughter and I went way off the grid in Northern FL down a dirt road with only cows and chicken around, well deer and bunnies too. I di b r want to go back into all the bullshit. I have a fst ass now and it's great! I have roots in my hair and live barefoot. After all the shock wore off, I doubt ME! Trying to think how i can still work remotely, online, so u can homestead in all pots for herbs so we can move further when we can. I need to figure out how to use the internet too. I'm kinda out of the whole label things rather that mental health gifts. NEEDED to here this today sisters in light. I mean I'm Ramon noodles broke...lol, but I grew my first two tomatoes! What?????? I'm so getting the book when I can. Really guys, you guys are frigging badass. Trying to catch up! So much GRATITUDE ❤ I really want to thank you for the sincere authentic challenges. That's it! The betrayel. I was the caregiver for both of my parents as their surragets,,so whatever my dad left my daughter and I, including the house, my half sister is an accountant and ran all of my daughters and my college money, EVERYTHING! So I'm really in the deficiet just trying to pay electric with little stupid jobs which is NOT me. I really still want to help ppl and leave my legacy behind and have my daughter look up to me again. No child should ever have to see a parent blind sided, let alone watching her cry from hunger pains and the loss of her dreams. We have safe shelter now. I'm going to keep watching you guys because I really really need to kick ass. I couldn't even take a loan out on my car, they out a line against it so I couldn't pay for an attorney. I feel like I need to tell someone though because the other half sister set herself on fire and killed herself because of all the same toxic shit. It's hard to move on because my dad was in Korea and a NYCF so he was old school and put everything in stocks. It's always in the back of my mind to be my full creative self when I feel that her half sister should be held accountable or my the nice half sisters death would have been all in vain. They took 2.5 million in stocks. Do I walk away for my own sanity, or do I walk away my for my other half of sanity? Free! OK, the light bulb just went off. Libraries even! I do need a side hustle. Thank you so much for the recipes. Yeah, pity parties got to be done with. Sooo glad you guys did this!!!!🎉

Hi Mel. I just recently came to know about you and thank God I did. I was in such a messy place mentally. Your 5 second rule has helped me to start gaining control of my life. God bless you. You are going a great job. I'm also listening to your podcast and it has been such a help to know about all these new things about mental health which I didn't knew before. I feel like I finally get to know some of the answers to why my mind and thoughts work the way they do. I'm going to graduate in about 4 months and feel kinda sad that I won't be seeing my friends after that. I am very attached to them, we spend a lot of time together at college and at hostel and can't imagine the future without having them in my life. It feels scary knowing that eventually we all will go in different directions in life and no matter how much we say that we will meet but we know that we may not get a chance to see each other again. It would help if you could make a podcast episode on how to deal with these thoughts and the sadness and anxiety that follows. And how to detach from people that have to leave and move on with life. It would really help me.

Just to push back a little bit....I know many business owners and they all say it's WAY harder and more stressful than working for someone else. Yes, they don't have to ask a boss's permission, but if they don't work it all comes crashing down. It's not all sunshine and roses being your own boss. Sometimes the stress is overwhelming. Business owners are "free" but also they are NOT free at all because they are accountable to all their clients and their staff and their family!

Agree. In my opinion working 9-5 or so call minimum wage jobs or being an entrepreneur is all very valid option. At the end it all come down to what suited best for that person. Stop with the stigma being an entrepreneur is the best "job", but if it suited you go for it babe.

There's some truth to what you're saying but as a former business owner I can let you know I have cried more on my 9:00 to 5 that I have now than I ever did running my Med-Spa. I was a lot less stressed running my business I worked 9 to10 hour days but it was way less stressful than my current 9 to 5:00 job. I often work a lot of overtime with my 9:00 to 5:00 and I don't enjoy my work. I really think it depends on the person and their personality. Some people thrive clocking in and out from work and love to come home and not think about anything.. I prefer having my own business. if I wanted to take a 2-hour lunch break because that's what I needed I could totally do it on my job now we only have 30 minute lunch breaks which is ridiculous . I have to accrue PTO time to get time off work where as with my own business I could just mark my calendar.

I cannot say enough about the message of this podcast! It has been sourcing my Mind since watching it yesterday. I've heard a lot of what Amy shares here before, yet this time your conversation helped it 'click' into place with the rest of my Life. Self-awareness - the wake-up call. I've been feeling the red hot poker to write for SO long but not just the thought .. I want to write ... I mean, when I come into alignment with an career author, the pull is indescribable. My insides twist. This KNOWING urges leadership - unbossing yourself ~ which seems to be the gap for me as I came to see when you mentioned our parents working to earn a paycheck. The insight from that shifted something inside me as I mentioned in my previous comment. Thank you both for your enthusiasm and encouragement! I took action immediately. The thoughts on social media ... BOOM! On it. I made sure I'm connected to people like Anne Lamott and Julia Cameron. Anne lives & writes in a way I can see for myself. Julia .. heck, Julia and I live in the same town! I believe inviting her to join me for tea is my next bold move! Mel .. you've moved mountains for many. Thank you for being you and seeing the light in all of us!

Of all the podcasts I've heard of yours, Mel, this one resonated with me the most. I cried twice; the pad Thai story and the gal that got laid off.
@MsSbrighton
@MsSbrighton Жыл бұрын
I got laid off 7 months ago (even though the company made it look like it was on mutual agreement) from a job that I thought it was the opportunity of a lifetime. It turns out it wasn't, and even though it has been rough because I do feel bad and like a big fat looser, I know that it wasn't the right place for me, I was not happy and the company does not match my values. This has made me acknowledge something that I knew deep inside of me for a longtime: I am not made for the corporate world, I don't like 9 to 5, I don't like to fit in cases like everyone else, I am the round peg in a square hole! I like to be free and independent! I know that is the opportunity to change my life into the life that I really want! While I was listening to your episode, I started listing what I like to do and might be good at doing, and this is where the however part comes up: how do I transform that into to a business? That has been my big question. I am not afraid to take the necessary steps to transform my life, I just don't know how...how do I get there? How do I transform all that into a business? In any case, it's always good to listen to people who have been where I am, it makes me feel that I am not alone. ☺

I have attempted to meditate many times in my life and prior to this CD the only success I've experienced is with live guided meditation. kzbin.infoUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq This is the first CD I've used that cuts through my unmedicated ADHD and enables me to truly relax and experience a quiet and energizing interval. The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!

Hi Mel, I've been following you for a while and have been binge watching today whilst doing a major clean up mission after some work on my house. I'm going to email you about the things you've inspired me to do, but I just wanted you to know this. I watched the video on synchronicity and found it fascinating. Then my son phoned me, and we were talking about how he hated his job and how he would really love to do something training dogs. I watched the first 5 minutes of this video, then shared it with him because it seemed to be addressing a lot of the issues we'd been talking about. I could not believe it when the conversation turned to someone who started a business dog training! I sent him the clip immediately - synchronicity or what! ❤ Thank you for all your inspiration🎉

thinking about 'unbossing' one self .. the way you described what most of us witnessed as children, Mel ... our parental figures going to work for a paycheck, answering to someone else, temporarily losing personal authority ... it's no wonder: 1) they were more authoritarian at home! They were unknowingly reclaiming their power and the endless power struggle between parent and child. This dispels quite a bit of disturbance around childhood. And 2) why searching for jobs while trying to build a business is a deeply seated survival mechanism that touches more than a concern for money. It's a tactic that resurfaces whenever triggered by the subconscious belief that questions our authority as a leader in our own life. So good! Thank you!

29:30 or so: Ha ha ha. When Mel says she sat at her desk and pretended she was working (knowing she did not know how to do that job she'd talked herself into) so reminded me of when George Costanza in Seinfeld carries around the Penske file, and sits at his desk not doing any freaking work. He doesn't even try though. Finally, the jig is up and he's fired. Love it.
