A "live" performance (two independent live takes merged together), all on hardware, and inspired by creative solutions to hanging out and making music in a pandemic era. I miss Sam, but I'm grateful for modern conveniences in recording.
As with all my tracks with Sam, the performance is centred around the Analog Four MkII. Despite it being only four voices, it has 16 oscillators whose pitch can be parameter locked for chords, plus sub-oscillators at octaves or fifths. Couple that with two filters per voice, three excellent-sounding effects (chorus, delay, and reverb), and maybe my favourite hardware sequencer (the Elektron style), and it's an incredibly powerful box for handling most of what a song needs. I also added in the Moog Subsequent 37 (with the Empress Reverb), because nothing cuts through a loud mix better than the SS37, in my opinion. It's brash and beautiful and a real hands-on delight to work with.
On Sam's end, he's using the Roland TD-12 kit sending note data to EZ Drummer. Sam's taken to doing his own drum production, which is awesome and leaves me with mainly just gluing it all together into a mix.
As ever, making music with Sam is a real delight. I feel awfully lucky and I'm really looking forward to compiling an album of songs with him.
