Have we found an old Irish lucky charm? - Renovations in our Irish stone farmhouse continue

Having done as much as we can in the first half of the blue bedroom, we moved straight on into the other end of the Irish stone farmhouse to continue with the restoration. With a new found confidence and knowing what to expect, we quickly removed the partitions and ceiling boards making another large bedroom. With the clearing up time added, I think it was about 12 hours in total, a lot quicker than the two or so weeks in the other bedroom.
When taking the first partition panel down, I (Ben) found a small bundle of what appears to be hair. Dawn shows it to the camera and asks for your input. Is it an old Irish lucky charm?

Hi Pat, thanks for watching. There are still two other windows in the bedroom but the front one does let in nice light when it is sunny. Sadly, the partition will hide this window. We really enjoyed this side of the house. It was only days since we had done it before really so knew what to expect and how it all came apart. Those freaking nails. When we moved into this house, the carpet had apparently shrunk (worn out, as well) and I found those long nails in the carpet holding it to the floor. Long nails everywhere; apparently never heard of shorter nails or screws for anything. And apparently the thinking is if 1 nail will hold it, then 3 are even better. I feel for you, truly.

Oh those nails, I am pleased someone else knows that feeling of prying off a piece of wood held on by 3 x 5" nails hahahaha. I have found the easy way to get them out though, cut up the timber and burn it. I am sure if I took it for scrap I would be a rich man lol. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

What a difference. So much more confidence in tearing everything out. I would reconsider lowering the ceilings and create attic space. In Hungary a lot of people have central heating on wood. The logburners have spirals inside and a circulation pump at the back.The fire heats up the water which is pumped through the system and the radiators. Its very efficient in use. Hope the chimney can be reopened for use. Thx for sharing

Hi, thanks for watching and commenting :-) We love the high roof space, but yes, it does mean we have no attic space though :-( Yes, the range that is here at the moment is a basic model but you can get lots of different sorts with a back boiler to heat water and the radiators. At the moment we are leaning towards oil fires water and central heating but we haven't ruled out a range with a back boiler just yet.

Nah you are right. takes me about 3 hours to make a video. 3-4hours to save and another 2-3 to upload. before I was working id spend a whole day making 4-5 videos every month or so. We were lucky enough to save the old kitchen table, complete with Woodworm eaten feet. It has one odd leg and 3 bad fitting top panels, so that is here for something to put things on for now. Yep, 3-4 hours without procrastinating and god am I good at that, so maybe 5-6 hours lol.

Dawn, you're a BEAST! 💪 And make-up while doing demolition? You are a 👑. If you have to install an ensuite, I'd put it against the far wall, using that window. It would chop up the room a lot less. If you don't need the entire length you could add built in wardrobe/closet. The bedrooms look amazingly different from your original vlogs. Fingers crossed for the fireplaces!

Thank you for sharing your project; with all the conflict going on in the world it's a blessing to be able to follow along as you make progress. Maybe the ensuite can go diagonally opposite the bedroom door and including the end window. That would leave two windows and a decorative fireplace for the bedroom. I assume you will want to keep the fireplace even if its not functional. Youll have fun being interior designers after so much focus on demolition and structural restoration.

Thank you John. Yes, the world is a need of a little love at the moment, sadly I don't think our videos will bring world peace, but we will continue to try :-). Top secret.... The bedroom chimney is also opened up but at this moment we are yet to try it. We are thinking of a small wood stove, for safety and the heat storage they give verses an open coal fire, like the living room. Hiya Jackie It is really funny you should comment and start with the time lapse. It was cut out on purpose but we were talking about you saying how Jackie likes a nice bit of time lapse and it was already planned to have some in there somewhere, just for you :-) Oh we can't wait. So close to the OSB floor being down now and then we will have a fully accessible, safe house to move around in and move into one of the bedrooms. If it were me I would put a bedroom at each end with a bathroom in the middle. Now you could have entryways from both bedrooms or just one entry through the hallway.

Hi, Thank you for watching and commenting. We would need to turn the stairs around to have a bathroom between both the bedooms, so we are torn with.... 1. Both bedrooms have en suite, toilet and wash basin downstairs as it is now 2. One bedroom has en suite, the second has en suite but is also a shared bathroom. 3. Something else, not known yet. I like the idea of having another door on the landing so we will see what happens with the bedrooms.

Hi Perfect sense, thank you. We were thinking about that end for an en suite but are trying not to get to bogged down with layouts yet as we still need to get the OSB down, so close now though. Then there is getting a shower and hot water inside and a kitchen sink. Once that is done, hopefully we can put pen to paper and start drawing some ideas. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

For ease of plumbing, Kitchen, laundry and bathroom downstairs should be on the same side of the house with Ensuite above them. If you put a new doorway at the top of the stairs then the guest room can share the ensuite upstairs. You just have to decide which room upstairs is getting a bathroom with a window based on where the plumbing is to the septic system and incoming water from the catchments. Where the water heater will be and what kind of water heater? How big do you want your Spa Bathroom to be? Bathtub upstairs and shower downstairs or both shower and tub in both bathrooms? I can picture you in the building supply sitting in tubs to test them out. So exciting to be this far along now. I'm seeing daylight through some of the slates, is the roof guy coming to fix the slipped slates or can you do that now?

Yeah we’re with you on that with the plumbing and going with bathrooms and kitchen and laundry all being that side of the house. Not 100% sure with hearing the water at present…Ben has looked at the possibility of a oil fuelled combi boiler which would do both the hot water and radiators, there’s also the option of a different range in the kitchen that has a back boiler could be either solid fuel or oil powered that would do the water and also rads too, just things we are toying with. Again not 100% with the bathrooms, whether to go for baths or just shower en suites. We did ask the builder about the slipped slates…because it’s a hip roof it’s not easy for sticking a ladder up to get to them, so we would need to get either some scaffolding or a cherry picker to access it safely. All the ridge tiles need replacing and that’s what’s caused the slates to slip. Once we get the floor down in the bedroom we can get up on the trestles from inside see if there is anything we can do just to get us through winter to stop the rain coming in.

I am going to say it looks like jute to me. It was used in making string and for weaving into bags, but the way it looks, looks like what I have in my historic camp fire making bag. I have flint, steel, burnt cloth and jute. It catches fire well. But it could be Sisal or hemp or even horse or human hair. I haven’t heard of hair being put in the walls for luck….a shoe, cat, coins, and messages of blessings, but I haven’t seen hair for that. That being said, horse hair, sisal, hemp and jute were all used as chinking, much like what you were doing with wool, but that was a twist and the house is not a log cabin…ok sorry, domestic history is my job so I can go on and on. I would love to say that it might be a lock of a lovers hair hidden…I like that story. By the way, how old were the coin? I would love to see them…I am much to curious sometimes. Yeah do you know it could be jute thinking about it…it looks like it had been purposely tied into a loop like and placed into the panelling. I like the lock of a lovers hair story too! Old romantics aren’t we?! Haha alas I don’t think it is 🙁 I think the oldest coin may have been 1916. I will have to do a video on all my finds one day…spoiler alert….there’s a lot of rusty stuff hahaha! Being curious is a good thing in my book…keeps your brain healthy!

They are just trestles. The higher they go the more the extension bit wobbles. They are more noise than movement. They won't topple even with the biggest wobbles, I tried before I let Dawn up there. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

Well…the coat? Yeah I think we’ve mentioned it before somewhere but not sure and wouldn’t have a clue where lol so don’t worry about missing it, anyway….the coat stayed up for sentimental reasons really. It was hung there when we viewed the house and we later learn that this was the Grannies room of the previous owners. The Grannie and her husband were the ones that had the house built and it just seemed wrong and sad to take it down if you know what I mean? Sadly it did have to come down in the end with all that had to be removed in that part of that room. I put it through the washing machine with the intention of keeping it somewhere but it did not fair very well, I think the moths had eaten a fair bit of it. 😔

@@thecornerhouseproject no problem. Those chimneys you have would u not consider getting rid of them bar one that serves the living room. Back in the day fires were needed in bed rooms but now they just suck heat out of the house unless u have wood burners fitted.

It is the wood burner we are considering doing, one for the heat aspect and two for safety. The chimneys certainly have a good suck on them. The bedroom one might get a pillow up it until either a fire is lit or a stove gets fitted hahaha,

It will be in the ceilings for sure and around the edges of the OSB keeping the heat in the room below and the bedroom. The walls will remain the lime plastered walls they are now. We are going to go a winter and see how cold it gets before making any decisions on boarding the walls with something.

Nooooooo, the builder managed to remove the block ,so many large stones, and as a bonus he managed to unblock the bedroom above... but that is a secret so don't tell anyone until the video gets uploaded ;-)

Why take the ceiling down??!!

We had to take the ceiling down for a few reasons, one being possible woodworm and damp in the timbers of the roof. It lets us see if there is anywhere letting in the rain. We also needed the chimney uncapping and that had to be done from inside the house as concrete and stones had been poured down the chimney and the builder couldn’t remove them from outside on the roof, although he did try very hard! Another reason is we needed some form of insulation in the roof space. Most of the lime torching has deteriorated and fallen, which also leaves the slates vulnerable to movement and then water ingress. So all in all we didn’t have a lot of choice.
