Cutting, Fitting and Fixing the OSB in our Stone Irish Farmhouse

Now that the joists in the kitchen are all replaced it is time to finally cut, fit and fix the OSB in place in the bedroom as our "temporary" flooring. We aren't the fastest at things like this so it did take a while. Don't worry, there is plenty of time lapse footage.

Oh yes I love a ramble…it’s made me realise, doing these videos, that I chat quite a lot! 😂 but I’m glad you like it though because I’m sure I won’t ever stop loving a good ramble! It’s so nice to be able to walk around in the room and not have to be aware of any holes you might fall through!

Staggering the OSB with the 8 ft dimension perpendicular to the joists is definitely the proper method. In new construction the noggins will typically be spaced 4 ft apart to support the edge of the OSB and to provide something to drive the screws into. Construction adhesive is also used to help elimate squeaky floors. It's good to have a multi purpose face as long as it's mostly a happy face. Many years ago I had a boss tell me that the face you have in your early 50s is the face you will be stuck with for the rest of your life so try to keep smiling. 😊

Thanks for commenting as always :) I only said to Dawn the other night, lay in bed, looking up at the bottom of the joists that with hindsight, I should have made sure the noggins lined up with the edge of the OSB and I will do for the living room ceiling.... so with that said, that is my plan. Being the "temporary" floor, we didn't want to use glue for ease of lifting it all again. What we have found for squeak though is a sheep's wool strip which sits on top of the joists and below the flooring. No doubt other products are available for this but the sheep's wool works well in lime houses due to it's ability to hold and release moisture. I was once described as having an angry default face which I took as a compliment, not sure they meant it that way though, but I took the good from the comment hahaha.

Your not doing a bad job for first timers. The one thing that is worrying are the wiring under the door threshold, it needs to be protected from abrasion and can’t be pinched between the OSB and joists or the wall.

@dcimedic Thank you! 😊 The wiring will be going shortly as its the original wiring in the house and not up to spec but Ben has 12v from the solar running through it at present just to give us a some light while we wait for the electrician to come and rewire the house. Fingers crossed it will be gone soon 😊

Ideally you want all the boards to be going the same direction and stagger the edges. Same when you get to the drywall if you’re going to do frame and drywall walls. Housework is overrated, look at our place hahaha. Only a 7? I had been practicing that for hours before filming too :-) Thank you for saying that, sometimes we don't always get the best footage or maybe the video style some people like to watch but we always like to try and think of what we watch and how we feel we are part of it when watching, so knowing you feel part of it is nice to know.

Ahhhh ye bloody legends :) It made our lunch to hear you both chatting at our channel. Such kind words too, sure laughing is the only way to get thru these projects! We are a few months ahead, but it seems your videos are fairly well timed for ours... I have a pallet of OSB outside to do the upstairs and that reference to your gazebo you made.... Just started to watch and first thought that came up when you said was removing th moldy wood and attic was:"lower the bedroom ceiling and create 3 extra spaces on the Attic with 3 Velux windows at the backside of the roof" the ceiling in the blue room upstairs is high enough as I see the space above the entrydoor. Another staircase spiral or with 90° angle would fit in easily. 3 huge light spaces on the attic. That would be amazing

would highly suggest doing all your electrics and plumbing surface job in old buildings like this . saved me a fortune and its how it was traditionally done in lreland for decades.

The minute I was saying to myself, You two should make a template and BAM out came a cardboard piece. Then I was, hm you may need to build up the concrete at the threshold, and BAM you place a piece of wood bracing…which was a much simpler remedy. Love the time lapse and love a good Coke break. Did a great job on that ivy too. Can’t wait till the next vid.

I think you should make that room your master suite with an ensuite bathroom. If you split into two rooms, you can bust a doorway on the other side of the fireplace for a door to the second bedroom.

Both of those options have been things we have thought about. Ben especially likes the idea of putting a new doorway on the landing. We shall see as time goes on …what becomes of the rooms 😂

I have been mainly a delivery driver and Ben has always worked in IT, computer engineer, web designer, data analyst. lol so yeah….nothing that would prepare us for what we are doing now…but we’ve always been pretty self sufficient when it comes to fixing things around the house and not having people in to do it, so I think that’s helped prepare us for this.

U need a 10 mm gap between the floor boards and the wall for expansion. The skirting hides the 10mm gap when fitted. And there are 2 x 8 boards that interlock for floors that are tested.and can be glued together.

Yes, the narrow sheets of tongue & groove OSB are really handy for doing floors!

Thanks for commenting, there are lots of 10mm gaps around the room and not to many places where it actually touches the stone work due to the inconstant nature of the building. Being only a "temporary" flooring, we will ensure when we lay the real floorboards that the expansion gap is present all around.

@@thecornerhouseproject for temporary it’s fine. For my floors I did the 2 x 8 ft sheets as the interlink.I used this floor as the build progressed and then I glue engineered oak boards on top of it. Turned out a great job. It’s all hard work but u have too keep going

Oooh! What great-looking flat, even joists! Seems almost like a shame to cover them up- unless, of course, you're covering them with nicely fitted OSB. 😊 BTW, have you guys seen the trick where you put an anchor bolt/wall plug into a masonry wall; & then you can put a screw in through a cable tie, & use the cable tie to hold things like electrical cords? If you can find them, there are also plastic anchors made just for holding cable ties.

Hi and thank you for watching and commenting :-) We were really surprised with how flat it all looks without bump from noggins (only 2 places) and the fact the floor isn't actually level.... and the fact it being our first time doing it. Dawn always worries that she takes too long doing things but because of her meticulous, won't be beaten nature means that everything fits perfectly. Yeah we have seen that cable tie thing but fingers crossed it won't be much longer before those electric cables come out and mains cable goes in..... fingers crossed though!

Will you be using Insulated Plasterboard on walls with mushrooms fixing,

For the time being we won’t be insulating the walls other than repairing the lime plaster and we will see how we go with the cold this winter and then if maybe it’s not getting as warm as it should, we will look at wall insulation but I would imagine we would probably go for something like hemp or wood fibre boards, not 100% sure just but we will see how we get on. 😊

I know! How cool is that eh? We’re chuffed to bits with how many people watch and have subscribed. Blows our mind to be honest. 😁 The living room ceiling is next, need to get both floors safe and then we get to do all the fun bits once that’s done! So excited to get on with everything…so close to having a whole house safe and useable! Can’t wait! Yeah gazebo hung on well to be fair but just couldn’t hang on any longer. Yes luckily we everything was all in the plastic crates under the benches so saved it really. Shower still outside at present but fingers crossed once the floors are done that will be a next on the list thing 😂

@@thecornerhouseproject I'd be getting myself a small collapsible tub to use in the kitchen or bathroom - too cold outside in the am and pm here to shower al fresco lol. the Gazebo did well, it would have cost a lot more to rent a portable storage unit. We need to get you up to 10K subs so you can make some money from your video's. At least enough to pay for a pampered weekend in a luxury hotel for all the filming and editing you have both done.
