Sounds really good when the gain was on this setting @ 3:20. Could probably be a good idea to stack it with a distortion pedal for some huge solo lead lines. Excellent video as usual!

I use a crayon and it’s great… runs into compressor which is always on, and sometimes I kick on a tube screamer before it for a crunchy lead sound

I love this pedal. I use it mainly as a bass boost. TS808 for OD and a Boss DS-1W for distortion. I also have a EHX Lizard Queen octave fuzz and just added a Chicago Stompworks Black Fudge Fuzz.

Sounds like you've got all bases covered there. Did you hear they have just released a lizard king, which is the queen but with a blend and toggle for different octave modes?

I have the Hot Wax which has this circuit and a Hot Tubes, it is pretty cool.

I've not tried the hot tubes, what kind of circuit is that? I've heard that this pedal is great being pushed by another so that makes sense 👍

@@BudgetPedalChap The Hot Tubes is a CMOS overdrive like the Way Huge Red Llama. EHX puts the Crayon in front of the Hot Tubes. The Hot Tubes reacts more like an amp in a box, good going into a clean amp.

I found a used Crayon on Reverb and got a great deal ($44 US) because the seller needed to unload a bunch of gear quickly to raise cash. Lucky me! Hopefully it's an adequate replacement for my Caline Orange Burst. I just realized it doesn't have a grounded enclosure and was the cause of the noise in my signal I could never track down. If it doesn't work out the Orange Burst going to get some surgery from the soldering iron.

@@onlyusernameleft2 yeah I think this one is in a similar enough ball park that it should get you there. I didn't get any grounding issues with the orange burst I've got, maybe a manufacture fault at some point?

@BudgetPedalChap I have a script Orange Burst, the surface mount version with updated art and the Gokko Sonicfuel which is an OEM script Orange Burst. None have earthing from the PCB to the enclosure and hum when the casing is touched. The ones with the through hole circuit aren't as bad but all of mine are affected to some degree.

Actually the Crayon Electro harmonix is ​​based on the Xotic BB preamp circuit but with some modifications to the circuit which makes it slightly clearer and with its own personality. Having it, I confirm the goodness of this pedal in my opinion one of the best ever in terms of value for money. I put it next to my Boss Bd-2Waza Craft made in Japan and I assure you that it looks good at all, on the contrary it allows me to have a slightly more "British" sound. Needless to make comparisons with boss sd-1 type pedals: the Crayon is a full range overdrive and doesn't cut your lowend like the boss or the tubescreamer. A greeting!

I randomly skipped back and forward through the recording and found that sonically very little had changed. Not enough to think buying this would please me by seving its apparent duty. There is very little valence in its effect. It looks nice though. I want a better product

I've only been looking a short while for OD and distortion and am by no means an expert. I like the sonic character of the pedal but I didn't see that the pots were sensitive (enough for me and my budget ) in their response to their relative position. So I guess I wonder why the designer included eq control. Maybe I should consider OD pedals more as presets for tone?

I'm actually really curious about overdrive as I've just started playing again after about 20 years. When I was a kid I just had the drive on my amp which was terrible and lacked any control. I basically always played clean

@@mr-iz8cx usually with drive pedals, people get a setting they like and keep it there. Like you say, almost like a preset. Pairing a drive with an EQ pedal can really allow you to get some wildly different tones out of one drive box. Hope that helps 👍
