I'm getting asked how to pick between device and pharma when it coes to family life. This is all my opionion, but a lot has to do with what kind of help do you have at home? Are you in the "traditional relationship" man brings home the bacon so woman stays at home rearing the children, or are you in a "woke" relationship where your spouse is also successful and both of you want to be equal partners in work as well as family? I personally think work/life balance is a crucial factor when picking a career. Children are only children for their first 4 years. After that they then begin school and fall into the same daily routine you are in as an adult. Why not try to be there for them as much as you can during those crucial first few years. IMO i would go pharma just because of the work/life balance. Just be great at what you do and you can go and get a job in Device if you really want it.

Pierre, I watched your video about Stryker and I’m confused?! I’m in Service here at Stryker and made 70k this year. My Sales rep’ made 250k last year. How’d you only make 80k in lower extremity? Why’d you earn so little?

Bro I’m on the same wavelength as you. I took that up with the director at the end of the year after hitting quota. He said that’s standard for “1st years”. I thought it was ridiculous considering selling uniforms I made more working less. So when I negotiated for my year 2 raise they said what I was asking for, which was a plan that would let me hit $115k, was too high for a 2nd year. Idk if it has to do with my geography being Austin or what, but the rep that backfilled me was in the same boat till about year 3-4. Another rep I know near by was same issue. 3yrs in and only making around $115-125. Who is your sales rep and or what division and year are they in? Is this verbal or they willing to produce a W2? I know my senior rep was making between $180-200k hitting quota so I believe its possible, but that was a 10+ year partner. I appreciate the comment. Seriously. I don’t appreciate the lack of pay transparency at Stryker. Idk if it has changed since I left, but where I am at now each year they give you a letter showing you where you fall in comparison to everyone in your division.

@@PierrePacini Wow! That blows my mind! My rep showed me paystubs before and it was legit. My division is Stryker Sustainability and my rep’ has almost the whole SE territory in PA. It’s a 3 million dollar territory. Stryker Sustainability has a great work/ life too because the Associate ( Me) is out there serving the accounts and he manages the sales with supply chain and corporate.

It looks like you are in a good spot, though! The culture here has definitely changed at Stryker.

That’s why. That devision if you good is solid. I didn’t know much about the different roles and divisions while I was there. Another I head is great is surgical technologies, ems (I think is another), and OR equipment. All of those seem to pay really well for great W/L balance. Wish I knew a while ago. But yeah man I’ve talked with trauma guys 3yrs in, extremities, sports med all just hitting around 120ish. Barely the 150ish. Bustin ass.

That’s good. Hopefully it continues to evolve for the better. I love a type A win mentality and let’s kill it collectively, but pushing people too hard for too long causes burnout. If someone can make more or equal for less time working you’d really just have to love what you do to not consider the change. I’ll be back one day haha

Appreciate your perspective, this is extremely helpful. About the school bus pick ups 😂, with the bus driver shortages, bus drivers are stretched and forced to do multiple pick ups for multiple grade levels, so school times either start super early (for higher grades) and later for elementary. My high schooler starts school at 7:15, middle schooler starts at 7:45, and my elementary kid starts at 8:40 🥴😫. Pick up is even crazier, so pharmaceutical sales is absolutely for me.

Good man! And great video! I just wrapped up 2 years of medical school & have had a halt come to my journey. I am a Single mom with 3 boys. Watching your videos because I am trying to figure out my next move, am interested in sales, & wasn't sure which one if these routes to pursue. I need something lucrative of course, but still allows me to be a parent. Pharm sales sounds like it may be my best choice for now. Maybe after a couple of years, I could move over to medical device. Your videos are so very helpful. ⚘️

There is a lot of opportunity in both fields. Just work/life will always be better in Pharma/diagnostic compared to device/surgical, but both can be managed if your team is understanding and a everyone has a solid set of expectations. I just like pharma/diag more for family life because most roles are very much on your own with your “team” covering other territories and you aren’t sharing your territory with another person. Good luck! Reach out any time.

Thank you for this video I start a medical sales college and quickly decided I could not do this with two young children. I love having to drop. How do I see this prior to registering for class? I would’ve been a different route. Great video.

is it difficult to switch back and forth between the two industries? for example, if you had experience in one realm (med devices) is your experience relevant in the Pharma sales world?

From your perspective why do people talk so negatively about Pharmaceutical sales? And in the same sense make it seem like medical device Sales is the best.
@PierrePacini
@PierrePacini 6 ай бұрын
I’ll try to answer this as simply as possible: People perceive pharma to be lower status bc they believe it isn’t sales (in most roles you don’t have to get a PO) and they believe we are glorified caterers bc most of the time we can only get in front of providers by having a breakfast/lunch/snack with their office. Device is put on a pedestal bc “they” work in the OR. Their job is more stressful and they wear it like a badge of honor. In my humble opinion: device is great for singles and pharma is great for families/work:life balance

I almost believed that med device was better than Pharma myself. I think if I take the time and run the numbers - hours worked vs salary - I’m not sure if med device makes as much as it is perceived. Nonetheless, your honesty is a breath of fresh air!

I want to say it definitely depends on life situation, imo. And personally I haven’t met many that make consistently over $175k whereas in pharma I know hundreds that make that as a salary if not more. Thanks for the support and comment! If you see an opening at Novartis hmu first and let’s chat so I can refer you in.
