I purchase the SS2 heater a few weeks ago. It works well inside my 24' insulated snowmobile trailer. the one issue I had was the supplied cord to power the heater using a 12-volt battery would not work. I tested everything and finally realized the 12v battery power cord was wired wrong internally. I had to connect the black wire to the positive terminal and the red wire negative terminal to the power the heater up. I have reached out to my supplier and Hcalory for a replacement cord.

Probably easiest to just fix the cord, seems like a lot of people have had that issue lately so there is no guarantee that a new cord won’t be wrong too.

You did a great job reviewing this heater. One question and comment put together for you to comment on. Does the cold air intake ( room air return ) suck air from inside the housing or is it sealed to the housing and suck air from the outside? The reason I ask is if it pulls air from inside the box and if you ever spilled fuel while refueling, you would definitely have that smell in your tent. ( My pet peeve is diesel fuel smell)
@TrailTraveler
@TrailTraveler 5 ай бұрын
I 3D printed a sleeve to go between the heater and the case to eliminate pulling air from inside the case for this reason as well as to provide more suction. I will be covering this in an upcoming video.

It just depends on what you are looking for. None of them are perfect in this price range, but it is still our favorite for the positive things, but I did do a handful of mods to make it fit my needs better.

Looks like those rivets could be replaced by using bolts and rivnuts. You would install the rivnuts to the sheetmetal sides, and for extra convenience you could use bolts with thumbscrews to fasten the lower part. Edit: Also I do believe these do not come with any fuel filter installed from the factory, as seen in other videos on YT where they disassemble these to swap out the green flexible fuel line with some solid fuel line.
@TrailTraveler
@TrailTraveler 4 ай бұрын
If you watch this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqGxcoqZYtCasLs&) you can see I drilled out the rivets and used rivnuts and added sound proofing and other mods. I had a good conversation with a Webasto engineer who said there is no reason to swap out the green fuel line. There is almost no pressure created by the pump, so the theory that the green line will cause problems is just a myth.

@@TrailTravelerHave you had experience with the Wippro 5kw-8kw all in one diesel heater. Some other reviews on YT praise this one for a super quiet pump. Wondering how loud this SS2 is vs Wippro. I am looking for a quiet unit but the SS2 has the Bluetooth app control which Wippro does not.

You've given the most thorough review I've seen. You mentioned the Bluetti B55 and AC70. Do either of those battery packs run the SS2? I'll be using the unit ice fishing and need a portable battery that will run it
@TrailTraveler
@TrailTraveler 4 ай бұрын
We have run it on both the EB55 and AC70 without any issues. Which unit is best is going to depend on how long you need to run it for without being able to recharge it. The EB55 could probably go 20 hours. If you had even 100w solar panels, you would probably never run out of power.

Hi. Great review....thank you. One question....when you are using the heater while camping presumably you run it off a battery. How much electricity does the heater consume; how large of a battery do you need. I'm a bit of a novice and appreciate the help.
@TrailTraveler
@TrailTraveler 5 ай бұрын
We have both a Bluetti EB55 and AC70. When running on a medium setting, the heater will pull about 30-35 watts. I recommend the AC70 (768wh) which should run it for two nights without recharging.

I actually did another modification, I purchased a 4” to 3” reducer from home depot, it tapers so I cut the 3” off at roughly 3-1/4” diameter then slid over the the output side, I put a couple screws to hold it into plastic collar along with high heat tape, I then put a 4” T to have 2 source of heat, 1 heats tent the other goes into a small stand up closet to dry hunting gear

For camping the big challenge with these heaters is rain. There is no way you could leave this out in anything but very light rain. Looking at the design I think it would be difficult to rain proof that box so the only solution is to construct some sort of roof arrangement to go over it - be interested if anybody has any ideas -Keeping the hot exhaust away from anything would be tough
@TrailTraveler
@TrailTraveler 3 ай бұрын
Fortunately for us, I can put everything underneath our trailer to keep it out of the rain. The only things I would be concerned of with this particular unit is the controller (you could seal that compartment pretty easily) and the power cord connector (You would probably need to make it a permanent connection to eliminate a connector and seal that up properly)

Did they seriously use an IEC 60320 C15/C16 for 12-volt DC power? I couldn't believe it so I checked their website and there's a very clear photo of it. They seem to use a dometic-type plug for some of their stuff, but this one is clearly an IEC.. I don't even have words for how dangerous that is. What could they have been thinking?
@TrailTraveler

That is not the plug on mine. Mine is the same plug as my Dometic and ICECO fridges.

The label on the AC/DC block charger reads for Indoor use only. Does this mean this unit is not able to be placed outside to vent hot air into a tent for camping?

The heater and the power supply are not waterproof, so as long as you can protect it from the elements, you are fine.

Most videos I see this heater used in are using 3" duct hose. You mentioned using a 4" hose on a different brand heater, because of an overheating code, instead of the 3". Have you tried this heater with 3" or are you just going to stick with your 4" hose? I'm considering this heater but can't make up my mind on which hose size to get.
@TrailTraveler
@TrailTraveler 5 ай бұрын
A 3” hose is fine if you are only going a few feet. Pushing the air up to a roof top tent in a 3” causes the heater to overheat. So for now, I use the 4” from heater to tent and the 3” from tent to the cold side of the heater.

Is the Bluetooth app worth it? There is another manufacture, by Lf bros. They don’t have a Bluetooth app, but everything looks to be a bit better.

For me, I like the app. With just the remote, you don't know what setting it is on or what the status of the system is. If the system throws an error code, the app tells you what it is, which can make troubleshooting easier.

Well...not a single one of them did, so there is that. I did a complete review of the unit "as you receive it from the factory" - Oddly, Hcalory said it was the best diesel heater review they have ever seen.. My mods to it are not part of a "product review" and should be separate from an "straight out of the box" review. But since we have mentioned "some creators", almost all them simply raved about what an amazing unit it is and how quiet it is. My review told Hcalory 4 different things they could do to improve it, and the video was sent to their product development team.
