@20:20 -- remember also that the DJI is LHCP and most other gear uses RHCP so you'll get a cross-polarisation loss with a DJI antenna on the VTX and a regular antenna on the ground-station.

Great to see you do a fair and accurate review, based on my month of Shark Byte flying on my HDO2 goggles...its quite good, and latency and signal return after a complete loss is something to be chuffed about (excited), better VTX's and larger sensored MIPI CIS-2 interface Cameras (a bigger deal than most realise because there are many HD boards already in use in manufacturing that require low latency) new basic hardware will only improve the overall image quality greatly with this system in the near future.

Great video but I have 3 questions. This board is now available Fat Shark Shark Byte VTX (TX5S.1)1st Do I need a special antennas that goes to the board? 2nd Do you get the power cable for the goggles when purchasing the Fat Shark Shark Byte Receiver (RX5.1) 3rd I know the DJI are really good, but the cost is double, would you really buys these ? Cheers I have been flying for over 4yrs and generally I fly freestyle

One thing all of you forget, especially with the remote I'd ruling, sharkbyte has a 25X25 vtx available meaning you can make a whoop to 4s twig that can come under the 250g weight limit. I'm thinking of going sharkbyte for the reason alone.

Great review as others have mentioned! Just got my whoop style vtx’s in. Love the form factor and video quality. 1 negative I would like to add. No balance lead for your goggle fan on the power cord. What a bummer/oversight by fatshark.

How do you connect the camera cable to the vtx? I've got big fingers and I'm stuck. I don't want to use little pliers because I need to be able to feel that "click" when it seats. Everyone glossed over this little task... :)
@jackmaddox49603 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I missed it, a lot of distractions while watching, but one thing I've noticed many reviewers DON'T mention is the price compared to DJI... If you've got some decent goggles, it's way cheaper to get into digital FPV with this versus DJI. Also it's from a company that has been an active part of the FPV community basically from the beginning, and it lets others contribute to it's evolution, unlike DJI. But the main thing...DIGITAL WHOOP..!!! Who hasn't imagined how cool it would be to have digital video in a whoop? I was fantasizing about it almost from the day I got into FPV, and when the smaller single-board 'air unit' becomes available, I'm gonna buy a bunch and put them in ALL of my quads..!

The game changer for me is that the Shark Byte system has eight channels whereas DJI has only two. Furthermore the DJI goggles transmit a signal which interferes with analog users nearby (I was blasted out of the air this morning when another pilot turned-on his DJI system) I believe that the Shark Byte system is compatible with analog and that there is close compatibility with the analogue Race band frequencies. I want to fly with my mates so I will buy the Shark Byte. DJI is antisocial.
@MadRC3 жыл бұрын
DJI is 8 channels in FCC normal mode. It’s only reduced in channel when you turn on HQ 50Mbps mode. If you have 2 that would be in CE as it should be 4 in FCC with 50Mbps. The 50Mbps mode is much higher bandwith and quality than SB. You can fly on normal mode in FCC with 8 channel the same as shark byte.
@stephenmutch40343 жыл бұрын
@@MadRC Thanks for the clarification. Please accept my apology. I obviously need to speak with our DJI pilot about using SB (and 200 mW like the rest of us) when analogue pilots are flying.

So I use fat shark box goggles that have an hdmi input. I’m not an fpv addict but would like better video. This seems then like a good option as $800 for the dji is just not worth it since I only do fpv on occasion. Plus, this one appears like it’s going to have some small transmitter options which is of great interest.

Why would you call the VTX "air unit"?
@MadRC3 жыл бұрын
It’s been the standard name for the digital models as they are more than a VTX, they handle two way telemetry, RC control as well. VTX is a too simplistic term now for it.

Good review. The DJI goggle dvr is far far better than the SByte. If you put the 50 mbits and you don't make a penetrating flight , you will have a very good quality video(not stabilized) without glitch. Not everybody put gopro on his quad. One other thing is the reliability. DJI Vtx is rock solid, not the case of the SByte Vtx.
@kubanishku3 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind you are comparing a new system with a year+ old dji system, there was no 50mbit at launch. Also open source vs closed source is a big opportunity (think betaflight, coming from clean flight, etc all got better via community support and iteration.
@PeterPetermann3 жыл бұрын
@@kubanishku None of the two is opensource.
@jmcjmc55873 жыл бұрын
@@kubanishku I don't think the sharkbyte will catch up the DJI. Sharkbyte have not the tech inside for fighting DJI. You will still have this continuous break up on SB. DJI have bidirectional data. Which is a big improvement for signal quality. You can't fix that with firmware. The air unit have two antenna(this make a big difference in nature,forest) with 1080p 60fps record. This is more than enough, 99% of video we produce is very basic video. The air unit is like a gopro 5 without stabilization, there's comparating video on youtube. You can't fix that with firmware. I have buy 2 air unit at the launch and is still work. SB have a problem with reliability of the vtx. I' m still interested of buying a sharkbyte but only in a compact all in one goggle solution. I don't like this module. It's big.
@klaviantsigetur30273 жыл бұрын
50 mbit DJI eats 4 channels. When SB will be consuming 4 channels then you can fairly compare the quality.
@klaviantsigetur30273 жыл бұрын
@@jmcjmc5587 While bi-directional data can improve quality (receiver asking for pixel area resend) it also increases latency. There is no reason why SB cannot at a later point release a version with quality mode which will do the "bi-directional self-healing" technique plus 4 channel 50 Mbit transmission. SB is not open-source, but we can call it open. There will be multiple companies making cameras and VTX, which will help things move faster. I'm betting SB will make a bigger improvement in 1 year than DJI did in that time.

Best system of all had been for me the DJI Goggles Racing edition for a simple reason: Used it for 2 years and still get more than I had paid for ! Why could that happen at least in central europe ? Now that the big "wanna get ridd off my Mavic 2" move had finally started (all seem to go for Air 2 ... until they might realize that in gusty winds the Mavic 2 is superior and that a optical zoom is also the best for roof and house inspections too) there are a lot of used Mavic 2 buyers wanting to get fpv access and then they have 2 solutions: * the more outdated white DJI goggles of the first edition and * the red oneor better known as the racing edition That has also to do with the house inspections and engineers that need footage for their investigation of a roof and so on where the Goggles are king cause they help to avoid a second flight later which they tend to need after watching or reviewing the first footaga in the office. Wearing goggles offers a far better view than any 13 inch tablet can proivde. Therefore the demand has been growing cause these engineers stumble into the drones for their business after the price has dropped to half of the past for good used ones. Afterwards they slowly get behind that dji goggles can streamline their work a lot and that lead to a demand leap and higher prices at least in central europe cause the engineers save a lot of time cause roof inspections had caused a lot of new "post review" questions that could have been answered if they had seen the details before in goggles. If you check ebay prices of used ones carefully you see auctions going up to 450€ - 500€ recently. I guess that this is happening not only in mainland europe cause the guy that purchased the last one was from soutern europe cause I had asked the seller what had happened. Astonishing prices cause I had paid for mine with a coupon a lot less back then in 2018. Ian, do not forget what treasure on your shelf in the background is laying ...
