I saw this film when it first showed in the theatres. Peter Weir opened my eyes to what a real film could be. I still think it's one of the best movies ever made, and Weir remains my favourite director of all time.

It portrays a very important period of World history that is also overlooked. Next time someone goes to Bali, it is good to remember those beaches were once killing camps, 1965/1966. As General Sarwo Eddhie once said, they “proudly killed 3 million”. The events that led to those killings are portrayed in the film. Including the telegram about the weapons for the Indonesian communists. The film was taken in the Philippines, still too dangerous to do it in Indonesia in the 1980’s.

Such an underrated, overlooked movie. I remember seeing it in theaters when I was 14 with my dad. I was completely caught up in the story and LOVED the soundtrack. Sadly, this movie (as well as Weir's other films like "Mosquito Coast" and "Witness") would probably never get made today. The great thing about the early 80s was the rollover from the 70s, which, in my opinion, was probably the greatest era for American cinema.

People in today’s era don’t know good cinema anymore. I kind of blame big companies like Disney for bringing way too many superhero and Star Wars movies. These interconnected universe of movies flooded the market and politics leaked into most of them. This era of cinema was the most interesting and creative. Today there’s nothing being created anymore.

Superb 1983 film, although the ease with which he managed to board that 2pm plane beggars belief. The chemistry between Mel and Sigourney is explosive and Linda Hunt steals the show (and wins an Oscar) as Billy Kwan. This Vangelis leitmotif is magnificent. He had initially planned to use it for the opening sequence of Chariots of Fire (1981) then changed the music to the classic piece we know today.

I think the odds were against him being able to get on that plane, and he knew it. He was terrified, but knew he had to appear calm in order to stand a chance of boarding. That was what made the scene so tense. A great film.
