#Oddie November 13th. I am born on November 13th year 1990 in Serbia ( ex Tito's Yugoslavia, Balkan peninsula, Europe ). Catherine was an amazingly strong girl/young woman. Her attacker was a monster. Her husband was a coward. I think that Catherine didn't bond with 1st kid because Catherine's mother didn't give Catherine's baby Catherine in her arms.

She could have saved alot of time and money and just used the eye drops in the tea. No fuss....but it would ruion his day. She could have said "bye" and walked away. This is YT so we must remember their 'guidelines' and all that. My 'x' very abusive hubby is very lucky that I believe in God. He never wanted a wife just kids. If I'd of taken (our) my kids and just left he'd of killed all of us. That was the kind of flake guys like him are, the if they can't have the 'kids' no one will. So I'll see soon if bozzo divorced me or not soon as I'm going to be trying to get my social security benefits soon & will mention I was married blah, blah, blah and see what turns up. Should be interesting. He is (or was?) 12 yrs older than me, so who knows if he's still around, but I wouldn't dout it, only the good die young eh? Or so it's said. I believe in God and just read my Bible alot. We hopefully learn from our misstakes right?

There's such a thing called "Natural Justice." In assaulting and impregnating his niece the uncle effectively ended her life. The stigma in those days made her a social outcast. This dirty deed followed her and casted a stain on her character. As the victim she suffered more than the perpetrator throughout life. I think she was totally vindicated in her actions as she held the sympathy of the public and eventually the law court too.

Because Catherine was a child, the mother was responsible for doing the right thing for her child. But she placed her own reputation and need for money above her child's welfare and repeatedly did the wrong thing. Letting Fino back into their home, and giving the baby away, and the lies about his death and hidden adoption. The mother could not be trusted any longer. I bet she profited from the adoption.

There was so much happening to this poor girl! Defiled and traumatized by someone she was supposed to trust, to the point that he impregnated her through that, and also broke her doll. Then her mother letting him back into the home (never mind that she kicked him out yet again later, he should never have been allowed back) and then Catherine's own husband throwing her out into the street while she was pregnant for fear of shame and scandal. Who wouldn't be at least a little unhinged after being failed by their family and by their own husband? Her mother never even reported what that man did to her daughter because she was ashamed and afraid of being judged by her neighbors. Honestly, Catherine should never have had to be in that situation where she felt she had to buy a gun and kill the man who did that to her. Yeah, she committed a crime, a very serious one, but I think the bigger crimes were perpetrated upon her and no one stopped it, no one helped her. They all failed her. No wonder the judge made it a part of his judgement that Catherine should not go near her mother's home, because she did three truly terrible things that a mother should never do: 1) She never reported what that man did to Catherine. 2) She let the man back into her home. 3) She never properly backed Catherine, her own daughter, when she needed her mother the most.

I'm so happy for her! I'm glad she was able to get rid of that evil man, and that she was able to live such a happy life in the end. Also I bet the mom wasn't too supportive of her daughter throughout her life, like how she never reported the crime to the police when it happened due to fear of scandal rather than helping her daughter (she did the bare minimum of kicking him out and getting rid of the baby). Also maybe she was still living in the same home where it happened, so it could be even more triggering for Catherine to visit her mother's house. But that's just speculation! Thank you for telling her story, I'd never heard about it before. Leave it to Oddity to learn about new stories!

So wonderfully portrayed. Thank you. I found this article that helped me understand this case. It read quote "Because he believed a first or second degree murder conviction impossible, Judge James M. Barrett in Bronx County Court yesterday accepted a plea of guilty of manslaughter in the first degree from Catherine Denino, 16-year-old slayer of Luigi Fino." She was only 16 years old when this crime of rape happened, therefore the mother did not report the crime of her minor child and did allow the man back into Catherine's life for the sake of the child conceived. but nevertheless, her daughter was being faced again with her perpetrator, causing Catherine to feel unprotected and vulnerable. Her husband sent her out and also abandoned her and Catherine probably only knew she had to protect herself. Everyone's honor was being addressed, all except Catherine's honor which she defended by her own actions. She even tried to take her life in despair. That alone gives you an idea of her hopelessness.

This was a sad and maddening case. I really think if her mother had handled things the way she should have from the beginning then the rest of this story may not have happened. Fino must have been even sicker than most; why would he return to blackmail her? He had gotten away with his crime. Also, It is good that her husband came around but I feel he was wrong for mistreating her for something she had no control over.

"All's well that ends well for slayer of betrayer" is my new favorite headline! I love it... This poor woman has been through some stuff. I love that her first known words post gunshot were "he broke my doll". Sounds like a movie line. As for justice, I think the court got it right. I don't know what to call it exactly, but it's like a cousin of self defense. She wasn't in immediate danger but clearly the guy wasn't done messing with her. He got what he deserved and I think she did too. She got off with mild restrictions. Honestly, I might have just acquitted her, knowing she was not going into a life of crime. It was obviously a one time thing. Times were different back then too, so it's hard to say. Anyway, thanks for another awesome story I had never heard of before! I love that you cover these. As always, Ofdie Beau, superlative. Know that sexual assault is a deeply violating and traumatic experience for victims. Back then, the cultural factors of Italy were very much against providing comfort and support for girls and women who were hurt in this way. It was seen as the victims' fault, due to their supposed inappropriate conduct that, somehow, drew a rapist to do this. Madness, as we now know. In this one case, I am glad that this woman was freed, was able to continue her marriage (though her husband had been a complete jerk), and live her life. I hope she had a good life, and is now at peace. So very well done, our Oddie!

Unfortunately these things still happen. Almost 40 years ago I was 15 years old and raped and as a result pregnant. Because of my family’s standing in the church I thought it would be better to marry than to be single with a baby. Bad decision. The church still looked down on me, people still talked behind my back and even people I thought were my friends weren’t really. Lesson learned. When you try to right a wrong , even if it wasn’t your fault, leave it to God.

I am fully in favor of victims exacting revenge when the courts and society does not punish the offender. Who knows how many other women he attacked and got away with because they were too ashamed to come forward. The blackmail attempt was definitely what put her over the edge, and he deserved his fate. Her husband deserved a kick in the coattails as well for throwing her out. At least she was able to go on to have something like a happy life afterwards.

A girl I worked with years ago told me her mother said that in the old times over in Sicily the women would get together and go out with knives, find the rapist, cut off the offending member and stuff it in his mouth and sew it shut. She didn’t say what the men in the village thought of this…

Such a powerful statement. I have washed with blood the stain upon our honor . The most Justifiable homicide I've ever heard of . I do agree with you on her husband being such a milquetoast about it . I'm glad that he came around and made her happy though . I wonder what the story behind her mother was because I too was quite shocked that the judge ordered her not to go around her . As always a very well presented story , thank you

I think the judge ordered Catherine to stay away from her mother and her mother's home because he feared she might in an unhinged state of mind, kill her mom too, and then there would be no mercy for her and no chance of a new and better life for her and her 2nd child.

Very nicely done as always Oddie. At a time when society routinely blamed the woman (or girl), for her own “dishonour” there was little she could do for herself. She did try to put it behind her, and start a new life with Rocco. Sadly, he was more concerned about his Brother’s opinion than about the woman he professed to love…that seems to have been a theme in her life, as her Mother did the same. To let her be victimized again and again by her rapist was I’ll done. I can understand her taking the course she did. He had already had his way with her unpunished, and was permitted back simply because a child came of it. How dreadful to daily see the man who hurt you was too much. To then have him seek the ruin of her Marriage was simply cruel. I think the court did well in finding she had suffered enough, as these things were all too common (they still are). She deserved the happiness she found with her Husband, and he did well to return to her. Her Mother, by letting her rapist back into the home, ensured that she would be used by him again, and so she took away the baby, and sent him away again. Catherine was never the first concern for any of those who should have protected her…and the loss of her Husband broke her…like her doll. Ultimately, she took agency in her own life, as no one else seemed willing to. There is a great strength in that decision, although it was a drastic way to do it. When you have nothing else to lose, one is capable of almost anything. Thank you for treating her with the kindness you always show these women whose stories you tell. Much love and light…✨🖤🇨🇦

I am a victim. I was raped, molested, manipulated and treated like a mistress as a child. It started when I was 18 months old and ended when I felt strong enough, at 9 years old, to make him stop because I knew I was different than the other kids. I just wanted to be normal. He left, under protest that the gifts would stop, he would kill my pets and/or my family. I stood strong. I had a few chances to get revenge. I kept my mouth shut until he returned suddenly one day after school. I came home from the bus stop to find him cozily discussing the past three years since he had seen us last. This sudden slap to my mind unhindged me. I went mad telling him to leave. My mother sent me to my room where I proceeded to destroy anything I could. I can still see the scar on my foot in the shape of a wish bone that I garnered from kicking at a 10 gallon fish tank hard enough to break the glass. It was bleeding so I went out to tell my mom. She was in the kitchen, he in the living room. I went up to him and said, "Leave now or I will tell her right in front of you." He blanched then tried to regain the upper hand. He said, "I watch you go to school and return on the bus. You are growing up so pretty. I like watching you." The news that I discovered later to be called, stalking, about made me to tell mom but she had it hard in life and I was street wise enough to know people do things out of character. I also knew my mother had a gun. I acted like his telling of his further damage to my mind didn't mean a thing. I said forcefully and loud enough for her to hear, "Get OUT! NOW! Get out. He acted like I had insulted him and he left. She wanted to know why I was being such a bitch. So I told her... everything. She didn't believe me at first, then she started to get mad. She was mad at me for not telling sooner and she was mad at him enough to say she was going to get her gun and shoot him. She doesn't remember any of this now, at 85, she lives in bliss of a bad memory after a stroke. I on the other hand lived in fear, anger, hatred and suspicion. I lived the live of a victim reluctantly, making every mistake a victim of the types of crimes committed on my body and mind. I did self help to get passed the fact that my body had been damaged by him and I kept losing children. I was lucky, I had a daughter and she was never victimized like I was. I hunted him down when I learned about "culpability". Knowing that he could have been hurting anyone else and I had the means to stop him wasn't backed by my mom. She dove into addition to get away from her own lifes pains. An early widow, financial and relationship trouble. Life was hard. Very hard. One never recovers from the spiritual, emotional, mental, physical and social damage that happens to a child this happens to. My story is very close to the child/woman in this story. The only difference is that I never pulled the trigger. I wish I had but mom wasn't about to take me through court over this. It was 1973 when she found out. Statute of limitations came to play by the time I was an adult and as a teen, she didn't want my story laid bare for people to judge me. I always felt that she didn't want to be judged as well. I spent the majority of my life blaming her. Today, that is all but gone. However, I am 61 and still am a victim. This is a title I can not get rid of. They say everything happens for a reason and in order to make that acceptable, I have spent my entire adult life being open and honest about the horror of my childhood, the lineup of people who used and abused me as a teen and the repressed memories that inconveniently rip open that painful wound. I use my story to help other victims to not make my mothers and my mistakes. Make them pay. Stop them from hurting others. Keep your story in mind when others are trying to keep you a victim. Make your own path. Don't be afraid to love because ........not everyone is a monster.

I'm so very happy she was not sentenced to death, was set free, and seemingly lived a happy life afterwards. 💗 When I heard that she muttered "he broke my doll", I saw it more as a metaphor for what her abuser had done to her, than a statement about her beloved doll being broken in his attack upon on her. Perhaps I read too much meaning from that utterance tho.... (??)

My heart goes out to this poor woman for what she had to endure at the hands of that monster. Thankfully our justice system takes crimes like her uncle committed against her as a child far more seriously now than they had previously but unfortunately even back 30 years ago matters like this were still seen as bringing shame on the family of the children harmed by evil humans like her uncle in some parts of our country. Thanks to the good Lord now days that horrible crimes like this which are committed against innocent children aren’t swept under the rug any longer or at least as much as they were back during that period of time. A child should never have to suffer such horrific abuse only then to be made feel like it was their fault or something they had to hide for fear of it being seen a dishonorable thing on their part. This case hit me very deeply dear Oddie. I can sympathize with poor Catherine. My heart goes out to her in every way. It’s a horrible feeling as a child to be made feel more like you did something wrong when and adult is clearly the one at fault. It makes a child feel unworthy of ever properly deserving or even expecting to feel they are worthy of any form of real love as they grow into adulthood. All the while some adults around them had rather keep it quite or downplay the incidents for fear of embarrassment or shame on the family. God bless her for all of the heartbreak she suffered those years in between the time it happened, until she finally broke down and handed out justice by her own means. I can fully understand why the judge felt she should have no further contact with her mother. He definitely made a good decision on that because her mother should have went straight to the police when it happened and reported it instead of hiding it, all the while shaming poor Catherine for fear of dishonoring her family’s reputation. Catherine had to love her mother and family a great deal. So much so that she suffered inside herself for the horrific crime which was committed against her until she could simply take it no more. There was a great deal of pressure put on this poor woman as a child who’d suffered such cruelty. Unfortunately I can’t help but wonder if there are still some cases of this going on even nowadays. We have to teach our children it’s never their fault if someone mistreatments them and even more importantly we have to be there and stand up for our children in situations such as this. Thank you as always Oddie for putting together such wonderful content and letting us know about cases such as this from the past. I had never heard Catherine’s story before. I think many things might have been different in my life growing up had more people been made aware of stories like hers and the pain and injustice she went through. Thank you for all the hard work you put into each case you take on. We hope you and your family are well. Stay safe and take care everyone 👋🏻

A surprisingly sympathetic legal decision, I should think, by the standards of the time. But then, the man raped a child so who would condemn his killing? One does wonder though, how many similar cases then and even after, met with less sympathy because they were not supported by prominent people. So if it matters who you know, it matters equally who knows about you.

Hello again Oddie - You have done it again with a very interesting story. I felt so sorry for Catherine, but I feel justice was served. I think the judge ordered her not to have any contact with her Mother because I suspect her Mother wasn’t too fussy about who she allowed into her rooming house. She put her daughter in danger. Shame on her husband for not supporting her, she was the victim! My favourite parts are the little animations in every story. I really loved the running water. You are such a master at your skills and craft: Your voice, your style, your photos, your creative imagery. Amazing. This case should be cited in all Battered Woman Syndrome cases today and it seems to me to be the “case.” IMO, the judge thought she might just kill her mother for giving her baby away if she went there. He seems to have been aware of PTSD and possible “triggers” before it was PTSD. I think it was “shell shock” back then and only attributed to war time soldiers. The husband Was definitely a puss. But that concern of what people might think is still with us and only some-few- women are given a thought of “honor” today. So. Sad We are just a sad group of mean people for the most part. She will be added to group of muses and I will visit her often. 🌹
