I mean it is probably the pinnacle of reliability. How many cars on the road do you see from the 90s still other than Camry's, Corollas, and Celicas? They just don't die and he's really not wrong on that. And you can say he's scared of EVs, but why? He's 70 years old and plans to retire in the next few years. And so far nobody's really proven him wrong on EV reliability. There are EVs on the road after 10 years, but not much more than that. EVs aren't really being bought by those planning long term ownership, most seem to be buying them as luxury goods or for the fancy bonuses like the full sun roof, cellphone key, etc. They're basically treated more like phones than as the reliable car. Even when we see reviews of EVs reliability of the car or the brand are incredibly low on the bar. Like how people actively praise features like automatic charging doors that can get stuck if you lose power or the motor fails. Instead the main features looked are how cool the features are and how fast it is. These are cool to talk about but they're not really as world shattering as just having a car that lasts longer.
@KCTalksEV4 ай бұрын
@@Skylancer727 You're right on the time we've seen EVs on the roads. We will see 15+ year old EVs on the road soon, but can't blame the cars for the passage of time. He's right with a 1990s Toyota, but watching the video he's actually talking a lot of unresearched rubbish. Now to why he's scared? With an EV he will lose the oil and filter changes every 10k miles (or less if you want to prolong the longevity - I've heard 3-5k oil changes as if that should be the norm, that's a money pit even if DIY), timing belts and clutch/flywheel replacements every 80-100k. Cabin filters and screenwash will be the only major regular servicing item. And even those are going further away from the regular 10-15k intervals. And you have brakes and suspension, and the odd coolant change every 100k miles. Brake pads are lasting significantly longer on EVs. Suspension even with the increase relative weight isn't showing an issue I can find. tyre wear is a mixed bag depending on which car it is. Not much worse than an equivalent ICE with similar torque and HP. All of that is for most people a trip to the mechanic, and that is loss of money. That's the scared part. Won't affect him as you said he's getting on, but he's looking out for his brethren
@Skylancer7274 ай бұрын
@KCTalksEV I don't think he is. He has always been outspoken similarly with hybrids that don't at all change maintenance like EVs do. And you do lose oil changes, but that's chump change compared to suspension, wheel bearings, brake pads and disk, AC, etc. There are so many other issues with cars than just oil changes and EVs do increase the rate of others at the benefit of loss of oil changes. Hell he's openly stated he loves that EVs don't need emission testing. Plus he has always been open about people buying cars that will last openly bashing brands that make him more in parts costs. Like I said he's retiring soon and has been winding down his work for years. He doesn't run a full repair shop, he mostly does his work by himself. The main area I see misinformation from him is in batteries. But I don't blame him at all on that. Batteries are really complicated to understand and keep changing. Like he knows iron phosphate are lower density, he doesn't know you can charge them to 100% or that they're faster to charge. That's not really common knowledge outside the EV sphere.
@Skylancer7274 ай бұрын
@Tron-Jockey that is a completely unfair comparison. The 1000 pounds heavier is based on cars of the same category. Obviously ICE pickups are heavier than coupes, but we don't care about that. We can about ICE coupes vs electric ones. Plus the average EV sold is an SUV or crossover.

One thing to add about the lifetime emissions of EVs versus gasoline vehicles is that the EV batteries are now becoming a circular economy as they are being recycled. The recovery rate ranges from 80% of the critical minerals to about 95-ish percent, depending on the recycling company - some processes are better than others and there are a few different techniques being used. So if eventually all vehicles were electrified with some kind of lithium based battery, only about 5% of the material in the battery packs would need to come from newly mined minerals. Add to which the massive amount of battery research that is trying to identify less expensive and less rare chemical compounds to make batteries from, because of course a company that can sell a battery that’s got equivalent power density and capacity but can make a cheaper battery is likely to sell more of them.
@pietersteenkamp52414 ай бұрын
And for the most part we are not even recycling yet because it just have not reached scale with most people just adding to their battery solutions instead of tossing it out. Personally I am fortunate to live reasonably close to a waste transfer station so I take all of my used batteries there. If India can’t organize itself effectively to do proper waste disposal, they’ll pollute their own country and then have to live with the consequences. Also, the amount of toxins that are produced by the petrochemical industry is staggering, please feel free to look up Syncrude Tailings Dam in google maps. That entire “lake” named Mildred Lake is highly polluted with toxic sludge from oil extracted, and it’s one of at least a dozen tailings ponds in the area. This is the dirty secret that the spin doctors hired by oil and gas companies try to keep under wraps when claiming that electric vehicles are dirty because of the mining. Or let’s look at the beaches in Florida polluted by the Deepwater Horizon incident, there’s still oil fouling the beaches *to this day* - 14 years after the original spill. Or overland pollution caused by breaks in pipelines, like the 600,000 GALLONS of oil spilled in Kansas by a leak in the Keystone pipeline. Every form of energy production and storage has its downsides, but with gasoline it never gets any better from a pollution perspective. It’s the perfect product, something that you always need to live and which is constantly being consumed, not much different than food. As long as we’re stuck on petroleum we’ll also always have to live with the pollution of the air in cities by vehicles, the fouling of the landscape at production sites, and the production of CO2 which is changing our climate massively.

Even among EVs the most efficient is the Lucid Air, how many EV fans are buying that? Efficiency matters to the government, but consumers do not care. People will actively buy the biggest vehicle they can afford even if it cuts fuel economy by 60%. Just look how popular the Model Y is over the Model 3. The model 3 is 10% more efficient. You can say all you want that people care about efficiency, but actions speak louder than words. EVs are better for the environment, but not substantially. Even after everything EVs tend to average between 70-140mpge. But people are more buying the larger EVs meaning it's more on the lower bar than that. That puts them only about 20-30% more efficient than hybrids for example, but then what's the point? Plus many of the benefits used to make EVs more efficient could also translate to ICE as well. Cutting the weight, making the bottom flat, adding more aero could all make it better. We even see this with things like the 100mpg car.

Adding to your "place the production outside" comment: Cars have the issue of directly emitting particles and gases at their current location. There are filtering systems, but those always create a slight back pressure or need additional parts like the catalytic converter and such to reduce harmful emissions. You cannot fully filter and convert all emissions because it wouldn't be healthy for the engine or could reduce efficiency and power output. Putting a fine mesh on your exhaust pipe will most clearly damage the motor. If you now shift the emissions to a large factory though, you suddenly have much more control over them. You can create explicit filtration buildings, work on permanent contamination storage, recycle certain gases, particles and chemical waste, and everything is contained in one spot. While an immediate disaster would of course be devastating to the surrounding, the same is true for any petrol car production site. So what really needs to be compared is not the theoretical output of emissions during one production, but how much actually goes into the atmosphere and landscape. And in this regard, factories are by miles, a landslide and a cosmic shift better than any car on the road. Because they are a controlled and contained surrounding. So overall, while the production of batteries indeed is more environmentaly heavy than of a petrol cars motor, the environmental impact, assuming regulations andaws are being followed, is basically the same, because there's standards and enforcements on how much pollution is allowed to go into the surrounding by a certain factory. Peteol cars just blow it anywhere, all the time, for as long as they're on the road and getting filled up over and over and over again.

Ironically, I think you might be wrong about the EV Semis. I happened to talk to a Tesla Semi truck tester, and he informed me that it’s not as heavy as you might think. In fact, he suggested it was lighter than a Day cab. However, in 2019, the federal government allowed a 2,000 lb weight allowance for EVs, bringing the total to 82,000 lbs for EV semi trucks. There is a subgoal, and that is to keep axle weight below 20,000 lbs because this is the root cause of road damage. When you do the math, 12-34-34 is the max weight distribution for a truck. The drive axles of a tractor could take an additional 2,000 lbs without significantly damaging the roads if they were diesel trucks, as diesel trucks don’t have the torque of an electric vehicle. But I fear that with the extra torque of electric trucks, EV semis may end up doing more damage. If you look at stoplights in heavy truck areas, you’ll see a lot of breakage. However, because a Tesla Semi has a much smoother takeoff, this might have a mitigating effect. In short, there are a lot of interesting questions to ask and get answers to.

There is one thing I need to add. Heavier vehicles do harm the road more obviously. There is a calculation on full weight cycle counts which is used to size the structure of roads accordingly to their intended usage. Different weight classes of vehicles get a certain cycle count in this calculation. This is obviously not unique to BEVs. Also in many cases, the ICE equivalents are the same weight or at least not much less. So this is actually a problem produced by the stupid path of making everything bigger and heavier. As an ICE fan, I don’t “hate” EVs. I think they definitely have a place in the market with their own niche and cater to different people for all sorts of different reasons, and to leave it to diie, is leaving money on the table. That said, for me personally, it’s just that if every car were forced to go full BEV, it would feel like I’m driving in just another reskinned Tesla or a glorified power wheels. Nothing wrong with Teslas, but if everything I drove “felt” almost exactly the same, and had the same personality, the same post-modern minimalistic motif, the driving experience would feel terribly bland and fatally boring. If you’re used to driving around in economy cars your whole life or never cared for car culture, you probably wouldn’t understand or would even dismiss my concern as silly or unimportant, but driving is part of the modern-day human experience and to take it for granted, you miss out on a big part of life. What most of us enthusiasts actually hate about EVs is that many western governments are forcing every car company to go electric by some arbitrary date without weighing the cons of capriciously pushing this too aggressively, too fast. As we speak, Toyota, Subaru and Porsche are collaborating to create carbon neutral fuels and it looks like they’re pretty close to saving the ICE engine. And I have faith that they will. The future doesn’t HAVE to be electric but about having variety. As ICE enthusiasts, we couldn’t care less about what the engine itself is fueled by, as long as it gets to keep its unique characteristics that make it that much more enjoyable to drive. That’s all. The rumble of the engine, the feel of the downshifting transmission working to deliver the power to the wheels through the driveshaft, the reverberating exhaust note is something that cannot ever be correctly replicated by synthetic sounds or electric rumblers. No two engines are alike and thats the beauty of ICE engines.

@@ronblack7870 depends on the range of the EVs in question. Some are built with just enough for a typical commute every day, with the expectation that it charges at work or home every day, which is usually not a problem since they are usually more efficient and cheaper from not carrying battery capacity they don't need every day. maybe a household might have multiple EVs, one economy minded commuter and one with a more typical 200-300 mile range, they might just use a level one charger for the commuter and save the level 2 for the longer ranged one or if they need to get charged fast. it's not that crazy to think of. Or you might have a household with one longer ranged car for trips and larger cargo and a few E-bikes (or other electric micromobility) for commuting. On that note, supporting multiple E-bikes is not even a challenge for your home's electrical system. My bike's charger only pulls 185 watts at 1.5 amps while charging, versus the 20-30 amps (at 240 volts) that a level 2 charger uses, so you could charge a lot of bike batteries at once for the same wattage as one level 2 charger. E-bikes are also way cheaper to purchase and operate, and use a rather small fraction of the materials used for an electric car.

What is the actual 'whole of life' for an EV?, do we even know, and what happens and how much will it cost to remove and recycle the battery, and who pays for that? I have read 10 years, some say an EV battery is serviceable for much longer, newer vehicles are definitely better, but there are Leaf's here which are just parked up and no one knows what to do about them, they have under 40km range and the nearest battery recycling centre is overseas and thousands of kilometers away.

I actually removed him from my channels that come up. Without going into singular detail to explain his view and videos on ev's. Like most have said the argument on how ev gets their power and mining the lithium etc. The end of life Co2 emissions is always going to much less overall. And now we have over 10 years of data collection thanks to tesla and others we can see the raw real data. I agree there is much to reduce the carbon footprint and Co2 overall but if you compare a few things they are way ahead. 1. With the exception of the battery pack itself the body panels, Interior and seat etc are almost identical to the IC cars. There is a shift to us more carbon neutral components. 2. Less maintenance on the ev. No oil changes intervals every 3000 to 10000 miles many people forget about this every important thing. IC engines still need to have the fuilds changed. Also rear end and transmission fluid for certain other types of vehicles. 3. On the ev side increase wear in tires due to heavier than the IC counterpart Kia Niro is a prime example. 4. Ev's are coming with a vast improvement for safety and technology. Take that as you will hold and bad. Sometimes having all that tech does put a damper on fun of feeling the car. Pure driving feel us what it's most commonly referred to. I wish everyone the best in what ever choice they make for a vehicle going forward. Each EV and IC has its own use case and nothing wrong with making it work for what you need them for. ❤

I didnt buy an EV because of cleaner air. I bought an EV because its faster, quieter, cheaper to run, more reliable (assuming they put the same level of engineering into the EV that they do in ICE and dont intentionally sabotage it, like the infamous GM Diesel), roomier, much less likely to catch fire, dont have to go to gas stations anymore and, if society collapses (until the roads collapse also) I can still drive on home solar, wind or microhydro - whereas I can NOT make gasoline (or at least have not intention to do so). But I love the fact that I also do make the air cleaner (altho the Honda it replaced was already an ULEV) - whether its global warming or not, I like BREATHING.

For example, trucks carrying the batteries to get installed may currently be diesel but will eventually get converted to battery power thus making that part of the process cleaner.

The argument about not buying a second EV is so dumb. I'm a three car household with one Model 3 and 2 ICE cars. My next car will absolutely be an EV. But I won't install a second charger. I'll either alternate nights charging (I could usually go at least 2-3 days without charging so no big deal) or I'll by a simple Level 1 charger to trickle charge if needed. The cost savings on Gas and maintenance alone makes EVs so superior to ICE cars, I don't understand the hesitancy.

We are also a 3 car household, but with 2 EVs(Mini Cooper SE, Chevy Bolt EUV) and 1 ICE for our daughter. We have no need to have 2 chargers. I only need to plug the Bolt in at most twice a week(always charging it overnight) and the Mini whenever it gets below 50%(usually 3 times a week). What Scotty fails to understand is that charging an EV is not the same as putting gas in an ICE. He is trying to make people think that you run the battery all the way down and then charge it only once it gets close to empty, and that for some reason both EVs would always be empty and need "re-fueled" at the same time. This is never the case when you have a home charger, and for most EV owners, 1 charger would be adequate for multiple EVs in the household.

My whole house is already a trailer that is 100% electric, going solar with EV's is literally a no-brainer as the most valuable thing I can add to my house to make it the best return on investment for whoever gets my house in the future. If you actually want to help save the earth and go green, dont go out and buy an EV, just stop buying junk off amazon, or more specifically junk from overseas. I think its 1 ocean vessel emits more carbon in 1 hour than every passenger car in the US does in a year. And now we want chinese EVs.... Ok then... Good luck with that.

I'm a Scotty Kilmer fan, but I don't care what he has to say outside of automotive repair. I completely disagree with him about battery electric vehicles and even hybrids. He's not comfortable with them, and so he has a bias against them. I'm not a Tesla fan, but I like EVs, and I'm actually concerned that Tesla is going to have a negative impact on the long-term viability of EVs, much like GM's disasterous Oldsmobile 350 diesel did on diesel passengercars in the 1980s. With that said, I don't think EVs are anywhere close to saving us either. We need a massive overhaul of public transportation in this country. We need to make our living areas more walkable and bikeable and increase the amount of public transportation options available to make them fast clean and efficient. EVs are better than internal combustion engine cars, no doubt. But they're still far less efficient than a well-engineered and properly run public transportation infrastructure that also utilizes micro-mobility and walking, bicycling, etc. To be honest, with the current level of battery technology that we have, I think a plug-in hybrid is the ideal EV. It reduces the amount of lithium mining necessary and provides a battery that has adequate range for most people's daily driving needs, which means that most people could plug it in every night and go months without the internal combustion engine ever having to start. But, when a longer range is necessary, you have an internal combustion engine and an extremely efficient hybrid electric drivetrain that can get you from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.

@markboscawen83304 ай бұрын
An emerging issue with PHEVs & emissions is fundamentally people get into lazy habits. So instead of charging the smaller battery frequently they start to rely on the ICE for all travel. Which then increases emissions over what they would have been because now the ICE powertrain is using extra fuel to move the deadweight of the battery. Also, the reduced battery size increases the depth of charge/discharge cycles - which can reduce battery lifespan. If range decreases the time the PHEV will be powered by the ICE will increase - again increasing emissions. No doubt cost pressures will encourage some to not replace a dead battery & just drive it like a full time ICE vehicle - substantially increasing emissions. So from the objective of decreasing emissions PHEVs will increasingly be a fail. As to hybrids, they’re a ICE wolf in EVs clothing. So even worse.
@vicvalliant10924 ай бұрын
The trouble with public transport is it is massively capital expensive which needs to come from someones pocket and doesn't go where you need to. Not sure about efficiency with empty busses and trains running at times people don't want to travel etc. This is why people jumped off the trains when cars arrived. Cars gave freedom. The only way public transport will ever work is for people to give up freedom or be forced to give up freedom which is more likely.
@thatcarguy1UZ4 ай бұрын
@vicvalliant1092 That's absolutely false because public transportation works everywhere else in the world. Furthermore, public transportation in the United States was the envy of the rest of the world until General Motors, Firestone Rubber, and Standard Oil formed "American City Lines" after World War II when the public transportation system was run down due to lack of materials during the war. So they bribed certain officials and came in and bought up streetcar networks and replaced them with GM's crappy buses purposely to make public transportation less convenient and less pleasant. The reason that this occurred was specifically because these companies were aggravated that many people who lived in cities saw no need to own cars, so they destroyed all that infrastructure specifically to sell cars. Further, it's not an either or proposition. I have family in europe. Many of whom own cars but, they don't have to drive everywhere because they have a decent public transportation system that gets them where they want to go and they use the car for special or specific circumstances.
