Shortly after the destruction of Starkiller Base, General Leia Organa leads the evacuation of Resistance forces when a First Order fleet arrives. Against Leia's orders, Poe Dameron leads a costly counterattack that destroys a First Order dreadnought. The remaining Resistance escapes into hyperspace, but the First Order uses a device to track them, and attacks again. Kylo Ren hesitates to fire on the lead Resistance ship after sensing his mother Leia's presence on board, but his wingmen destroy the bridge, killing most of the Resistance's leaders. Leia is dragged into space, but survives by using the Force. While Leia recovers, Vice Admiral Holdo assumes command of the Resistance. Running low on fuel, the remaining fleet is pursued by the First Order.

The young resistance officer with her hair in bunches, who joins in Poe's mutiny, is Carrie Fisher's daughter Billie Lourde. Her hairstyle's a nod to the famous side-buns that Carrie wore in the very first movie.

@Mr. Al @ Hans Ollo You're both wrong. JJ Abrams DID have treatments for 8 & 9. They've been leaked by a Bad Robot employee. JJ wrote them in April and May of 2014 respectively, a few months after writing 7. They answer some, but not all of the questions. JJ created a whole mythology behind Snoke and what was going on with Luke and the First Jedi Temple. But Kennedy didn't like his stories, or any of JJ's revisions of them, so she rejected them outright and told Rian to start from scratch, seemingly not telling Rian that JJ had any treatments. These are JJ's earliest drafts of his treatments, and I won't lie, they're kind of a big mess (especially Ep9), but I think JJ's Episode 8 had a lot of redeeming qualities and showed promise. I don't believe the idea of JJ Abrams not having answers to were the story was going. It seems more like the studio took note of fans were saying, in "The force awakens is just a remake of A new hope" and tried to twist things into something original. That twist ended up being too much however and in my opinion it ruined the Skywalker saga by making it actually a Palpatine saga.

I think I read somewhere (like an official wiki or text interview) that Kylo is actually in the 20-25 range. He is about the same age as Rey, but slightly older by a few years. Adam Driver is about 35-36 in real life and I heard he was playing a younger character than his real life age. Like Kylo is about 8-10 younger than Adam Driver. First time I'm hearing the 29 age.

The healthiest response to this trilogy in particular is to acknowledge its flaws but get swept up in what works nonetheless. Each episode has some merit. A great source of anger for fans is that there is a tremendous amount of excellent sequel material to be mined in the Expanded Universe which was arbitrarily made non-canon when Lucas sold the rights to Disney. This material is beloved, has been around for 40 years and continued the saga up to 300 years in the future!

This is my main problem with TLJ.........they killed off snoke when we literally don’t know jackshit about him. He could’ve been a kickass final villain in ROS but they killed him off so they had to make palpatine the big bad, for the THIRD TIME IN A ROW. And don’t get me wrong I love palpatine, but they should’ve allowed snoke to become a proper villain

Turns 5 today! Love the new characters, the various worlds, the creatures, and even how the filmmakers continue to build the storytelling as well as adding to the mythos Even the Force has new elements added to it which is refreshing The color scheme in here is really nice mixing red and white Of course we can’t forget the many inside references and callbacks to the older films as is tradition I really like the moral psychology behind this with many of its themes like mentorship being invigorating and not always having to fight but run instead Warriors can be deified and romanticized, hypocrisy can be hubris, maybe there is no good or evil just morally grey areas, maybe we should let the past die, the true burden of masters is what students grow beyond, there’s always a need to accept imperfection, the only way to get rich is to profit off of war The worst part of the movie is definitely the pacing yet it does try to break away from traditional ‘Star Wars’ formula after every other plot thread has been explored Snoke is also very underutilized in this which is a shame but this is truly the best acting from both the late Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, they’ve solidified themselves as Leia and Luke for over four decades Luke shows his level of frustration with Rey being empathetic on how to approach the Jedi way of training This movie is definitely polarizing since many will feel it betrays the original canon but also adds new elements although it doesn’t answer all the questions I really appreciate the film for taking risks despite pacing issues and some things not making any sense

Episode 7 is the first of the sequel trilogy, so if Ben was redeemed there would be no conflict in 8 and 9, unless something comes up later, but that didn’t happen, that’s expecting too much creativity from disney, so we get a redo of the original trilogy while crushing everything you loved about the original trilogy.

Man, I get that there's some flaws in these movies, but I genuinely don't understand why these flaws/inconsistencies are somehow worse than the original trilogy. Everyone seems to have a different reason why the non-original-trilogies piss them off, and it's hard to keep track of. But I feel like a bunch of these things are easily explainable/not a big deal. Like, complaining about Luke having a flash of fear that makes him consider killing Ben. Why is that bad? It's a perfectly reasonable and unique take on the dynamic between the dark side and the light. It uses fear/primal urges to illustrate the differences between dark and light, and shows that people are not born as bastions of light or dark most of the time -- they are a mix of both and temptations will arise. The fear in Luke was just like the fear Anakin had about losing Padme. Luke was not young and impressionable, and his training/resilience proved that he would not actually kill Ben. Basically, it's normal to be tempted, but the movie doesn't downplay Luke's training and resilience, because he still resists a pretty strong temptation. Similarly, Ben is young and impressionable, and is given a false image of the reality by Snoke, similar to what was done to Anakin by Palpatine, except playing on Ben's fear of death, fear of being an outsider, and general feelings of worthlessness/incompetence/lowliness. I dunno, I see people bitching about that choice and it just makes watching Star Wars harder than I think it ought to be.

I think its interesting the various opinions of which films are the largest disappointment. It depends I think on the various generations, and also depends on knowledge of the expanded universe as well. For me it was the prequels as the largest disappointment. Even with the original trilogy, some people didn't like the fragmented story until they finished it all. Then it made more sense (instead of waiting for 3 years for the next film).

I love the Last Jedi. It's my third favorite Star Wars movie in the entire franchise. It's not Rian Johnson's fault that JJ and Kathleen Kennedy had no plan or shared a plan for what he should set up in episode 9. I think fans were just disappointed they didn't get to see Master Jedi Luke at the height of his powers. But this is 30 years later. He is so much more interesting and complex at this point in his life - and has the most beautiful, powerful death in the SW franchise, as he deserved.

I've been a fan since the 90's. This movie actually has some good moments: killing Snoke, putting Hux on hold, Luke facing down the First Order. But then there are other moments that are just cringey: Rose saving Finn, the whole casino planet that is used as a commentary on the military industrial complex but does nothing to advance the story, etc. And then when you put all 3 movies together, I just get a sense that there were too many chefs in the kitchen. It's just a very dissonant trilogy.

@Mr. Al JJ had no answers - that's why he left the project after VII. JJ has, as he has called it, this concept known as "The Mystery Box". He presents this box to the audience, plays up how important this box is, and nudges the audience into asking, "what's in it?". He spends so much time focusing on this box, yet never revealing what's inside; if he DOES reveal a tiny hint, he presents two new Mystery Boxes. In this manner, the audience is kept wanting more, if only to get the explanation as to how or why something happened. Indeed, this is the main reason most people went to see Episode VIII, as VII presented so many unanswered questions. In truth, JJ had no answers - he never does. Case in point: the tv show LOST. So, when Rian Johnson came onto the project, he decided that if JJ had no answers to these mysteries that they didn't matter; he made the answers "nothing". Fans see it as a big middle finger to them, but I've always seen it as more of a middle finger to Abrams and to Disney for bullshitting everyone. He systematically ruined as much as he could in one movie to showcase that that was in fact exactly what Disney was doing since purchasing the IP; it's allegorical.

I don't agree with killing Snoke or the Hux joke. Hux was not made tobe a baffoon in TFA and this now diminishes his character. And killing Snoke, apart of being the only credible villain left, created a vacuum that Kylo was not capable of filling (imo) and Disney was not going to allow him to either. Which then lead to Ep9 issues.

Except Canto Bight is crucial to Finn's arc. His actions on the Supremacy and Crait wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Canto Bight. Also what there's a reason Rose saved Finn. What he was planning was never going to work. Paige Tico died taking out the Dreadnought. And what did her martyrdom bring? The First Order bore down on the Resistance a hundredfold. Rendering what Paige did completely moot. Cut to the Battle of Crait. Visual storytelling shows us 1 of 2 outcomes: 1. Due to the damage Finn's speeder sustained and how it was still falling apart, he would have harmlessly impacted on the surface or 2) with it seconds away from firing (as we see), the canon would fire and vaporize Finn. And that's what Rose is talking about and she does what she does; pointless sacrifices (like what Finn was trying to do, like what Paige did) accomplish nothing. They're ultimately hollow gestures

@@pulpficti Didn't have the balls to do what? What exactly was Last Jedi building to? The only storyline we have leading into 9 is a general sense that the First Order eventually need to be defeated, but we knew that already. And the Galaxy has force-sensitive people who might be Jedi one day. What a shocker. TLJ doesn't set anything up that TFA and previous movies didn't already set up. All TLJ did was subtract the new storylines TFA teased. TLJ even negated its own setups that could have changed the game. Kylo says he wants to let the past and past conventions die. That could have been interesting. Kylo could have tried to reform the First Order, or break off in a splinter faction, or reach out to the Resistance for negotiations. He could have become a demagogue in the New Republic, or a fugitive from Hux and the Resistance. But what does Rian do instead? He just has Kylo continue to hunt the Resistance, perpetuating the Empire vs Rebellion conflict. Kylo isn't behaving any differently than Snoke would, or even he himself would. Kylo's betrayal of Snoke and declaration that old things need to die led nowhere. Evil Kylo is in charge of the Evil First Order, but that was basically how Force Awakens began. 9 was always going to have to pull new storylines (and stakes) out of thin air. It didn't have to be Palpatine, but 9 was going to have to conjure something up. It continues from where 7 left off because 8 takes us back to where 7 left off. with only a few minor differences. I guess 9 could have focused more on the Galaxy rising up like in Trevorrow's, but that would work better for a third act or a long TV series. Not sure how you would do that in 2 hours.

Once they announced Kasdan was back to write, and Harrison was back I knew what was to come... just not how. I am not a fan of the sequels, and also fully expected Han to die (I actually think that was handled quite well, personally). I respect your opinion (envy you, even-I really wish I loved them) but please do not say that people are "wa wa"-ing or being petty. I do not like this from either side, be it from those who like the Sequels or those who do not. I will say, just because a movie is released and marketed doesn't mean it's automatically exactly what it should be, and those who dislike it are simply unhappy it's not what they would have done. Some people feel that way, I'm sure, but the impression I get is that people were disappointed with what was released and, in response, are offering up ways it could have been done better. Anyway, I can respect a lot of what was attempted in the Sequels. I think that over 3/4 of what could have been good ideas were executed poorly, but I can understand why some people like them. Do me a favor-keep enjoying the movies, will you? If I can't enjoy them, at least somebody can, and that is enough. :)

@Dr Mittens PhD I know that is a common viewpoint but personally I don't think any movie should need a sequel to make sense out of it. Also, TFA had poor characterisation, numerous plot holes, lore breaking plot twists (sentient light sabers anyone? WTF?) and a storyline that completely ripped off the OT. Also, they butchered Han Solo's character by making him a terrible smuggler, a terrible father, a terrible partner to Leia, etc. He even needed a teenager from a desert planet to tell him how to fix his own ship that he has owned and flown for decades....Worst of all, there is no continuity whatsoever from episode VI. None of these issues (and there are many more I haven't mentioned) could ever have been fixed by episode 8. I agree that there were some enjoyable elements in TFA but I still think it is a bad movie overall.

@@ARD-lk5pr One thing that really bugged me about TFA, and the rest of the series as a whole, was the handling of Finn. When I saw that one of the main characters was going to be an ex-stormtrooper wielding a lightsaber, I was very pumped, and when Rey just got it at the end of the movie it was a huge letdown. The writers could have created a team dynamic between Rey and Finn, with Rey being a potent force-user, while Finn used the lightsaber. This idea also makes sense given Finn's military background and the hinting of Rey's backstory. It would have made Finn, well, actually have a meaningful purpose in the story.
