Research scientist Galen Erso and his family are in hiding on the planet Lah'mu when Imperial weapons developer Orson Krennic arrives to press him into completing the Death Star, a space station-based superweapon capable of destroying entire planets. Galen's wife, Lyra, is killed in the confrontation while their daughter, Jyn, escapes and is rescued by rebel extremist Saw Gerrera.
15 later, cargo pilot Bodhi Rook defects from the Empire, taking a holographic message recorded by Galen to Gerrera on the desert moon Jedha. Rebel Alliance intelligence officer Cassian Andor learns of the Death Star from an informant and frees Jyn from an Imperial labor camp at Wobani. Cassian brings Jyn to the Rebel leader Mon Mothma, who convinces her to find and rescue Galen so the Alliance can learn more about the Death Star. Cassian is covertly ordered to kill Galen rather than extract him. // wikipedia

After you finish the movies (or before, since you’ve basically seen all the best movies now... other than arguably solo compared to the sequels...) you should dive into the clone wars cgi show/movie (google the chronological order for it) and then Star Wars Rebels. They’re cartoons but are some of the best Star Wars content ever made once you get past the first seasons. They also make Anakin so much more tragic and introduce a certain character from this rogue one.

It's way way better to read the Star Wars novels and some of the comics than watching the sequels. Trust me once you read the novels then watch the sequels you'll know why many Star Wars fans disliked the sequels. But if you just want to watch the movies and not bother reading the Star Wars novels and comic books then enjoy the Star Wars sequel movies .

@Victor Kurske bland and generic?? Most star wars fans have this as one of the best star wars films. So what ever this movie did they should do more of it. Jyns character wasn't riddled with innuendos and political garbage like rays. The robot was funny, BB9 wasn't, the movie has believable consequences unlike any of the new saga films. I have it ranked as 3rd or 4th in the star wars chart.

I love how this ties in so nicely between III and IV. You get the younger Mon Mothma (in a few Ep. III deleted scenes) as well as in Ep. VI as leader of the Rebellion. You get an older Bail Organa (Leia's Dad). You get Vader and Leia ('nuff said). You get Tarkin from Ep. IV. You get Threepio and Artoo. Even a couple nods to Star Wars Rebels (The Ghost is briefly seen in the battle of Scarif and you see Chopper and them asking over the comm for "General Sendula"). And Saw Gerrera was in both Clone Wars and Rebels both... Oh, neither planet exploded as they only tested the Death Star with single reactor blasts, enough to blast a city to ashes, but not the planet.

@Jeff Burnham the episodes still make sense in the correct order. If you watched them in release order, the Florrum episode with Maul and Savage happens before the entire youngling arc, which is a little confusing. Overall it leads to a more coherent experience.

Fun Fact: The reason why every Star Wars "episode" starts with, "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....." is because the episodes are actually stories that are being told by the "Whills". The Whills were a community of beings who notably wrote the "Journal of the Whills", a document that recorded important events in the galaxy, which is where the episodes came from. The midi-chlorians communicate with the Whills, which in a general sense, makes them (the Whills) the Force. 😊❤👍

What they used for Tarkin and Leia was a process called Performance Capture. This involves having actors playing roles with marker dots on their faces and wearing a camera rig. The actor "drives" the performance and the cgi is laid over it. Every bit of the actors performance is captured through the dots and camera rig. The camera records all the dots as they move on the actors face, and then this is translated onto the digital face that you see in the film. I dont know if you already know this, as you said "facial likeness", but i just wanted to let you know how it was accomplished in case you didn't know already. This remarkable technology is advancing all the time.

What I love most about Rogue One is that it does what all the best prequels do, and which in my opinion the prequel trilogy didn't do. For me, the best prequel stories make you look at events from the main story in a new light. Rogue One took one of the weaker plot points of A New Hope, the fatal exhaust port flaw, and gave it meaning. No longer is it a bonehead engineering move, it's an act of sabotage by Galen as revenge against the Empire. Now when we watch the Death Star explode in A New Hope, we're seeing Galen's plan finally succeed, and it's that much more powerful a moment. With the prequel trilogy, yes we got to see the story of Palpatine's rise and Anakin's fall, but we already knew the key plot points that the trilogy was building towards(the beginnings of the Empire, Anakin becoming Darth Vader, sending the twins into hiding etc). Nothing was revealed that changes how I view the original trilogy.

Revenge of the Sith added more gravitas to Obi Wan's death in Episode IV. He was there at their birth. He was there as they were separated in III. In IV, towards the end of his duel with Vader, he looks at them and sees them finally reunited. Together, they are the new hope. Content that he completed his mission, he gives Vader that smile and sacrifices himself.

I won't say it's that bad of a spoiler to have to sit through 5 seasons of the Clone Wars. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty big CW spoiler, but I'm not sure if it's worth it for a reactor to have to wait through many seasons of CW just because of a spoiler that only lasts for 1-2 minutes of the whole Solo movie. You can just watch the Solo movie before seeing CW, and just take the spoiler as an ultimate plot twist reveal. Then watching CW afterwards would have the reactor understand how that plot twist came to be. It's sort of like reliving the "I am your father" plot twist reveal, where watching episode 5 first would be a big reveal and then watching episodes 6, 1, 2, and 3 would give viewers the understanding of how Vader was Luke's father. And besides, if we are going with the idea of having Mary sit through 5 seasons of CW before watching Solo, then I see no problem with having Mary also sitting through the entirety of CW and Rebels before moving on to Mandalorian season 2 (if she plans to react to that as well).

You nailed it. My first comment coming out was that this was the first film to put the War in Star Wars. Also, I love that they found such an awesome way of making a movie out of the opening crawl of the original STAR WARS (aka Episode IV).

This movie will always be bitter sweet for me. It's a very good movie and I do really enjoy watching it, but the day I first saw it in the theater was the day that Carrie Fisher died. I was seeing it with a friend and as we were sitting down in our seats, he was checking his phone one last time before shutting it off (this was before previews had started) and he saw the news and told me. So when Princess Leia showed up at the end it took everything I had not completely lose it in the theater.

This is the 2nd best Star Wars movie behind The Empire Strikes back which is the best of all Star Wars movies. It explains why Luke Skywalker was able to destroy The Death Star which was always a question we asked ourselves. The scientist planted this during construction. The acting was top notch and the story was told very well. 1 of the few Star Wars Masterpieces along with The Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope.

Rogue One is tied for my number 1 with Empire Strike Back. About the CGI: they got an actor about the same build as the original Tarkin, the face was totally CGI. On the big screen, it was pretty obvious. However, Carrie Fisher did play Princess Leia, so she had the facial structure, and the real voice, then just had to use de-aging CGI for that quick shot, and I thought the crew did a great job of it.

great reaction to what for me was easily the best of the "new SW" movies as it was as you said a war movie that just happened to be set in the SW universe and I felt that it was well written and executed much more smoothly than the sequels, with some really great characters that had so much potential, but we all knew they wouldn't make it out as they were the "Many Bothans who died to bring the rebellion the Death Star information" mentioned in ep 4... enjoyed it, Mary and looking forward to your take on the sequels.....

This movie ends just hours before A New Hope begins! The Death Star plans featured in the Episode IV briefing are what is handed to Leia and what she uploads into Artoo! As you discovered, the likenesses of Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing were digitally overlaid on actors portraying Leia and Tarkin because both original actors had passed away. Alan Tudyk as K-2SO and Donnie Yen as Chirrut both nearly steal this movie! Every volunteer on that Scarif mission knows they're on a one-way trip but Felicity Jones delivers an incredible motivational speech! Good eye! That is indeed Ser Barristan Selmy as General Jan Dodonna both played by Ian McElhinney! Saw Gerrera played by Forest Whitaker was the one who recovered young Jyn from her hiding place because her parents had requested it of him on the viewscreen earlier. His partisans were a more militant splinter group of the Rebel Alliance led by Senators Bail Organa and Mon Mothma. His character is introduced in the animated Clone Wars. Darth Vader is absolutely SAVAGE in this film! There are SO MANY actor and/or character cameos and references in this film tying into other parts of the franchise. Here are some in order of appearance: 1. Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker; animated Clone Wars, Fallen Order video game and animated Rebels) 2. Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly reprising her prequel appearance; animated Clone Wars, Episode III, animated Rebels, Episode VI portrayed by a different actress) 3. General Jan Dodonna (bearded rebel General from Death Star briefing; animated Rebels, Episode IV portrayed by a different actor) 4. Senator Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits reprising his prequel role as Leia's adoptive father; Episode II, animated Clone Wars, Episode III, animated Rebels) 5. Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin (CGI Peter Cushing; animated Clone Wars; Episode III portrayed by a different actor, animated Rebels, Episode IV) 6. Ponda Baba & Dr. Evazan (walrus alien or Aqualish and disfigured bud who end up tangling with Obi-Wan in a Tatooine cantina; Episode IV portrayed by different actors) 7. Weeteef Cyu-Bee (Warwick Davis, Star Wars' lucky penny; originally Wicket the Ewok in Episode VI, he played the small Partisan alien with a big gun on Jedha and has a cameo in every Star Wars movie like Stan Lee in the MCU!) 8. Darth Vader (James Earl Jones voices him again!) 9. Hera Syndulla (Twi'lek star of animated Rebels and daughter of Clone Wars freedom fighter Cham Syndulla mentioned over intercom at the Yavin base after Jyn fails to get a green light for her Scarif mission) 10. C-3PO & R2-D2 (Anthony Daniels puts on the golden plating yet again and is joined by his astromech partner!) 11. Obi-Wan Kenobi (mentioned only as the Jedi in hiding who served Bail well in the Clone Wars and whom Mon Mothma wishes to contact) 12. Captain Antilles (Captain of Leia's transport and Vader's first choke-out on film!; Episode IV portrayed by a different actor) 13. Red & Gold Leaders (Drewe Henley and Angus MacInnes reprised their roles as the X- and Y-Wing Commanders, respectively, who perished attacking the Death Star by lending their voices to archival footage digitally inserted into the cockpits during the attack on Scarif; Episode IV) 14. Princess Leia Organa (CGI Carrie Fisher gets the last word!)
