Former President Jimmy Carter is in attendance Tuesday at the Atlanta tribute service for his wife of 77 years, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
It is just the second public appearance for the former president over the last several months, after he entered hospice care in February.
The trip to Atlanta this week is also the first publicly known travel for Carter, who turned 99 in October, this year. The former president and family members traveled with a motorcade from Plains to Atlanta on Monday to the Carter Center, where a repose service was held for Rosalynn.
"He doesn't like to be far from her," Carter Center CEO Paige Alexander explained to 11Alive's Savannah Levins.
The former first lady passed away on Nov. 19 at 96 years old. It was announced just this week that Jimmy Carter would be traveling to Atlanta for services.
The last public appearance Carter had made was with Rosalynn in September, when the couple went for a ride at the Plains Peanut Festival.
By and large his family has chosen to keep the former president's ongoing health status private this year. The most recent update on the his condition came in September from his grandson in an interview with People, where he said, "It's clear we're in the final chapter" in regards to his health.
Josh Carter said that nonetheless the former president is "still fully Jimmy Carter" while adding that people are at the former president's house around the clock. He said those people have only been family and caregivers and that Jimmy has "felt the love."

Respect for Rosalynn Carter, but Betty Ford who immediately preceded her was a trailblazer and loved Jerry as much as Rosalynn loved Jimmy. 👩‍❤‍👨 I'm a little biased though because they are buried side by side at Ford's Presidential Museum in my home town and we knew them over the years. In the early 40's just after he finished law school, Jerry whose family home was around the corner, used to stop by my Dad's to play 'war games' on the living room floor where they had a homemade board with models of navy vessels set up. When Jerry became the accidental president, he treated a couple of my cousins to a flight on a fighter jet breaking the sound barrier. But I digress. Rest in blessed peace, Mrs. Carter. May your beloved join you soon. Maybe have a card game with Betty and Jerry. ♥♠♦♣ Amen.

I lost my mom when I was 16. She was 34. It was very hard. But there are 2 ways to think about it. I was so young, I have missed her my whole life, as Im 50 now. But at the same time, I feel for people that have had their parents for 60 years...(or a spouse/best friend) they've been through so much more than my mom and I. It was hard for me to say goodbye, but then I understand and sympathize with others, after losing someone who has been a huge part of their life for SOOO long! Either way, it's hard to lose someone. So, yeah, I feel bad for grief, and the loss of a loved one, no matter the age...it is ALWAYS heartbreaking when you lose someone you love. Geeze The good thing is, if they were truly Christians, they will not have to wait so long to be together again...FOREVER.

@@michaelstacey8303 maybe ask yourself, out of all the comments of admiration for the Carter’s , why was MY comment the one you responded to? Plenty of others posted the same sentiments for this historic event, but you attacked me. In fact, do you have any thoughts at all about the Carters? Why did you even open a news story about them if you weren’t interested enough in it to leave a comment of your own? Latent anger waiting for a trigger makes you dangerous. Get some help.

Who are you to say ''we can only hope for such a love'' ? My friends at church have been married for decades and are as much in love as they ever were, along with their community service, not to mention my grandparents and older relatives. I know married missionaries in dangerous places who put their lives on the line every day, for the sake of souls, THEY are the epitome of selflessness.

@@marilynwillett804 you live a blessed life. How wonderful for you! The Carter’s were also a Christian family, rich in faith. Their strength through Christ was evident while their children eulogized their mother, making everyone who attended feel relaxed and welcome. How well rounded a family they must be to have attained something only a family who truly understands love could. While the church is available to guide our lives, not everyone opens themselves to its value. I speak from the standpoint of a family that lived with a great deal of past pain, never healing through the church we should have attended. My father eventually passed away from alcoholism, although he lived a fairly long life, and my devoted mother was left with little means, although she got by with some help from those closest to her. Of course I am not an authority on love, who is?, but I know what it is when I see it, and I know what life is like growing up without its entirety. I believe the Carters lived a Christ centered life, raised a principled family and devoted themselves to community. What more could they have done? Being a Christian is not a competition. Isn’t it sad we live in a world where a simple comment of admiration develops into this kind of continued commentary? Cancel culture is born of and thrives on this kind of confrontation.
