If the Rook just moves away to b8 after Rxa7, after the rook and queen exchange we have Rxb7+, but the knight can move to d7, protected by the bishop on h3. Would have been interesting to see the lines in that case. Maybe White didn't need to exchange in that case.

if rook b8, then rook capture b7 with check. That means it is back to similar position. If blocked by bishop or knight it is still game over as after all exchanges black will be down by whole rook.

Around move 21 onward, I kept seeing knight sacrifices on the pawn on g5. Not only to tear up the K-side but for example after 22. Qd4+ had black played Kh7 23. Nxg5+ allows Qd3+ picking off the B on h3. Black's position looks awful anyhow, but everyone loves the inexplicable sac.
