Cool thing is, in the very first He-Man stories (before the show) he used the axe, and the sword was just the key to open Castle Greyskull. In the comic that came with the very first He-Man figure, in fact, he looked a lot like this "savage He-Man" until he received the sword and harness from the sorceress (who at the time looked like a green Teela). So this He-Man, with the axe, is a direct reference to those very earliest He-Man images.

@@leoismaking Coolest thing, the early comics were made to retool an IP mishap Mattel did. He-Man was initially meant to be a Conan the Barbarian toy, and it got vetoed. They took inspiration from an early book R.E. Howard wrote, Kull of Valusia that was some kind of Conan-prototype featuring a Barbarian turned King, who's scepter was a battle axe, that in the ancient "Age before Atlantis" fought some evil serpent-men and a group of "Skull faced Wizards" who made themselves into Liches (the OG ones, dead powerful wizards who magic their own corpses to return as immortal beings). Funny thing, when in the '90 finally someone got to do a Conan the Barbarian cartoon, they couldn't use the skull faced wizards but they put a lot of Serpentmen that could be "banished back to another dimension" with a "magic sword" and some animated skeletons. Returning to Mattel, they vetoed Conan, vetoed Kull, retooled the already planned toyline to to make use of the concept. In Alfredo Acala's comics He-Man was some kind of "barbarian prince" that lived in a distopian worlds that once was thriving with technology and found a kind Sorceress who gave him the armor, a small tank and a battle axe, relics of the ancient technological past, to help him because He-Man proved kind enough to save her life. The early Sorceress was a some kind of pretty doll in a Serpent-gal dress, referencing the Serpent-men thing, and He-Man found that the evil Skeletor wanted to kidnap Teela (back then, a blonde She-Ra like figure) because he wanted to get married. Also, Skeletor found himself with one half of a "Sword of Power" that would unlock the "Fabolous Secrets" of Castle Greyskull and the Barbarian He-Man found another half casually under his own house. He-Man went to save Tee-La and co*k block Skeletor (who wanted to have a sexy wife, unearth the Secrets of Greyskull and summon other skull-faced guys like him "from another dimension" to rule Eternia) and befriended Man-At-Arms who built him a lot of cool stuff with the technology before the Fall. He-Man was meant to keep his half of the Power Sword safe so no one would reunite the pieces and rule Eternia. Only with the Filmation Cartoon we got Adam Prince of Eternia, Skeletor as the bumbling villain we all know, the Sword of Power as a conduit for the Power of Greyskull and stuff. Also, She-Ra added to the lore that the Sword of Power (and its female counterpart, the Sword of Protection) have to be voice activated. Hordak casually put She-Ra out of commission for days, without even realizing that, when he ordered the Shadow Weaver to cast a spell on several Eterian rebels, including Adora, to make them go mute and a speechless Adora couldn't get the Sword to work until she undid the spell.

Well She-Ra's sword is a Copy of the Power Sword, It's Power comes from the Gem imbedded in it. When the Gem got Broken once she couldn't transform until she got it fixed.

Adam just needs a conduit to control the power he calls down. One of the plans for the 200x show was that Skeletor stole the Powersword so Man-at-Arms had to build Adam a new one hense the Mechanical design of It in that show. This was dropped for the show but kept for Classics where King He-Man still uses the Mechanical Sword while his son uses the recovered original.

The "spark" is a carry over from the 2012-2014 DC MOTU/Eternity War run, where a child Adam was able to call The Power to slow down time and save his parents. But otherwise "the spark" didn't amount to much when even Orko could use The Sword to empower himself, as he did in a very trippy story featuring multiple art styles (A classic, highly recommended). It's cool Revelations actually gave "the spark" meaning, because otherwise how does it even matter? If Skeletor can use the Power Sword, and Evil-Lyn can use it, than why does it even exist? Savage He-Man apparently.

No. This was a Kevin Smith thing. He-Man was chosen and given the POWER SWORD. The sword it what held the power. Not Adam. Heck, Adam wasn't even a thing when He Man came out. Adam was introduced a tad bit later. Barbarian He Man was who he was before given the sword. That's when green goddess was still a thing, before the ended up making Tela and Green Goddess one in the same.

That amount of Warrior experience and self-belief he has in himself is something you NEVER hear from any fighter who is a protagonist, and it's absolutely empowering to hear! The reason why He-Man is a monster without the sword is that magic is radical, and the sword represents control. The reason why I Adora can compose yourself without the sword is that sometimes women have their emotions in check better than males.
