The main issue is that Ciel CAN'T CHANGE, or else he won't have the soul that Sebastian wants. What Sebastian expects of him can contradict though, so sometimes it seems like Ciel has changed because there are moments of "kindness" that Sebastian apparently supports, but it's when Ciel is cut-throat that he is praised most by the demon that chose his soul to eat for its qualities. From that, we can assume that his character is meant to remain static in some ways.

The only thing Sebastian insists on is Ciel never rethinking his quest for revenge, which is a part of the contract. Anything else he is curious/ambiguous about, because the complexity of human emotion is intriguing to him. For example, during the circus arc: It's *because* humans tend to treat each other with default kindness when their goals don't harm each other's self interest, that the actual harming hurts and is emotionally impactful. And it's the fact that they do it nevertheless that Sebastian is invested in watching. I get the temptation to blame it all on the literal demonic influence in Ciel's life but, often it's him making the choice for his own wishes and reasons, while Sebastian is a bystander that values his master's unpredictability.

Ciel does grow as a character, but I wouldn't say he "grows as a person" in the way you are probably thinking of. It's more that it shows why he acts the way he does, because there is a reason for it. I promise he's not just a spoiled brat. He is also less stuck up in the original source material, and he does treat his servants (excluding Sebastian, there is a reason why he isn't ever nice to Sebastian) with a lot more respect than most people usually did in those times.

Ciel actually grows as a character many times on manga, i think season 1 and 2 don't make his justice. Season 3 is one of the most accurate ways of showing Ciel's personality in anime, even though its more visible in book of murder and book of atlantic, there you can see as well Ciel and Sebastian's dynamic which is something really important. Ciel and Sebastian (for example) only talk to each other when its necessary, Ciel usually keeps an eye on who he is talking to as well, but with Sebastian he has the security that he is being heard, so he doesn't watch Sebastian. Even though season 3 (book of circus) has weird moments as well, its still one of the best seasons there, since you can see Ciel's true personality more deeply and it has a better animation. (spoiler) It must be taken into account as well that Ciel isn't a normal child, Ciel has inflicted himself some psychological burdens that made him be an mentally unstable kid, and when his parents were killed on his birthday he runned directly into them, Ciel was kidnapped and r!ped for many days, more than 40 if i remember well, he was abused by a bunch of adults and so, Ciel's character isn't easy to comprehend at first and he can easily pass as a brat, but he is just... 'afraid', lets call it, of finding happiness again. If we do a more internal investigation we can see Ciel sees himself as bad luck, something or someone who just attracts bad luck and disgrace, Sebastian's interest in Ciel's soul is made on the mere fact Ciel has been able to get over the psychological burdens he inflicted himself and all his traumas alone, in a constant self development and discovering, Ciel is a 13 year old who (as well) tries to be way too occupied by work to forget all his problems. I think you should try to not judge Ciel so easily since you don't know a thing of his past, every character has a reason to be like they are, and Ciel is someone who really is mentally unstable, as he said one time, he used a small string to go on, and so he goes. He is a kid acting as an adult in a world of madness, even with Sebastian by his side, he sometimes has some serious PTSD attacks, he is a character who you need to analise and comprehend better to talk about. Still, i understand you are only watching the anime to make content, and even like that, i am afraid you judge Ciel so quickly and don't even let the anime show you many things about him (some of them have already been hinted on the anime)

To be fair, an Englishman wasn't actually the one to teach an Indian the true meaning of his religion. It's a demon posing as an Englishman. He doesn't belong to any real religion or providence, and it would be a part of him to know EXACTLY what each religion is based upon and what it's rules are to a 'T'. That way he can manipulate around people's beliefs to help his own cause, as well as make it abundantly clear what that person is getting into so the contract can be as binding as possible (hence why he had to make it clear repeatedly to Ciel what he'd be giving up). I mean, we got demon butlers, mortician grim reapers, and angel cult leaders. I really wouldn't be surprised if there was something like a Chupacabra lawyer that could fight against a contract that had flaws in it like not making it clear to their client that they were selling their soul for a poptart or something. Sebastian has to be prepared for anything, man.

The best way I can describe this show is “You need to trust it to do whatever it wants to do.” Where it lacks in plot it very much makes up for in character. Book of Circus will be a great highlight of that as well. It has a point but requires a massive buildup otherwise it makes no sense, and it just needs to be trusted to get there. Even the dud episodes have a bit to unpack in the long run.

It's like an unofficial sequel?) It's also uncanon but it has a 2nd butler and a 2nd spoiled brat and a great plot that has more consistency than anything that is canon!
