Head coverings- why we do what we do

Welcome to Herding little Cows to the glory of God
We're not your typical family, and this isn't the typical KZbin channel. Sara and Mark live on the coast of Maine and have been married for over 20 years and as of this writing (November 2023) we are expecting our 10th child. We believe that children are a blessing from the Lord and that marriage is a gift to be celebrated as well as a relationship to be invested in.
Content on our channel ranges from pregnancy and birth stories to therapy strategies for children with brain injuries. We talk about home education, sing hymns, and share the simple joy of childhood. In a nutshell, we open up our lives and our homes in hopes that our experiences can be a help to others walking through challenges. Sarah, you look very lovely in that top. I am a christian homeschooling mom to 8 . My oldest is grown still 7 at home. We emphasized modesty throughout the childrens upbringing, but I wish I set a better example of modesty for the children, Especially girls . You are a Godly witness to this community. Thank you.

Thank you for the compliment on the shirt. I found it at a thrift store my daughter frequents in Tennessee. We can only go forward from today. There are many things I wish we had started earlier for our family, but I can only start now. God will keep revealing things to us and we can start sharing those truths now. I also remember that my children are going to advance the kingdom of God farther than I can, pushing forward from where I am now. I can look back and regret the past of things I wish I had done. Or I can teach them what I know now and cheer for them as I see them be more faithful from examples (both good and bad) that they have seen.

Thank you so much. I cover and have covered for almost 20 years. We have never required our 6 daughters to cover. Your explanation of why you have your daughters cover has given me some good food for thought. It makes sense to have them cover as part of their training for adulthood just as we have them dressing modestly and so on. I will be bringing this before my husband and see what he thinks. I desire that my daughters would obey Our Lord in this area as well. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on this.

Thank you for sharing your reasons. I am not totally done with the video, I am still watching. If your daughters didn't want to head cover, how would you handle that? ❤ Edit....I meant older daughters. I heard you wouldn't force a small child.

I would say that girl in the house needs to submit to her father’s authority. If the father has chosen that all girls must wear a headcover, then I would say that she needs to follow her father’s instruction. If she wants to bring biblical text to be considered, we would welcome that, but dad is still the final authority. I would relate it to anything else we do in the house. If this is the family standard we will do it. A child would not get out of doing laundry or school just because they didn’t want to. Also seeing mom do it with a joyful attitude. Not “I have to wear this, but I get to wear this”

We attend a church planted by the North American Mission Board and is affiliated with (though not always in agreement with) the Southern Baptist Convention. There’s a missionary family who practice covering but they are only there a few times a year.

There are many “flavors” of Amish and Mennonites. The vast majority of Mennonites do not believe in any kind of works salvation. Most Mennonites would call the head covering a prayer covering because the Bible says that men should have their heads uncovered when they pray and women should have their heads covered when they pray. Most Mennonites would absolutely agree with your description of the purpose and symbol of headship. The only thing the Mennonite church would possibly disagree with is having girls or women cover their heads if they have not chosen to follow Christ and/or been baptized.

Thanks for commenting. Wondering about the prophesying aspect of the text. Do you know if Mennonites generally believe that prophesying still happens and is so, how that is practiced?

@@HerdingLittleCows it depends on your definition of prophesy. If you mean speaking for God, no they would not agree with that. However, if your definition is New Testament prophesy then the Mennonites would believe in that, which would be reading the world aloud or even teaching children in Sunday school (which would be considered part of New Testament prophecy) then for the most part yes. The Mennonite church that I attend does not make the head cover a requirement. The church believes that it needs to be a personal conviction and that that conviction will come eventually through the sanctification process. But as I said there are many different flavors of Mennonites and so some churches may require a head covering. I hope that answers your question.

Where is the scripture about covering during praise

1 Corinthians 11:2-16 discusses headship and covering. It says paying or prophesying, which that term can be understood different ways. We understand it to be when speaking to God in reverent prayer, and when we speak the Word of God to include teaching about the Bible. Again, we’re sharing our views and practices, this is something that each one must study God’s Word and be convinced in their own mind how to understand the text and where appropriate live in humble submission to the Lord. Even if we don’t fully comprehend why, it’s such a simple gesture. I’m enjoying the comments here, thanks for joining the discussion.

Scripture encourages women to cover their heads when they pray. Clearly if you are covering when you pray then their heads were not covered before praying. So if I walk up to a woman and her head is covered than I would assume she is in prayer and not bother her. A woman having ling hair is a sign of her husbands headship over her. I read those scriptures over and over and I see how.people can get mixed up with it but I am sure that there is nothing tellig us to keep our hair covered. Praying without ceasing doesn't mean constantly pray, which we know noone is doing. So let us be honest, we cannot lie to The Father. I am a Torah keeper. Meaning I follow with yhe teaching of Messiah Yeshua. I am learning and keeping the Fathers ways as scripture tells us this is how we Love Him. Not eating unclean, not keeping pagan festivals like christmas and easter and Halloween!! We have inherited many lies from our fathers as the word reminds us! There are no scriptures old or new testament that tells us to break the Torah. Nothing that says to eat pig Etc. People use peters vision on the roof top that we should know was not literal and the vision was about the gentiles this is told. It should be more obvious when Peter says I have never eaten anything unclean! The dream distressed and disturbed him so much!! This was after Yeshuas death and resurrection which is very telling. Everything Messiah taught was to keep the Torah with the right heart and reason. Because you Live your Father in Heaven and you want to keep His ways that are perfect. The heart issue is big and the Love for truth.
