My gerbils love Gerber baby puffs and almonds the best😂also your channel has helped me so much and my gerbils are living the best life possible for them❤️I had two gerbils last year and it turned out that they were opposite sex... Long story short I now have 8 happy, healthy gerbils!

I know it sounds weird, but once every 2 weeks, I gave my gerbils a teaspoon or so of low sugar oatmeal. And on their birthday, a thimble of .... peanut butter. But mostly, they dug treats like fresh fruit or veggies. Btw, I like your normal gerbil diet, and your own treats.

@@elladoll1508 That is so funny but nice. I hope u like lots of them, or find good homes. 10 years ago, we made the same "mistake" with sexes. But the babies were so cute, and we pulled for each of the 4 to make it. 3 did, but we had to get another female gerbil to mother the babies, because the real mom didn't know what to do. We separated the babies, and kept the 2 boys together while the girl lived with her surrogate mom. Sometimes "mistakes" still bring a lotta joy. Thanks for your story!

So cool, hey? I never even thought of feeding my gerbils any flowers. But that's part of a wild gerbil's natural diet. They are kinda desert animals from the plains of Mongolia or China, so they thrive on the grains and even flowers found there.

@finsandwhiskers4 жыл бұрын
I’m definitely trying to!
@jeffryhammel30353 жыл бұрын
It really is hard. Pet stores cater to dogs and cats, and the food for rodents like gerbils or mice is strictly lacking for long term health. Some of the commercial gerbil foods have pink and green stuff in them... like gerbils care about the color of their food! My advice is that even though it's more difficult, follow the advice on this site. Your gerbils will be happier and more energetic, just like the wild gerbils in Mongolia or China. Good luck!
@jeffryhammel30353 жыл бұрын
This site is really cool - it thinks of the animals long term health, even if it takes more time. I can't wait to get 3 or 4 new gerbils. Mine passed away a few years back. But I'll follow a lot of this site's advive.

I want to get three should I get males or females. And would an Ikea Detolf work as a good enclosure for them. I think they are equivalent to a 90 gallon tank or around that. And do you know of any ethical breeder I could get them from.
@finsandwhiskers4 жыл бұрын
A detolf would be perfect, the gender is up to you, and try searching online for breeders in your area!

Get males, females are much more territorial and can only be kept in pairs.

Lol, maybe because they eat healthier than gerbils who only get the store mixes. The gerbils just stay in shape better with this kind of more natural diet. And health means everything!

I know gerbils need open area on top and plenty of bedding. But should I do more bedding than open area? I can try and block off an area but I’m not sure how that will go.
@finsandwhiskers4 жыл бұрын
More bedding is the #1 priority, plus if that area only has bedding, it counts as free floor space

I have a question, my gerbil (I had three but one died and my two others declared) has been chewing the mesh from the cage and escaping, and we are going to give away that gerbil because we don't have the money and space, also, we're moving soon so they already are going to be given away, but, I might sound like I'm a bad owner, it's because I'm more experience with hamsters then gerbils, and we want them to have something I can't give them
@finsandwhiskers4 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand, what’s your question
@negan14454 жыл бұрын
Gerbils shouldn't live in cages, they need a tank (20g minimum for a pair, but 40g is recommend) with at least 8in of bedding (more is better), if they are living in a cage or a small tank then declining is more likely to happen. When they declined was blood drown? If not then with the right setup it might be possible to reintroduced them by doing a split tank method. If blood was drown then reintroducing them is unlikely to work and both gerbils will need a new tank mate as they are social animals and shouldn't live alone. It's up to you if you keep them or re-home them but either way both shouldn't live there lives alone. If you need advice then i highly recommended this group. Mark has spent a lot of time making different units on information and is very knowledgeable on gerbils and i recommended reading through them. m.facebook.com/groups/40820477093/?ref=group_browse

Yes :) just make sure you don’t pick them in area with pesticides or open fields where dogs likely pee 😅

Okay. I commented 2 times before so last question I think... Could you please do a video on what to do in an emergency, like evacuation and, if you have time to pack for a hurricane let's say what should we bring. I don't see much videos on gerbils, and definitely don't see much videos on this subject. I get it it may be a touchy sensitive topic but it's important one, especially where I live we get quite a bit of hurricanes. That wasn't a question sorry.. But you don't have to. I just would really appreciate it a lot. :)

We once had a 3 and a half year old gerbil who broke her leg. The vet said it was too late to do anything, but that gerbil lived another 4 months... even "hopped" on her wheel. They're such resilient animals, but I'm glad you got yours treated.

@@averywaltz9681 Then why get one? Its your responsibility to do research and, if they couldn't be provided with vet care then wasn't the right time. Waiting untill you get the money or have saved up enough would have been ideal. I'm sad. But, it's not entirely your fault, it couldn't be help if they didn't want to pay.
