Thank you for providing such useful and up to date information on osteoporosis. I have been on bioidentical HRT for 17 years and didn’t realize that “adequate” levels for a post menopausal women doesn’t mean adequate for bone building. I now have a T score of -5 and feel like I’ve wasted all these years. That being said, I can’t find anyone where I live (Ontario, Canada) who is forward thinking about estrogen, never mind prescribing an appropriate dose to a 68 year old. I won’t take the pharmaceuticals so that leaves me with exercise, diet and supplements. Frustrating.

63yo having problems finding anyone in Eastern Ontario with an interest let alone competency in this region-and I’m near a teaching hospital and work in health care data research myself. Frustrating as heck. Found a lovely naturopath but doses prescribed were completely insufficient to have any efficacy and was prescribed estriol not estradiol. GP refuses to deal with anything hormonal; 3 year wait for gynaecologist who has 4 hours maximum training in menopausal treatment, if that. Really, hormones should be dealt with by an endocrinologist, yet there is no one here with specialty training and it will be a year waiting for that as well. In the meantime, I am averaging 2-3 hours of sleep per night and my osteopenia is probably worsening even with focused exercise. I could cry for all of us. 51% of the population spends at least 1/3 of their lives in menopause yet is virtually ignored, certainly underserved by health care in all guises. I thank Dr Doug and others for spreading some information and direction where so needed!

@@jenniferhutson8579 I touched base with my naturopath today and he said they are now increasing the dosages of estradiol that they will prescribe because of the evidence based benefits of higher dosing. I was getting Biest 80/20 which gave me 0.5mg of estradiol and now I’ll be receiving Biest 20/80 twice a day which will give me 2.5mg of estradiol. He will go up to 5mg per day but we’re starting with 2.5. Fairly good doses according to Dr. Doug. Maybe check with your naturopath again or find a new one. Good luck😊

Very useful information. I’m praying that my next set of labs will show an improvement in my hormone levels. My non-insurance doctor added testosterone and DHEA to what my insurance doctor prescribed: estradiol and progesterone. OT: None of my insurance doctors would authorize hormone level bloodwork so, I had to pay a doctor out-of-pocket to get the testing done. Fortunately, the lab costs were covered by insurance.

I've had the same experience. I had to pay quite a bit out of pocket to have an endocrinologist run labs for estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. Fortunately, my insurance did cover the tests bc she knew how to write it up, and she's a specialist. However, she did not believe in hormone therapy, so the search is on for an informed provider. I am 66yrs post menopausal, and recently diagnosed w osteoporosis.

How about eliminating the hormone disrupting chemicals that women love like personal care products, hair products and dyes, and processed food?

Love your videos. When you were talking about disired testosterone ranges in men you mentioned 300 to 400 not being high enought and that range should be in the double digits. I am not clear as to what you mean by double digits. Please clarify. Thank you!

71 year old who was put on BIEST about 10 years ago. I am very surprised to hear the one component (estrone?) doesn’t protect bones because after I broke my femur 4 years ago had a long overdue DEXA - no change in 7 years. Stayed -1.9. With fibro and chronic fatigue seems it had to be the BIEST that protected my bones. When I finally asked for a blood draw after 7 years (had a problem getting that) estrogen was 550,so maybe there was enough of the estradiol in there that protected them. ( as I understood it BIEST is a combo of the two.).

@@Dr_DougLucas you’re welcome just wish I knew exactly the reason it protected my bones,if indeed it did, but given my lifestyle seems it had to be. I should ask the compounding pharmacy exactly what the combo was, unless that is set. Am now on patch - thanks to your video had my doc up dose from 2.5 to 5 as 2.5 only got estrogen to 47 and thought should be a bit higher for bone protection. But not 550. :-)
