Not to be nit picky but I believe insulin was not invented but discovered in like 1920 at the University of Toronto. The genetically engineered insulin we use today came about in the late 20th century. I've been Ti since 1970. Insulin then came from pork and beef at that time.

Another great video Michelle. On your exercise and overnight sugars, I think you have nailed it. As a Type 1 for 43 years and now using the T:Slim X2 and Dexcom CGM, I am getting great Time in Range results. But even now when doing something out of my usual routine, e.g. strenuous exercise, there are always some "guestimates". That's just the way it is.
@MichelleLord4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm pretty happy with my overnight BGs. It took a long time to get to this point! I'm so happy to hear you are getting good results with your Dexcom/t:slim combo, but you are totally right about going outside of routine - there is still so much guessing involved!

Hey Michelle! Longtime subscriber of your channel and I just wanted to thank you for being so transparent about T1D! 🙂 Having just gotten onboard the tslim/Dexcom combo after 15 yrs being T1 (your videos made the choice so much easier), I was wondering what texts/resources helped you become more independent in looking for trends and making adjustments? Been trying to makeup for lost time by reading "Pumping Insulin" and "Sugar Surfing", but how did you personally built up that confidence? I'm in my early twenties now and personally was never taught about these tips that now seem obvious in hindsight (pre-bolusing, different factors causing temp insulin resistance, different GI foods). Not sure if you have shared similar frustrations as you entered adulthood, but was wondering if you had any tips. Thanks in advance and happy to hear that your levels are back on track! Your videos are one of the highlights of my day.
@MichelleLord4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Great question! I was also like this at one point - didn't feel comfortable making my own adjustments and was not aware of all the different tips & tricks! I learned a lot from the diabetes community on Instagram, diabetes blogs, and people here on KZbin. However, you have to be careful with getting info from these sources since one can't trust everything online. Sugar surfing really helped me as well, which you are already reading! Other than that, in my 20's I started to make adjustments with my diabetes team at my appointments, rather than just sit there and have them do everything. I let them know that I was interested in making my adjustments, so they made an effort to involve me in that process :)
@Bibblethebib4 жыл бұрын
@@MichelleLord Thank you for the reply, Michelle! Really appreciate your advice and it's nice knowing that other diabetics diagnosed when they were younger face similar struggles when entering adulthood. You are totally right in that those books can only provide so much of a baseline as do the standard dosage formulas that endo offices use when first determining dosages; really is trial-and-error. I'm currently in the process of switching to an adult endo in my area (much smaller clinic), so hoping that also helps. Anyways, your channel has been such a motivator in recent months and I cannot thank you enough 🥰💗 You're awesome and always keep it real!

Looking at getting the T-Slim pump as I am currently going through all the ADP criteria to get a pump. How does temporary basal work with the T-Slim if you don't give your long acting insulin through your pump? Thanks Michelle I love your channel and am a Type 1 from Ottawa!!!!
@MichelleLord4 жыл бұрын
Hey Lindsey!! Good luck with the ADP process. For an insulin pump, instead of taking long acting insulin, you have a basal rate that gives you small doses of short acting insulin throughout the day. This is like a "background" insulin. The temp basal either decreases or increases your basal rate, depending on what you need :)
@brutalnemo4 жыл бұрын
I understand that the average for non-diabetics is roughly 70-95ish, but do you ever feel low when you wake up around 85, or even go through the day at those levels? I am installing my first pump this week (super stoked), and I already tend to be paranoid when I see my numbers lingering all day around 90. I'm scared that it's going to plummet from there. And with the pump I'm kinda paranoid still about that.

Hi Michael, I'm so sorry to hear about your pancreatic cancer and type 1. I have the apple watch series 4, which syncs with my Dexcom G6. It has been very helpful for monitoring my blood sugars. I wish you all the best with your t:slim setup this week, and I hope it helps you 💙💜

Hi! I love your videos and have been watching them for a few years now! They give me so much inspiration and make me feel less alone living with T1D :) You helped me understand and get to know the Dexcom G6 and the Tandem Pump which I have now been on for a few months and it is awesome! I am so glad you continue to make videos throughout this crazy time! I watched one of your videos and you talked about the scale you have. I have been thinking about getting one to better manage my eating habits along with carb counting. But I cannot remember what video it was!! What is the scale you have and is it useful for you? How often do you actually use it? Do you recommend buying one...? Thanks so so much!!
@MichelleLord4 жыл бұрын
Hi!! Thank you so much for supporting my channel and videos for so long ❤️. Yes I love my scale! It's called the "Perfect Portions" scale. I don't use it every day, but a couple times a week :). There is also an app you can download to look up the food codes, rather than using the book that comes with the scale.

Hey Michelle, just curious what series of apple watch you bought? I just started on the dexcom, and am thinking about getting the watch at some point, also will check out that app, hadn't heard of it. PS whats the best way to carb count whilst baking? - Francie from BC
@MichelleLord4 жыл бұрын
Hey! I believe mine is the series 4 ! When I'm baking, I just measure and write down everything that goes into the recipe. Then while I'm waiting for the item to bake, I will Google the carb counts, add them up, and that's how I get a total carb count for the recipe :)

ughh you have such a stable line ! so I had 7 pieces of pizza today in one period and gave a tiny bit of insulin because I didn't know I was going to eat that much. So I gave 30 grams of carbs, and it was really 280 carbs!! After about one hour it my dexcom said my bloods where 102, I was so shook and felt so proud, but now 4 hours later im 369! OMGG! I knew that I should of extended the bolus. I did end up putting in more carbs after around 2 hours when my blood was 200 and rising. But pizza really messes up your blood sugars! My dexcom graph looks ridiculous lmao. I was just snacking on breadsticks and im 345....ugh bad diabetes day!

Pizza is super tough to bolus for! I hope you have some nice stable BGs ahead 😎

@russellseaton20144 жыл бұрын
@@MichelleLord That answers it! I heard you mention adjusting your basal in the video and wondered why. I thought the T-Slim, like the 670G, was supposed to self adjust the basal to keep you in range. So why would you be adjusting the basal yourself? But with the T-Slim I guess the Control IQ has the self adjusting basal rate but the Basal IQ does not.
